No Man's Sky? More like "No Man's Purchase at Full Price" amirite?

Potrod - 2016-08-11

I guess I don't really know much about this game, why is there a large contingent of people saying it shouldn't be full price? And yet on the other hand it's the most hyped up game in years, which I also don't understand.

I was thinking about picking up Total War: Rome II the other day and was surprised to find that THAT was still despite being 3 years old.

The God of Biscuits - 2016-08-11

Because everybody knows indie games aren't "allowed" to be full price. Because reasons.

Nominal - 2016-08-11

It's yet another survival scavenging game but played from a perspective to sucker in disgruntled former Elite Dangerous fans.

StanleyPain - 2016-08-11

As I understand it, basically the game was hyped by the devs as some kind of procedurally generated Freelancer or something where you could actually get out of your ship and explore planets.
When a copy of the game was leaked, there was a massive outrage that basically the game is literally just "dig for fuel, fly ship until it runs out of fuel, dig for fuel, fly ship until it runs out of fuel, etc. until you get to X point and the game is over."

There is apparently nothing else to the game. It's basically just minecraft extra-lite with some space travel and planetary exploration straight out of proteus.

StanleyPain - 2016-08-11

Oh, I forgot to mention the best part. The devs lied about the universe being shared and there is literally no reason for the online requirement. There's already been at least a few people (including one livestreamer) who knew they were in the same part of the galaxy as other players then couldn't meet each other even when they were precisely in the same place.
The devs claimed that meeting other players is virtually impossible, but that's BS. I've run across other people dozens of times in Elite and that game is the actual real-life size of the galaxy.

"

Yeah pretty much!

Lord_Crocodilicus - 2016-08-12

Avoid Total War Rome II at all costs.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2016-08-11

Epic.

Herr Matthias - 2016-08-11

My favorite part of the No Man's Sky hype is the "18 quintillion planets" or whatever.

Did everybody just suddenly forget how random numbers and combinatorics work?

StanleyPain - 2016-08-11

Well, even putting that aside, the 18 Kajillion planets don't really matter when all of them are based on about 20 templates.

Gmork - 2016-08-12

It's only slightly more diverse than Starbound, another lackluster procedural space explorer.

baleen - 2016-08-12

Starbound has a lot of potential... I think the modding community is going to save it.

Lord_Crocodilicus - 2016-08-12

Spore was more creative and it was just okay.

StanleyPain - 2016-08-12

Starbound officially released as done just the other week and it is light years beyond what was initially put out. Everyone should give it a legit second chance.

EvilHomer - 2016-08-12

After five years waiting for a reskinned version of Terraria, it'd BETTER be light years beyond what was originally put out.

Gmork - 2016-08-13

Starbound is not "light years beyond" what it initially was - I've been playing it since the beginning and it's only marginally improved. The storyline is weak - the only good thing about the new additions quite frankly are the canned, non-desctructible pre-made "story mission" levels. Which are laughably easy, although very pretty.

The problem with starbound, still, is that there isn't anything to _do_ and the endgame content is still just ash and darkness. It's a very sloppy polishing job. The combat system is still laughable, and the crafting changes are just plain silly. There's also very little to craft in terms of weapons and armor - you simply progress from one ore type to another, and the very few "special" weapons you can craft are useless by the time you actually gather the resources to make them - and I started farming early.

If you need mods to save the vanilla content of your game, your game sucks.

Gmork - 2016-08-13

Stanley's comment is rather relevant to Starbound as well - there's a kajillion planets in Starbound, and they're all based on a very limited number of templates. Far fewer than 20.

bawbag - 2016-08-11

Who would have thought such a fun game could generate such a plenitude of butthurt?

StanleyPain - 2016-08-12

One can acknowledge a game is fun while also being intellectually honest about the snake-oil bullshit it was marketed on and how the gaming media just swallowed the most bullshit stories about it wholesale from the devs without even the tiniest bit of critical approach.

Nominal - 2016-08-12

I'm starting to think you're incapable of feeling any joy outside of mocking others.

love - 2016-08-12

I am ENRAGED that all the free blowjobs promised in the promotional fluff pieces on nerd websites were not delivered by this game. I have a GOD GIVEN RIGHT to be given every single thing a media company promises evar! one star.

bawbag - 2016-08-12

"I'm starting to think you're incapable of feeling any joy outside of mocking others."

That sounds an awful lot like projection. Meanwhile I'm playing NMS and enjoying it, what's your point?

Gmork - 2016-08-13

It's a new sort of phenomena - white knighting for game companies that fail to deliver what was promised.

It's the same sort of nonsense you see on steam reviews of awful free-to-play games. "It's free so just accept that it's bad and don't give it any negative feedback!"

bawbag - 2016-08-13

'Othello is just a shit version of Go, it doesn't even have as many pieces or potential moves.

2/10 didn't play, never will and anyone who likes it is a fucking Mattel shill'

TheGrungle - 2016-08-15

i'm afraid you've stockholm syndromed yourself

Tough American Bouncer - 2016-08-12

Star for every type of star system that exists in the game!

memedumpster - 2016-08-12
