Even the navigator started out as a steam cleaning mop boy for previous navigators, then worked his way up to flying slug-fetus.

StanleyPain - 2017-01-23

As a fan of the book, I really, really love the production design and art direction on this movie. Prior to this movie, all the artistic depictions of Guild Navigators I had seen made them look like fairies or giant bats or something (see the completely retarded design for them in the Dune TV mini-series), but the gross, surreal, Lovecraftian thing here was pitch perfect to how I imagined them.

blue vein steel - 2017-01-23

Agree. I huge fan of the books, and while the merman look of the mini-series is technically more accurate, i think Lynch (and his fetus Navigators and Ixian S&M retinue) were closer to the spirit of the books.

Kid Fenris - 2017-01-23

I still love how the guy on the left falls over at 3:12.

cognitivedissonance - 2017-01-23

Synchronicity! Watching this right now!

I love this movie, it has received a bum's rap. It is not a perfect movie, but Dune is a problematic property.

SixDigitDebt - 2017-01-23

It's a lot more fun with the YouTube subtitles.

Planet Canada own house and trainees.

I fully appreciate the fact that later on in the movie you can see the guy who is speaking is beginning to mutate from consuming spice. It's little details like that which make me enjoy this movie.

Binro the Heretic - 2017-01-23

Carlo Rambaldi, the man who designed the navigator, also designed E.T.

StanleyPain - 2017-01-24

And developed the head for the xenomorph in Alien, among other things.

Raggamuffin - 2017-01-23

"I didn't say this, I am not here."

good think you made such a discrete entrance then.

Binro the Heretic - 2017-01-23

Well, it's not like he could wear a disguise or at least not a disguise that wouldn't draw more attention than if he went in without one.

"Hey, is that Thomas the Tank Engine going in to see the Emperor?"

"Is the Emperor having a Mardi Gras float delivered."

"Are they wheeling a killer whale in to entertain the Emperor? Why is it all lumpy like that?"

chumbucket - 2017-01-23

Looking back and rewatching such a favorite of mine, I see that Lynch's Dune had so much potential to be the best science fiction film of all time. Things just didn't seem to work in that direction on this. I still like it, I just feel it could have been so much more.

urbanelf - 2017-01-23

My favorite part of this scene - I don't know why - is at 3:25 when the acolyte says "Foo voo gauu wagkhh".

urbanelf - 2017-01-23

Maybe coming in second, I love how the Navigator opens with small talk, like straight out of How to Relate to Normal Humans for Dummies.

scrungus - 2017-01-23

I still say "Many machines on Ix. New machines." about once a month.

namtar - 2017-01-23

I love this movie so much. It's beautiful and beautifully disturbing.

However, I've never been able to sit through any of the extended scenes or extended version. Even if they fill in some of the information that makes the movie make more sense, they just make the movie too clunky for me.

Two Jar Slave - 2017-01-24

I find it so bizarre that human navigators were swapped out for brain fishtanks, and laser pistols were swapped out for sound (name?) weapons. It's like the filmmakers thought the source material was too easy to adapt and wanted a real challenge.

cognitivedissonance - 2017-01-24

The navigators in the first Dune book were "fat". That's pretty much all we know about them. Edric, the lead navigator, appears in Dune Messiah and matches Lynch's description pretty well. So, we can safely assume this particular navigator is Edric.

StanleyPain - 2017-01-24

It's pretty heavily implied that the Navigators were somehow mutated in the books, and were no longer *quite* human, so it's not that much of a stretch.

As for the sound weapons, as I understand it, they came about because it was decided at some point that special effects to do the actual Weirding Way (where it's a martial art) would have looked too goofy and silly at the time (see, for example, the Dune mini-series where it's predictably just sped-up, blurry FX to make people "move fast" and it looks fucking terrible). Personally, I never had that much of an issue with this because the Weirding technique is very heavily based on the voice technique, so inventing weapons that simply allow you to "throw" your voice is honestly way cooler than the book, IMO.

Two Jar Slave - 2017-01-24

Oh, I'm not against either change. (Haven't read Messiah, but that's interesting to know.) It was just funny to finally read the book last year and realize that the source material is actually less crazy than the film. Usually goes the other way, as filmmakers are forced to tame the wild imaginings of the author. Not here!

It's too bad those miniseries exist. As I was reading Dune, I couldn't help think that now's the perfect time for a filthy Game of Thrones style series. Only problem is the clearcut "good guys vs. bad guys," which is not in vogue these days. They'd have to dig up some dirt on Let and Paul, I think.

Also: Matrix-style Weirding King Fu all the way. Along with a Prodigy soundtrack, obviously.

fedex - 2017-01-24

Prodigy?

I was thinking this...

cognitivedissonance - 2017-01-24

Also, there are multiple Edrics, because he's a ghola. The series totally jumps the sharks when it gets to the gholas.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2017-01-24

New theory..
The space guild are actually the ultimate evolution of MRAs, the navigator is the ultimate MGTOW.

Srsly their party is a total sausagefest, wearing dowdy black bin-liners, they obviously do not care about attracting the opposite sex, look how far the navigator has let himself go. They only need their 'new machines' on Ix.
Also the spite with which yer man says 'the witch must leave'

kingarthur - 2017-01-24

The production design all throughout this movie is glorious.

I love how weird it is and how creepily disturbing. It gets under your skin with its dark mystical stuff and that's the way it should be. It's a civilization that has surrendered all technological progress to the spice and folded back in to a feudal system with the Bene Jesserit the remaining link to the ROman Catholic Church and Islam.

Also, maybe they could have pulled off the weirding way with some Hong Kong stunt guys and wire work? Zu: Warriors of the Magic Mountain had come out by the time this was in production if I'm not mistaken, so at least Lucasfilm was aware of the wire work stunts riggings in use in China.

memedumpster - 2017-01-24

The last and best looking example of classic sci fi aesthetics in a movie.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2017-01-24

Giedi Prime is black. That always made me think they had massive air pollution problems. Or that they live on a Matrix planet where the sky was blocked by machines during the Machine Crusades or whatever they were called.

I obsess over this series too much. But I can't bring myself to read the prequels. Seconding the love for the production design, it was the perfect level of weird.

bawbag - 2017-01-24

Super exciting reply Ratshit of Unceasing Stomfront.
Choke on a tailpipe.

bawbag - 2017-01-24

Stom front or stormfront, both are apt in your case.

Bort - 2017-01-24

See, this is where I think there's a line to draw. I've got little use for RoUS personally, between his racism that he tries to hide with "I'm just interested in an exchange of ideas", and his "everyone is Washington is a Captain Planet villain" politics. But I'm not going to follow him and harass him simply because I think he's terrible. If he wants to talk about "Dune", I'm not going to bug him.

I believe in calling people on their shit when they are talking shit, though.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2017-01-24

For the record, I don't think I've ever tried to hide my beliefs. I try to love everyone as my God commands but I see a lot of hate in the universe. I see a lot of division. I see a lot of misery and despair as people point fingers. If I come across as racist, or ever have, let me just say for the sake of everyone, I love people of all ethnicities and backgrounds.

Except the Tleilaxu. People from Tleilaxu are shit and they know it. Fuck them and their gholas. They just ruin whatever planet they go to.

memedumpster - 2017-01-24

As a kid the airbrush art made me think the whole surface was like obsidian or glass. I imagined large plains of nothing but shiny black rock with cities built over cracks and pits for mining molten ore.

Also, bawbag is orcs, and we have all been trolled, marvelously trolled, I approve.

bawbag - 2017-01-24

" But I'm not going to follow him and harass him simply because I think he's terrible."

You do you Bort.

"If I come across as racist, or ever have..."

Only 99% of the time you post (merely two of the hundreds of examples)
http://www.poetv.com/video.php?vid=155108
http://www.poetv.com/video.php?vid=131565

So you hate immigration, you hate muslims except pretend ones that you 'save', hate koreans because you're a fucking moron and hate black people because 'MUH BLM HURT MUH FEE FEES!!11 WAAAAA!'

Seriously, go play with oncoming traffic.

memedumpster - 2017-01-24

Orcs has never seen Dune.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2017-01-24

*blinks at bawbag's post*

But seriously, I picture something more like Darkseid from the DC comic universe. Lots of volcanoes and such.

I will say I do not have a problem with Giedi Prime for being black. It has every right to be a part of the Landsraad. I fully support them!

bawbag - 2017-01-24

No one cares. Top yourself.

Bort - 2017-01-24

"You do you Bort."

I just think it's a worthwhile line because, if we get on one another's cases simply because each of us holds opinions that others find abhorrent, there's no winning that brawl for any of us. People could hound me, for example, because I was in favor of Obama's drone strikes (read: the least bad available option), whereas my opinion of drone critics is generally pretty low.

That said, RoUS certainly volunteered some horseshit and I'm all for calling him on it.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2017-01-24

Make Arrakis Great Again

memedumpster - 2017-01-24

Bort is right, people can change who they are and evolve on situations. I used to find drones abhorrent, and I still question how they are used, but it's not as cut and dry as I once believed it was. Sometimes arguing things out leaves everyone changed.

Which is why antifa are trying to shut down speech, because they know they can't use it to proliferate their hatred and they fear they themselves might lose allies to those who can talk sense. They don't want their enemies to learn to be better, they want to be right in their own stupidity and it doesn't matter who they have to target to do it.

I think Bort is pretty hard core authoritarian, and I think I may not be authoritarian enough sometimes, but he's not violently insane and I don't want some 20-something with the mind of a child to target his family with violence because I disagree with him. We're both Americans.

Europeans have a shocking lack of community, they are very Randian.

Bort - 2017-01-24

"I think Bort is pretty hard core authoritarian"

When BernieBros say that sort of thing to me I just laugh. In your cause I'm mostly curious why you say that. I'm guessing it's because I am willing to tolerate a certain amount of government malfeasance, but I tolerate it primarily because I focus on best available politicians rather than nonexistent ideal politicians operating in a nonexistent environment that allows perfect solutions.

Just guessing and posting my pre-buttal.
