One time a massive nerd stayed in my house and he had this show on dvd. I watched it all. I actually snuck into his room while he was asleep and quietly took the final dvd to watch. (He encouraged me to watch them, I just didnt want to disturb him)
My impression was that its mainly total shite. The plot is complete nonsense. A lot of it is really boring and kinda.. creepy, in a bad way.
But still I watched it all.. The main reason I watched it I think is that while it is mostly boring and stupid, every now and again the art is phenomenal. Some rare seconds of animation are amazing. The art-design is pretty great. Also the backdrops are crazy. Eg 2 people are having a boring/gibberish/infantile discussion on an escalator.. But judging by the backdrops the escalator seems to be several miles long, cutting through this mind-buggeringly vast space with these enormous hulking amorphous figures in the background.
This art definitely works with the weird/epic general tone, mix of wacky sci-fi + random religious references.

A much larger proportion of the the really great anime seems to be way more 'out there' and arty than western stuff ('Mind game' is a good example). Very not safe bet stuff, I love it, its really fresshhhh.
Theres only a tiny percent out of *all* films and tv that are great, and some of them happen to be anime.

In the original script, I shit you not, Shinji was supposed to wake up next to a severed arm and eyeball. Also, in another re-write Shinji was supposed to be awaken by Ausuka punching him and yelling at him for killing everybody on Earth.
It's kind of hard for me to gauge this show due to sentimental value and due to how many other shows have aped NGE's slower pacing. All I can really say is that as good as show could be is as bad as it was at it's worst.
Also Rebuild is schlecht. don't watch Rebuild.

Maggot Brain - 2016-11-29 The who point of rebuild was to make Eva more "accessible." They're not going to do a mind fuck ending.
I will say that 3.0 was better; Kaworu getting more fleshed out as a character and the fight in "LILITH'S SKULL PIT" was fun but we didn't need the two other moves retreading old ground with adding nothing new.

SolRo - 2016-11-29 I think/hope it's setting up for a mind fuck ending. There are several hints setting Rebuild up to be a literal rebuild of the world after the events of NGE (not a reboot but a sequel) and the fact that Anno is taking so fucking long to finish it up makes me think he's wrestling with the writing to make it maximum mind fuck.
