"The Drug Deadlier than Heroin"

It's got a lot of company, and a lot of them are legal.

Xenocide - 2016-06-23

Due to a secret clause in Obamacare, all schoolchildren receive free bags of Super Heroin in place of school lunches. Sara Palin warned you people.

Accidie - 2016-06-23

Yeah dude, I did this like, six years ago. Got me really high. It's not really news except now we have more middle class white kids involved with heroin so they just recycle the same story.

Accidie - 2016-06-23

I meant to give this 3 stars.

SolRo - 2016-06-23

It's not a problem unless non-poor white people and/or celebrities are dying from something

SolRo - 2016-06-23

Didn't mean to give it stars

Typical Vice covering a problem only once it starts affecting yuppies and hipsters

Xenocide - 2016-06-23

This stuff is in the news recently because it killed Prince, so suddenly Vice gives a damn.

Nominal - 2016-06-23

Huh? High strength prescription narcotics for rich white people have been getting huge passes forever.

Old_Zircon - 2016-06-23

Heroin's not even that bad a drug really, it's the illegality that makes it so dangerous. I mean, I wouldn't mess with it even if it was legal but the fact is, if you are able to get it in a clean, consistent, controlled form it's unlikely to really do you much harm. There are plenty of functional junkies out there - they're the doctors, lawyers, executives and politicians who have easy access to pharmaceutical grade opiates.

The thing that fucks people up is all of the filler that's put in street heroin, the inflated prices (around 30,000% of what a fair market price would be based on actual cost of production), the cycle of constantly withdrawing, and the unknown purity of any given batch, and the incredibly toxic heroin culture that has grown up around it over the decades. It shouldn't surprise anyone that since legalizing it, Switzerland's rate of overdose fatalities has declined to zero.

I've lost enough friends over the years who would absolutely be alive today if heroin had been legal that this is something I take kind of seriously.

spikestoyiu - 2016-06-23

"It's not really news except now we have more middle class white kids involved with heroin"

So basically... news.

OZ is right on the money.

baleen - 2016-06-23

Yeah what OZ said.
A friend from high-school was a cofounder of the Needle Exchange in Seattle.
That shit has saved thousands of lives.

Shoebox Joe - 2016-06-23

Stars for OZ.

Stars for another perspective to coincide and clarify the Kurzgast video on addiction.

Stars knowing that I'm a giant recluse and with out what meager experiences I get from reading these articles I would still be crawling slowly out of a really short sighted view of drug abstinence.

Spaceman Africa - 2016-06-23

That is SO Calgary

TeenerTot - 2016-06-23

Know what else is deadlier than heroin? Guns.

TeenerTot - 2016-06-23

Yeah, I know it's stupid. I'm just in a foul mood right now.

badideasinaction - 2016-06-23

I know that was more annoyance than anything, but remember, this is Canada, so our numbers are a bit different:

http://www.nationalobserver.com/2015/12/04/news/how-american-g un-deaths-and-gun-laws-compare-canadas
2012 gun deaths in Canada: 172

Compare to 300 drug overdoses in BC in 2015 alone.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/fentanyl-deaths-are-a-canada-wide -disaster-1.3181725

They don't break down for heroin right now because most heroin on the street now is really Fentanyl

PlusDome - 2016-06-23

Know what else is deadlier than guns? Cars.

Nominal - 2016-06-23

You know what has way more functionality beyond sating the irrational fears and fantasies of gun nuts? Enough to offset the associated fatalities?

hint: it has tires!

Shoebox Joe - 2016-06-23

Actually, sating a gun nuts irrationally irrelevant perspective is easily done by sailing the flag of "if we don't have them then bad guys will!"

Referring to guns as dangerous as cars actually offers a very slight and tiny, eeny, meeny chance said gun nut has an open mind. Not enough to feel hopeful about, but offers more than riding the ambiguous seas of socializing and (lack of/meager available) investigation of emotions.

Also, I'm new to Plusdome

spikestoyiu - 2016-06-23

"Referring to guns as dangerous as cars actually offers a very slight and tiny, eeny, meeny chance said gun nut has an open mind."

How so? Because I'm pretty sure it's just a nonsensical talking point.

Shoebox Joe - 2016-06-23

"How so? Because I'm pretty sure it's just a nonsensical talking point."

This phrase comes to mind with it.

They're desperate.

If they didn't want to argue about it, then they would already see the comparison of guns = cars as extremely dumb. There are plenty of personal things that would prevent them from going further, but the desperation of winning an argument has the merit of there actually being someone wrong.

PlusDome - 2016-06-26

im really not into arguing on the internet, so i'm not going to try. I will agree that cars are more useful in our society but that is mainly by design. Cars are much more damaging to people, property and the environment, also by design. People have gotten along fine for most of their existence with out motorized transportation, weapons; not so much.

much in the same way that people can and have made smart guns, that are pretty foolproof, Cars can be made safer and cleaner but there is minimal desire to.

StanleyPain - 2016-06-23

Who fucking cares? I get so tired of all these dumb shit stories. "So and so is THE DEADLIEST DRUG EVER MADE" and of course it's only deadly when you're some fucking drug abuser dumbshit. Like it's some crime against humanity that a pharma company put a strong medication on the market that might kill people if they inhale a fistful of it.

I got so tired of all the slacktivist/hipster bullshit on facebook after Prince died. OMG THESE DRUGS ARE DANGEROUS WHY DO THEY EVEN EXIST! To help people with legit medical conditions, you fucking mongs.

15th - 2016-06-23

"Deadliest" and "most dangerous" may be sensationalism, but there are legitimate reasons these stories are gaining traction.

A large part of this problem is directly linked to the healthcare industry recklessly over-prescribing opiates. I've never seen or read anything about this issue that advocated banning opiate based medication.

>> ".... when you're some fucking drug abuser dumbshit."

I know very bright people that have made poor choices with drugs. A lot of people share your sentiment - it indirectly and detrimentally affects addicts' health and chances at recovery: lack of needle exchanges, lack of methodone clinics, incarceration ect...

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-06-23

Yes, I too am sick of the fear mongering. That said, Purdue Pharmaceuticals did spark a massive wave of heroin addicts in the US due to it's aggressive marketing of a drug known to be highly addictive. If that's not a crime against humanity, I don't know what is.

But the deal with fentanyl is that it is a lot more dangerous than heroin as the title claims, simply because it is a lot more potent. Consider the active dose is measured in 100's of micrograms, on par with LSD in potency. Watch the first 15 minutes of the clip. What the hell is all that shit they insufflating? A tiny bit of fentanyl and a huge amount of cut ( in this case mostly silica from the crushed pills ). Now imagine you are doing this yourself as a bathtub chemist. You've got to mix the fentanyl in to the cut so it is entirely homogeneous, otherwise someone is gonna get a big chunk of the stuff and drop dead. Not rocket science, but considering who usually does this, plenty of room for deadly errors.

Shoebox Joe - 2016-06-23

Did you just downplay the concerns surrounding addiction as simply matter of choice and personal will?

Please don't rail against slacktivism when you're being just as dumb.

Shoebox Joe - 2016-06-23

That was for StanleyPain btw

Architeuthis Tux - 2016-06-23

Amen, Stanley!

As a clean white dude, I've gotten opiates without asking for them on both occasions when I might have needed serious pain relief. (Tooth extraction and serious musculoskeletal trauma).

Meanwhile, a friend who's been suffering from a debilitating migraine for weeks had to shop out of system for a doctor that'd give her anything that could touch the pain (plus the first doctor gave her meds she told them did not work for her, and lo, they did not work). She tried to commit suicide after realizing her options were between going completely broke and getting actual pain relief.

The terrible irony is that I don't even particularly like the high from the opiates I got (oxycodone and hydrocodone). One dose is enough to bind up my works like a newbie on shibari night at the BDSM club. Plus, I'm extraordinarily tolerant of pain and didn't really feel like the drugs were worth taking.

chumbucket - 2016-06-23

Oh Vice, please.

memedumpster - 2016-06-23

Gotta' love a drug that sounds like the name of the hillbilly addicted to it!

You guys made the video go away.

Fezren - 2016-06-23
