Never heard of this. Looks great! What happened to it?

simon666 - 2016-05-11

Ran this briefly on my old PowerCenter Pro 180mhz 604e ppc mac clone. If I recall correctly it was doomed because this was at the time that the browser wars were going on and because Be had a built in browser that sucked people didn't like it; also there were no productivity tools. Thus it never caught on beyond enthusiasts and the company folded.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2016-05-11

Ok obvs it was *crushed* by Microsoft and Apple + probably they had crap marketing and came too late to the ball game + were unlucky and whatnot.
Theres a modern open source recreation of it available called Haiku

@Simon was typing my reply simultaneously!

Old_Zircon - 2016-05-11

A friend of mine in high school used it for a while, he swore by it and then didn't.

glasseye - 2016-05-11

I ran it on a 200 MHz Pentium laptop for a while, it was great, but limited.

memedumpster - 2016-05-11

This was the operating system of the briefly used SYNGENOR weapons platform designed to be deployed in the Middle East.

Apple in the 90s kept failing at making their own OS, and eventually had to choose between this thing, and NextStep. They didn't choose this thing.

Old_Zircon - 2016-05-12

I remember at the time it was really promising for audio especially.

glasseye - 2016-05-11

Gaaaah "utilize"

Architeuthis Tux - 2016-05-12

BeOS was really neat.

I worked for the company over three days, demonstrating software at SIGGRAPH. Good folks.

While it did die, there was at least one app for it that lives on to this day. On BeOS, it was called Moho. It was a vector animation tool that let you rig 2d images like you'd rig a 3d object and animate them accordingly. These days it's called Anime Studio.

As for why BeOS failed, as I recall it was mostly because it was originally tied to the floundering PowerPC CPU. They ported pretty fast to Intel (by the time I did demos in '99), but a lot of resources had gone into PPC and the shift killed their user base just as it was beginning to grow. They soldiered on for years, but never really got the traction to go anywhere.

Old_Zircon - 2016-05-12

I definitely pirated the Windows port of moho back in 2000 or so.

Architeuthis Tux - 2016-05-12

Moho was really groundbreaking when it came out, and there's currently a whole swathe of television that wouldn't exist without it.

Old_Zircon - 2016-05-12

All I can say is that I'm glad I didn't stick with it long enough to make and share the horrible, Poe-red meme ridden cartoon idea I downloaded it for in the first place, because my god would it have been shameful. Like, TVTropes bad.

Architeuthis Tux - 2016-05-12

I'm sure we've all had terrible ideas that the world is better off for them having died before getting out of our skulls. I know I have!

Just imagine the horror of the coming future where the barriers to getting things out of our heads is so low that it becomes trivial for people to externalize their thoughts.

In my opinion, that is what's going to lead to our extinction as a species.

Huh. I might've taken that from pep-talk to armageddon a little fast.

The future is here today! Just click on my handle, and look at my comment history. Or better yet, your own, if you can handle it. Sweet baby Jeebus!

memedumpster - 2016-05-12

I'm pretty sure that in Forbidden Planet, the dead civilization killed itself by using thought power to do fan edits of Battlefield Earth.

Like I've been doing for movie night.

Old_Zircon - 2016-05-12

Oscar Wildcat, this isn't me, this is just a character loosely based on my most annoying personality traits.

Old_Zircon - 2016-05-12

meme if you're lying I'm going to be very disappointed.

Not that I wouldn't watch the whole thing again.

Lef - 2016-05-12

They were in the running to replace the old MacOS before Steve Jobs was hired back from NeXT, and Jobs got them to use NeXT as the basis for OSX.

It was fast, and pretty easy to write for, plus massively parallel. I think they eventually sold it to Palm and that ended like so many failures.

Old_Zircon - 2016-05-12

Still kind of around:

Cube - 2016-05-12

Man, this was around the time people were still actually trying to make computers and software better to use, instead of better to spy people with.

That guy - 2016-05-13

I can tell by the name that it stank.
