That guy - 2016-09-28

um.... How much do you know about mercury, Cody?

jfcaron_ca - 2016-09-28

He's right that elemental mercury won't absorb through the skin fast enough to pose a hazard. He's totally ignoring the vapours though, but I guess this is outdoors so maybe it's fine. He's right that the mercury nitrate or whatever at the end is the worst part, that stuff absorbs really fast through skin.

Basically, he's not conforming to our usual levels of overcaution, but it's kind of absurd because it's not a huge burden to overprotect yourself from mercury. Like, why not wear gloves *all* the time? What about the one time you fuck up and put your hand in the can of mercury nitrate by accident? Then you're dead.

The worst part imho is that viewers might see him handling mercury without apparent safety precautions and assume that it's totally safe. It's not. The specific things he's doing in this video are relatively safe, but there's a hell of a lot that can go wrong.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-09-28

Kudos for finding the channel, JF. If I had to ding the guy, it would be for taking these kinds of risks for such poor reasons. That said, I am pretty sure he is operating a mine on his property, so I suppose he has some practical reasons for having all that mercury.

BTW, _love_ that opening credit. Very clever.

baleen - 2016-09-30

Isn't this that awesome dude that goes into abandoned mines and grows plants in them and melts silver off of street tar and weird shit like that?
I think he knows his stuff.

Cena_mark - 2016-09-28

Mercury looks like so much fun. It's a cruel joke nature has played by making it toxic.

chumbucket - 2016-09-28

Exactly! It's like the Jarts of the elemental chemistry world.

Old_Zircon - 2016-09-28

In Zappa's autobiography near the time of his death, he talked about playing with mercury all the time as a kid. People still thought it was safe back then, and his dad (a chemist for the army who dealt with chemical weapons) would bring him back jars of it all the time. He would slam wooden blocks down on it so it sprayed all over the room, and then get ground into the carpet and never come out, and that was how he lived for years.

And then he died of cancer at 53.

Mercury!

baleen - 2016-09-30

My dad told me that he went on the Howdy Doody Show when he was little and won some trivia thing (he was a prodigy of sorts) and won a super children's science kit set that came equipped with a chunk of uranium, like bad, will make you sick uranium. Nobody gave a fuck back then.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2016-09-30

baleen, I know about that science kit! The government actually had to step in and ban it after it found out about it, but there was a year or so that the kit was sold with uranium in it. But they did give a fuck, it's just not enough people actually knew how dangerous it was. Which is shocking that a science kit company didn't have the foresight but I'm thinking it was one of those times they employed scientists and the guy in charge was a braindead hick who loved to go out into the Nevada desert to watch the pretty bomb tests like it was the 4th of July and told the smarter employees to STFU. Then a bunch of kids got shiny uranium nuggets.

Grandmaster Funk - 2016-09-28

Besides people who are just really into toilets like Cody here, who's tried to flush a lead bullet? Murderers?

The mercury flush starburst was pretty cool.

Cena_mark - 2016-09-28

A murderer wouldn't likely try flushing a bullet down the toilet. Perhaps a shell, but those are hollow and made of brass, so I'd assume they'd go down easy. Also that bullet is like an old Civil War bullet, and those were huge.

Two Jar Slave - 2016-09-28

T1000 is not enjoying his retirement.

Old_Zircon - 2016-09-28

Ok so he got a new toilet for this, but those plungers are clearly well used and even leave chunks floating around after he plunges the mercury.

HOW DO YOU CLEAN POOP FROM MERCURY?

Is there a Wikihow page for that?

Old_Zircon - 2016-09-28

(there isn't)

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-09-28

Why, you distill it of course. Now we're talking dangerous! But I think he might have a clip about the subject on his channel.

Maggot Brain - 2016-09-28

This guy is definitely getting cancer. Isn't this the same guy who has an abandoned arsenic mine on his property?

jfcaron_ca - 2016-09-28

Yep. He got an old air compressor working so now he's digging it out with a hydraulic hammer & black powder charges. One day the channel will just stop updating and I'll have to find out the details on twitter or something.

Tbh I'm very jealous of his enthusiasm.
