Wow, 90 minutes long, you ain't kidding.

I never really got into the Fallout series, though I like the design style.

William Burns - 2016-09-23

Did you try New Vegas? It is as wonderful as FO3 is stupid. Do not continue to FO4.

bawbag - 2016-09-23

What I played of NV was really good but the constant Bethesda corrupted save file issues fucked me off enough to stop playing entirely after the third time it happened.

IIRC I went back to playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl instead, it was a good call.

Two Jar Slave - 2016-09-23

I've tried to get into STALKER, but I don't know what the entry-point is supposed to be. What do I do here, and why should I care?

I want to like it, though. I mean... it's all we have until Telltale makes an Andrei Rublev adaptation in 2047 after exhausting every other cultural property.

bawbag - 2016-09-23

"What do I do here, and why should I care?"

RP-ing as Anatoli is where you went wrong!

In seriousness though, at the time the game had a fantastic atmosphere of dread throughout -especially on master difficulty-, the semi-realistic gun physics made it a bit more challenging than many other point/shoot FPS mechanics of the time and the lack of noticeable rails was quite refreshing.

The modding community is really what made it something though (Oblivion Lost, LURK etc), and is apparently still fervently polishing the rough edges of the very buggy vanilla release to this day.

All this typing about it has convinced me to fire it up again and check out the current state of mods for it.

Bobonne - 2016-09-23

Bethesda was actually legally contractually obligated to do the QA bugtesting for New Vegas, as per their agreement with Obsidian.

Mysteriously, it didn't...get done.

There are easily installed bugfix mods that pretty much eliminate crashes and save file corruptions, though. It's worth another look, if you've got the time.

bawbag - 2016-09-23

I still have it someplace, I just might do that!

Sanest Man Alive - 2016-09-24

Ooh, I didn't know about Bethsoft messing with Obsidian on the QA too. You got more details? I was well aware of their shittiness regarding payment and New Vegas' Metacritic score, but man, that's just fucking them from both ends.

What the hell is with Bethsoft being that petty to the guys who created their cash cow?

Bobonne - 2017-06-21

I originally saw it elsewhere, but here's a quick googling result:

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/User_blog:Cartman!/Bethesda_are_ to_blame_for_Fallout:_New_Vegas_bugs,_not_Obsidian.

As part of Obsidian's contract with Bethesda, the publisher of NV, quality control and bugfixing was going to be taken care of by the latter, which was supposed to help compensate for the short production schedule by not forcing them to also bugfix at the same time.

Needless to say, Bethesda did a SERIOUSLY pisspoor job, enough that Obsidian got serious heat at release (and years later, as seen in this thread) for the sheer number of bugs and crashes found in the game.

Which also, as you alluded to, gave the game a bad rep and a lower metacritic score...which screwed Obsidian out of their bonus, despite having made one of the most beloved and amazing PC games of all time, as time itself would tell.

It was pretty stunning, really. Todd Howard is really good at telling his sweet little lies.

Quad9Damage - 2016-09-23

Haven't watched this yet. Not sure if I'll have time or inclination. I get a vibe that this guy will try to be Plinkett.

November-December 2009 was when my depression was at the bleakest it has ever been my entire life. I rode 100+ hours of FO3 on my 360 through a rotten holiday season. It was the first open-world RPG I played aside from KOTOR and like two hours of Baulder's Gate, and being able to do whatever I wanted with my armored tank of an avatar really helped me cope.

For that I can't bring myself to hate it. But in retrospect it's not that great of a game.

Bethesda's idea of tying it in with the original games was to vomit a bunch of fanservice everywhere without context. Super Mutants are rampaging Chaotic Evil Orcs, the Brotherhood of Steel are super nice protectors and the Enclave somehow still exists. Story contradictions abound. No one raises livestock or grows crops. People act like the bombs fell yesterday instead of 200 years ago. They're also in Washington, D.C. which should be glass and dust.

Nominal - 2016-09-23

I really liked the opening to this game.

Started getting bored soon after venturing out from Warhead.

Quit when that asshole Three Dog gave me a quest instead of just telling me where my father went.

Fuck Three Dog

EvilHomer - 2016-09-23

Well, there's your problem. Never play Fallout for the quests!

Quests are merely suggestions, as to what to shoot next.

chumbucket - 2016-09-23

"guerps"

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2016-09-23

/barf I might agree with this guy but I cant stand this video. His constant tone of incredulity, repeatedly stating the obvious + complete lack of terseness or focus.
This kind of thing *can* be done well tho.

William Burns - 2016-09-23

Wow, he really likes that word doesn't he?

Scrimmjob - 2016-09-23

This video could have easily been 5 minutes long. I passed out while watching it, and woke up an hour later and he was still at it.

15th - 2016-09-23

Poe-gamer-bois,

Winter is on the way and I can't drink my way through it this time - what are some good PC titles that a pedestrian might not be hip to? I thought Portal 2 and Half-Life were rad.

I'm sure there's a bunch of stuff I don't know about....Any cool, realistic WWI or WWII games? Anything rival Ocarina of Time in the whimsy department? Wassup?

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2016-09-23

Two of the best games I've played in a while..

Infinifactory

NaissanceE

Bobonne - 2016-09-23

New Vegas.

EvilHomer - 2016-09-23

If you like flying WW2 game, IL-2 Sturmovik is old but really good. Borderlands 2 is sort of whimsical in a drunken-teenager kind of way, as is Minecraft.

Also Fallout 3.

EvilHomer - 2016-09-23

Also HoI4. Not sure if you're into autistic grand strategy games, but it's WWII, it's awesome, and it's free to try on pirate torrents.

memedumpster - 2016-09-23

Stock market simulators are crack.

Create two portfolios, one of companies you think epitomize evil, and ones you think are neutral or good, then sit back and watch evil cream them.

bawbag - 2016-09-23

WWI/WWII games:
It's a tad more niche/casual than the other war game suggestions here but World of tanks is free-to-play and decent fun.

Commandos 2 is a classic WWII puzzler that still holds up well, Red Orchestra 2 if you're after more of a simulation type game.
Oh and Arma II has WWI/WWII mods available.

Two Jar Slave - 2016-09-24

Jesus, this guy is asking for fun page-turners and you're all dropping Moby Dick and Paradise Lost up in his business.

Something like Ocarina: I don't play a lot of open-world RPGs, but the Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Witcher series are all crowd-pleasers with epic fantasy storylines, good characters, and rich settings with lots to do. Same with Skyrim, but the focus of that game is more on self-guided exploration and spelunking than a well-developed storyline. Any of those could keep you busy for 40+ hours.

Something in WW2: Can't believe Company of Heroes hasn't been mentioned. It's a real-time strategy game with awesome small-unit tactics, destructible environments, and a real "Band of Brothers" movie aesthetic. It's probably the best game of its kind ever made, so if you have any fondness for real-time strategy it's a must. Sequel is even better, minus the campaign.

Personally, I would highly recommend XCOM2. Small-unit commando tactics to free the world from the tyranny of whimsical aliens. It's got a great character generator, so you can have friends and family join the resistance, pick up a rifle, and die horribly. Outside the squad tactics, there's a sort of strategy board game you play to upgrade your troops and find new missions. For a top-down "chess" game, it's incredibly tense and action-packed. Easily my favourite of the year, not including Murder Dog IV: Trial of the Murder Dog.

EvilHomer - 2016-09-24

You complain about us giving him Moby Dick, and then you give him XCom...?

Company of Heroes really is the best game of its kind. Not sure if 15th enjoys RTS games or if he sticks with first-person / action-adventure stuff, but CoH is at least mandatory demo-playing if you enjoy realtime strategy.

Robin Kestrel - 2016-09-24

I've been playing World of Warships for the past year and I love it. Same folks that run World of Tanks and World of Warplanes.

Two Jar Slave - 2016-09-24

I guess XCOM is still kinda hardcore, but the latest games have emphasized cinematic camera effects, pulpy stories, slick UI, simplified talent trees, and other tricks to bring the game to a wider general audience. It's more hardcore than Batman Arkham Asylum, but no more than the Civilization games.

15th - 2016-09-23

Thanks! I'll check those out.

Lurchi - 2016-09-23

let's be real... Arcanum was not great

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2016-09-23

I love H Bomberguys videos so much, I'm going to take a stab at this, even though I don't much care for video games, except maybe Solitaire.

Spaceman Africa - 2016-09-23

This guy makes some really good points but I can't get over how annoying that 'quiet annoyed' voice he does it.

Waugh - 2016-09-24

talented and disappointing

Gmork - 2016-09-23

Nope.

Waugh - 2016-09-24

it should not take ninety minutes to demonstrate that the dorks at bethesda write like dorks

Waugh - 2016-09-24

what's this thematic obsession with fatherhood linking fallout 3 and 4 about anyway

Sanest Man Alive - 2016-09-24

Gamers are bearded children who still need dad to tell them what to do but also want him to be dead/an asshole so they can feel like rebels when they ignore him.

See also Mass Effect 2, holy fuck what a dadpocalypse that was.

Waugh - 2016-09-25

never was a daddy issue who didn't up and write a shitty computer game
