Business as usual.

I went to a Transcendental Meditation retreat last month, and it's comforting to know that David Lynch has almost totally usurped Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's organization, in a fashion similar to what Tom Cruise did to Scientology, yet bizarrely benevolent. We were forbidden to drink coffee, but due to the largesse of Mr. Lynch, he had donated a quantity of a mysterious coffee substitute called "Raja's Cup", and although it was perfectly clear, it tasted like the finest freshly brewed coffee I've ever had.

I used to know someone through the record store I worked at who went to Mass Art at the same time as Lynch and was friends with his roommate.

They said nobody knew what to make of him because he didn't talk much, stayed in his room, didn't take drugs (in art school!), didn't go to parties and didn't share much of his work with other people.

Point being, I don't think Maharishi's rules were likely much of a stretch for him to follow.

TM is interesting. The culture of the organization would be a cult if they cared whether or not people remained engaged. As it stands, nobody cares at all if new students stay with the program or not. Once they get their mantra and sit through their opening lectures, they're done. The upper echelons, where they have their own town in Iowa and complicated advanced degrees, don't seem connected to the base level, even though at one time the goal was to move students from one into another. Now it's a ghost ship. I do stand by the meditation, it's solid and works on a practical basis.

It's like if Scientology had no real progression from the personality quiz to OT 8. Just OT 8s and then a vast underclass of Dianetics home students, never interacting.

An important followup: he had to get rid of the woody woodpeckers http://io9.gizmodo.com/what-did-five-woody-wood pecker-dolls-do-to-upset-david-1795740818
"..(C)ertain traits started coming out and they became not so nice. They are not in my life anymore."
