Oh this movie. I think they overestimated its mainstream potential in a pre-Matrix "Everything is an illusion" world of digital apathy. I worked at a video rental store some 5 years after this came out and we were still trying to get rid of copies. 5 stars for a "video game" movie that's a little more Stephensen and a little less.. Idunno they guy who created Mortal Kombat.

This movie is pretty good for a movie and mediocre at best for a Cronenberg movie.

bawbag - 2016-11-22

^This.

It's enjoyable schlock, but definitely among Cronenberg's worst imho.

Also that video/dvd cover really annoyed me back in 99, and it still does now. It looks like a collection of Buffy/Angel/Charmed episodes.

Lurchi - 2016-11-22

nope, it's one of his best

bawbag - 2016-11-22

YMMV.

I think Spider, Naked Lunch, Videodrome, the Fly, Crash, Dead Ringers or even M. Butterfly are superior movies.

Existenz is sort of a Cronenberg theme megamix imho. That's not to say it's bad per se, I'll still take Cronenberg's C reel any day of the week over 99% of the shit that is crapped into the hollywood mainstream.

NewHeavenSockman - 2016-11-22

this movie was pretty good

i don't know how can do do a listing of "better" cronenberg movies and not mention the brood though

bawbag - 2016-11-22

True on 'The brood'.

Dunno what you guys are on about. I honestly can't think of a single "bad" Cronenberg movie, except MAYBE Fast Company which just wasn't very compelling to me personally, though I get why he made it. I think he's made some so-so films, but everything he's done is pretty solid from a film-making perspective. I notice Spider often gets left out discussions about his work which is too bad because I think it was a genuinely overlooked film.
I kinda wish he'd make another horror/sci-fi movie movie before he retires from filmmaking or dies, but I guess we'll see.

blue vein steel - 2016-11-22

Agree. This isn't even the best Cronenberg. I'd have to vote for Videodrome or Crash.

I really like this film. I think its portrayal of virtual reality is more plausible than the matrix. The human nervous system wasnt designed for anything to 'plug in' anywhere and get commands out and sensory information in like a gaming console or something, so I dont know how that would be possible, you couldnt just sever the spinal cord and connect to all the nerves there as a lot of nervous response and information processing happens lower down than that (even in your guts!)

I think existenzs take is more plausible as it seems to work like some sort of drug, working *with* your nervous system to induce a dream-like state where the game elements are more suggested rather than simulated like a conventional computer game.

I always thought this was a really great movie. It was one of the few "mind fuck" kind of movies that, to me, actually worked as opposed to a lot of the stuff coming out in the 90s/early 00s which all had that kind of "OMG THE TWIST IS THAT YOU'RE DEAD! AND YOU'RE HITLER!" kind of tone.
I also love the subtle but often overlooked aspect of the film which is that it has almost no physical technology in it (aside from the game pods) and certainly nothing as cliche' as neuro-net chairs and huge computer touchscreens and shit like that.
This was also one of the things I really liked about Inception. The whole dream-invasion technology was just THERE...it was never really explained or made into some fancy VR machine/holodeck thing or whatever.
