So I just googled it and I'd forgotten but apparently Alex Jones was in Waking Life, too. Also around the time Scanner Darkly was made, Linklater went on Alex Jones' show to talk about his efforts to spread the Truther movement in Hollywood:

http://911blogger.com/news/2006-07-13/richard-linklater-interv iewed-alex-jones

"Linklater said he had handed out Alex Jones DVD's on set which carried claims that 9/11 was perpetrated by the US government to erect a police state to Bruce Willis, one of the stars of Linklater's upcoming Fast Food Nation."

I've thought Linklater was a pseudointellectual hack for ages (Waking Life is one of th only movies I've seen that actually made me angry) so it's always nice to learn a new awful thing about him.

5 stars!

Louddetective - 2017-05-04

Wow, I had no idea. Five for evil!

Old_Zircon - 2017-05-04

I didn't know about the Truther stuff and I saw waking life in the theater before I knew anything about Alex Jones, and vowed to never see another movie with Linklater's name on it after that, so I had no idea either.

infinite zest - 2017-05-04

Yeah Waking Life was my introduction to Jones, but he was in Slacker first, sorta. The guy with the megaphone shouting out of his car in Slacker was lifted from Jones' real-life megaphonery, as he was already Austin-famous for that. Also unlike Waking Life, Slacker takes a bigger look at conspiracy theories in general. So I guess Linklater just gave the part to Jones himself. I don't remember this scene but I didn't finish this stinker!

also for how weed-cool live-action rotoscoping seemed when I was 18 and seeing Waking Life in the theatres, it's aged almost as bad as cel-shading in video games.

hammsangwich - 2017-05-06

I always hated Dazed and Confused so now I can use this against people I don't like that talk that shitty movie up.

Two Jar Slave - 2017-05-04

Well, I liked this movie.

Old_Zircon - 2017-05-04

I love the book, it's one of my favorites, so I will never see the movie, good or bad.

Two Jar Slave - 2017-05-05

The movie is pretty cool. You should give it a watch; you might appreciate things about it that flew by me, and the book will still be there completely unchanged.

hammsangwich - 2017-05-06

The movie is a pretty spot on adaptation of the book. I think they nailed the suit thing that changed their appearance. Having said that, I thought the book was kinda boring with a really bad ending.

Old_Zircon - 2017-05-06

I don't know, I really dislike this anmation style and most of Linklater's movies don't do a thing for me (at best) so I'm not sold.

Old_Zircon - 2017-05-06

AS for the book being completely unchanged, ever try reading deliverance (which is much better than the movie) without imagining Burt Reynolds (who was completely miscast for the role, which was also changed a lot for the movie in ways that undercut the whole point of it). And I say that as someone who thinks the movie is great. But it still detracts from the book.

Nominal - 2020-07-05

Really bad endings are PKD's signature. You have to think really hard for a story of his that doesn't end with "Someone wanders out into a field and has an existential breakdown / aneurysm".

chumbucket - 2017-05-04

Alex drags away really well. A good dragger.

fedex - 2017-05-04

This guy (L) got the Oscar for Boyhood

infinite zest - 2017-05-04

Yeah Boyhood's the god-damn Shawshank Redemption of Metacritic. somehow no aggregated critic seemed to find anything about it that was less than perfect, despite me and everybody else I know who saw it as a useless gimmick that had already been done better by the BBC like 30 years before. But I like Julie Delpy a ton and highly recommend the Sunset/Sunrise/Midnight trilogy, and Everybody Wants Some is like Dazed and Confused if you like that Dazed and Confused kinda stuff.

Binro the Heretic - 2017-05-04

Shit, I just thought he found a really good voice impersonator and was making fun of Alex Jones since you can make a rotoscope look like anyone you want.

I still like the movie, though. You know, in the same way I can still like "Chinatown" despite Roman Polanski.

Maggot Brain - 2017-05-04

!van

Maggot Brain - 2017-05-04

Wait, this might be only time I get to do this joke.

"My first novel is finally being published! It's an erotic techno-thriller about how the secret to interdenominational travail is gay sex with 3D lube. It's called "Eat My Ass, the Policeman Said." The book is to be published under my pen-name, Philip Gay-Dick."

bac - 2017-05-04

No sir, or madam, you should do that joke everywhere.

blue vein steel - 2017-05-05

Chuck Tingle would like a word with you.

infinite zest - 2017-05-05

And the Philip Gay-Dick Award goes to 'I Have No Balls And All This Cream'

Old_Zircon - 2017-05-06

Maggot Brain, throw in some gay werewolves who work for a government agency and you pretty have the treatment one of my best friends and an ex of mine came up with 3 or 4 years ago for a series of lucrative kindle porn ebooks we were talking about writing together before she had a second kid and moved to San Diego.

Old_Zircon - 2017-05-06

Also, stars for everyone in this thread.
