This was the made-for-TV movie that proved popular enough to launch the series. I didn't get to see this one until I was much older, but I loved the weekly series as a kid. The episode with the Spanish moss monster really creeped me out because I grew up in the South and that stuff is everywhere.

Also in the mid-1970s, in an attempt to capture the same lightning in a bottle, a pilot was created for a prospective new series called "The World Beyond." It borrowed a bit from "The Dead Zone" with a guy who had briefly died on the operating table and was revived after being in the afterlife long enough to develop a psychic connection. He would be haunted by the recently dead who would urge him to help finish some earthly business.

In the pilot movie, a man's spirit urges the psychic to go to a small island in Maine to save the man's sister from a malevolent force. It turns out the man had figured out how to summon a golem out of the mud, but lost control of it. It killed the man and now his sister, who became worried after he fell out of contact and went looking for him, is headed to the island in search of her brother.

It was called "The World Beyond" and it was at least as good as Kolchak. I don't know why it didn't make it to a full series.
