Goodbye, Mr. West.

West-o-vision!

Sad to see Adam West go, but he also lived a long time. And, I'm glad he lived long enough to be vindicated, I think.

By "vindicated" I mean this. It used to be that a guy would star in a show, he'd be typecast and his career would tank, and he would be remembered as joke fodder if he was remembered at all. That was Adam West for a long time. But thanks to the Internet more than anything, old stars today can remain in close contact with the public, establish a rapport with their fans, and become genuinely beloved by the public. George Takei is perhaps the best example of this: from a joke where he'd appear on "Malcolm in the Middle" as a washed-up star desperate for any work at all, to one of our favorite LGBT icons. It really did get better for him, in ways that would have seemed impossible to that boy in an internment camp, or that closeted actor in Hollywood.

Adam West as well. Yes his career did take an unlikely direction where he'd play fictional versions of himself, but beyond that, I think the affection for him turned from ironic to genuine. That maybe didn't make him any richer, but maybe it made the joke years worth it after all. His choices and efforts were at last vindicated.

Batman is similar to Doctor Who, in that a ton of different dudes have played him and they all have to react to the predecessors in some way, either by rejecting the previous portrayal entirely or adopting certain aspects of it. West's Batman has been so thoroughly rejected by later actors that it is the only one that has any sense of originality to it. Keaton's Batman was Keaton, doing Keaton's thing. Val Kilmer and George Clooney were non-entities. Christian Bale was as over the top as Adam West, in the opposite direction, so completely WITHOUT charm or personality and reliant on a silly voice. And Ben Affleck wants so hard to be able to do something interesting with the character, but DC won't let him. Kevin Conroy is the only one that isn't Adam West to show a desire to bring genuine warmth to the character, and that was largely because Bruce Timm was open to the 60s Batman, and even had Adam West on the show.

And that's why Kevin Conroy is the best Batman. He combined West's earnestness with the modern, darker version of the character, but without having his portrayal slide into joyless grimdark sludge like Afflek and Bale did. Conroy and West appeared together in an Animated Series episode (Beware the Grey Ghost) and they play off each other beautifully. There's a ton of mutual respect there.

Adam West lived long enough to see his silly show be loved by four generations of fans. That's more than most people get.

And Val Kilmer was, I think, probably a very good Batman in a very bad movie. Iceman just didn't get a fair shot.
