What's always so great about SCTV as opposed to all other sketch comedy before or since is the attention to detail. No other comedy group would think to have fleshed out impressions of Joe DiMaggio's sleazy brothers. It wouldn't even be a thought.

Sure, like when they parodied soap operas they got the various little details of soap operas at the time right, like the soft focus profile shots of the cast set to soft music for the intro credits - as opposed to some other sketch shows over the years which would "parody" soaps as if it had been written by people who hand only listened to one episode of a radio-era soap, complete with organ music and "and what of John's love for Marsha?" style narration.

I respect Bob Odenkirk to death, but he often-repeated insistence that sketch comedy doesn't need production value because "when Monty Python was in a room, the walls shook" always irritates me. I know he was coming from the money-wasting SNL productions, where they would build an entire functioning video store for a one-note premise, but I still couldn't disagree more.
If you watch SCTV or Key & Peele, the art direction and detail is what takes it to the next level. Comedy is in the details.
