Key point:

We can't criticize China and Russia because they have modeled their security apparatus after ours. Seriously? There is absolutely no comparison between the NSA and the way these security states control their people or the power that is invested in their intelligence communities. The worst thing we have ever done in terms of spying on ourselves doesn't even compare to the blatant reading/recording of e-mails and screening of telephone conversations and arresting of gay activistsi and people who have simply objected to policy decisions.

How could he fucking say that?!

But yeah PGP is great.

SolRo - 2016-11-27

You're a naive idiot with an extremely jingoistic world view

That guy - 2016-11-27

LolRo

Well, to respond to that Mr Baleen, here are a few questions for you:

1) Out of China, Russia, and the United States, which country has the largest military presence on foreign soil?
2) How many foreign nations has China bombed in the last eight years? How many has Russia? How many has the United States?
3) What are the respective prison populations of China, Russia, and the United States? Which of these great powers throws more of its citizens, per capita, into jail cells?
4) For the sake of argument, assume that we (Snowden's audience) all live together in the United States. Given that we are living in the United States, which of the following areas might we have some real measure of control over (and thus, should be focusing our energy on): China, Russia, or the United States?

I think that it's a fair point that Snowden happened to seek refuge in countries that by any reasonable measure less free than the one he left. He was considering Venezuela for a while there, if I remember correctly, and that's hardly a democratic utopia. Of course, he had to go someplace, but I think I wouldn't mind his line of argument if he just up and admitted that his actions forced him to seek asylum from the United States's strategic competitors.

Snowden know more than most that the U.S. was hardly as uninterested in its citizens' lives as it seemed, but one would think that he'd be aware of his propaganda value to people utterly uninterested in his ideals. The USSR never tired of pointing out the racial inequalities of the American South. They might not have been wrong, either. But they were still an enormously repressive police state that murdered millions. There are, I think, questions of degree here.

Fuck this guy and fuck his supporters.

Well, now you got your boy elected, you did your paid hit for the Russians you spineless fucking coward. Wonder if he'll the share the money he's getting for it with all the Guy Fawkes-mask wearing, armchair "revolutionary" pussies out there who let themselves get conned in such a spectacularly retarded way.

namtar - 2016-11-27

Yeah, fuck the guy that revealed how the government under both republican and democrat administrations has been spying on its own citizens.

Let's hope none of us is deemed a potential threat to the NSA, because they'll look at our online sexual history to silence us.

Miss Henson's 6th grade class - 2016-11-28

Snowden might kinda be a hero for exposing the NSA (assuming that he didn't just take his oath to break it and can accurately be called a whistleblower). But he didn't get any sympathy from me for spilling the beans on how we spy on other countries (they know we do, and that's why we have a spy service). I'd also like to know what, exactly, he gave up to Putin in terms of information in exchange for asylum, beyond mere propaganda value. I'm betting it wasn't "nothing."

EvilHomer - 2016-11-27

The poesters who disagree with Snowden are five-starring this, the poesters who agree with Snowden are one-starring him, Hillary's bizarre conspiracy theory ("Russian infiltrators are everywhere!") is still alive and being fed by the very same social group (the "left") which, historically, was openly skeptical of anti-Russian fear-mongering. We've got my pal SolRo, who hates Trump and loves Hillary, defending Snowden, who hates Hillary and prefers Trump. Most of all, we have now come past the point where Snowden, a whistleblower who dropped the dirt on the American government's Orwellian surveillance grid, is considered an enemy of the people - not because there is a strong case to be made that Snowden was _allowed_ to leak his information by the very security agencies he was supposedly blowing the whistle on, but rather, because the dying, lying neoliberal media, still reeling from the fatal blows it took thanks to Assange et al., is casting Mr Snowden as a counter-revolutionary spy who works for Eurasia.

Fuck me, I love 2016 so far. This current season has been great!

simon666 - 2016-11-27

Your thinking isn't very organized and thus it is hard to follow what point you're trying to make. Try something like this:

1. Premise.
2. Premise.
3. Premise
4. By 1-3, conclusion.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-11-27

Sad to say, it's not EvilHomer's fault: society itself has become unhinged and logical connections no longer seem to matter... if indeed they ever did. He's just being descriptive.

For example, did I miss something, where Ed has a raging hate boner for Hillary Clinton? Many seem to think so, but from my own experience, Jullian Assange hates Hillary Clinton and has acted in concert with Russia to undermine her candidacy. Not Ed Snowden. He's hiding in Russia, and has had little influence on political events today. How has Ed Snowden done anything to undermine the Clintons? But most people here ( including EvilHomer apparently ) seem to believe this conflation.

Help me out here...

Spit Spingola - 2016-11-27

I don't know if Snowden's really taken a position on Trump but on Twitter Trump repeatedly said Edward Snowden should be executed.

>>I don't know if Snowden's really taken a position on Trump but on Twitter Trump repeatedly said Edward Snowden should be executed.

I laughed really hard at this. 2016 goes hard.

Miss Henson's 6th grade class - 2016-11-28

You seem to be really, really selective about what you consider "credible" and "not credible" and this seems to differ pretty substantially from most sources people consider halfway reputable. "Halfway reputable" sources aren't always right, of course, but they usually provide a pretty decent ground for discussion. Of course, once you've more-or-less defined your premises the way you'd like them, you can reach whatever conclusions you'd like. Must be fun.

chumbucket - 2016-11-28

Great dude, you blew a big giant whistle on espionage. Sadly that doesn't make you an instant expert about world politics.
