boner - 2016-09-30
elon musk, who makes electric cars and rocket ships, is worshipped by a cult of unsuccessful fart app makers.

|
Old_Zircon - 2016-09-30 You laugh now, but Elon Musk's world view is pretty typical of the Silicon Valley elite and they are the people who are largely determining the course of human society and government over the next century or two.
|
Old_Zircon - 2016-09-30 Ok, I hadn't watched the video so I just assumed I would be cringing at Elon Musk, since that's a safe assumption.

Shortly after, Musk renamed his space program Phage-X, burned down his offices and killed himself.

memedumpster - 2016-09-30
Remember that episode of Lexx where they went to Vietnam to meet the cannibal space pope and they ended up nuking the whole country on the way out?
Elon does.

Stars for the expression in the preview image, where we see dawn breaking over Marblehead.
|
Potrod - 2016-09-30
I can't keep up, why do we hate Musk? His main projects seem to be electric cars, rocket ships, and solar panels.
|
15th - 2016-09-30 I think it is in vogue for arm-chair intellectuals to dismiss pop-scientists and such.
"Woah, you think Chomsky is retarded? Shooot, you must be off the chain smart."

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-09-30 Outside of taking the Lord Tesla's name in vain, I see no reason to dislike the man. He's pretty clear about where the money comes from for all of this ( hint, it ain't him ) so he's not John Galting us.
The scat fetishist did wind up a good question though, why would anyone want to live on Mars? He's planning a cruise ship because the planet itself is destined to be a bit of a let down. It's quite a bit worse than the playa: you're living in a tin can basically.
A sharper Elon would have suggested to the questioner that on Mars, shit will be a very valuable commodity. Anything you can get water _and_ fertilizer from is going to be in hot demand. Colonists will probably end up arguing over who controls the communal supply. Let the Mars Toilet Wars commence!

|
blue vein steel - 2016-09-30 cognitivedissonance has a point about Musk not thinking about the future ramifications and jumping into stuff, but the things he is championing (end of fossil fuel dependence and space exploration on colonization) are ultimately benefits for humanity

Nominal - 2016-09-30 Coming from a relative who's a long time NASA worker - and who WISHES otherwise - colonization and manned deep space flights will never, ever happen. The energy needed just makes it impossible to ever be viable. If technology ever advances enough to create the necessary energy, then we won't need colonization because we'll have magic renewable cheap energy right here on Earth.
It's just a science fiction pipe dream. Sorry, nerds :(
|
cognitivedissonance - 2016-09-30 Well, not merely that, but actual national/political control over any space colony would be absolutely impractical. Any Martian colony would by default be it's own nationality, because no Earth country could actually maintain ties on a level required to do it. If the colony is to be truly self-sufficient, which is the only point in doing this, in short order the colonists would start considering themselves "Martians" and they'd organize themselves under whatever form of government would be practical given the situation, which would likely be a small scale concept of mutual consensus. What would then happen to any Martian child at that point would an unprecedented scenario.
In actuality, the only government that we understand that would hold up on an extraplanetary colony would probably be a theocracy.

Meerkat - 2016-10-01 My opinion is always "First see if you can fix a planet that already mostly works" followed by "colonize the moon first so you can kill your astronauts closer to home and eventually learn how not to kill your astronauts."
|
memedumpster - 2016-10-01 Well, I'm suicidal today, thanks Nominal.
|
Sanest Man Alive - 2016-10-02 Nominal, I don't doubt your NASA relative's expertise in their chosen field, only their understanding of the human condition. We are creatures of Want; satisfaction is our most fleeting pleasure, and Paradise is boring and terribly alien to us. If cheap, effective and renewable energy were to become a reality on earth, ultimately it would only whet our desire to reach up and claim the stars above for our own.

blue vein steel - 2016-09-30
I've read that argument, and the ones about human viability in space, and i was a little overstating it. You're probably right about human colonization in the near future (200-300 years), but asteroid and moon mining may actually happen in the next 50 to 100.

blue vein steel - 2016-09-30 and that was supposed to be a reply to Nominal

dairyqueenlatifah - 2016-09-30
I don't know why, but the fact that space travel went from being an active goal by our world leaders to little more than a billionaire's hobby really bums me out.
