BeOS was really neat.
I worked for the company over three days, demonstrating software at SIGGRAPH. Good folks.
While it did die, there was at least one app for it that lives on to this day. On BeOS, it was called Moho. It was a vector animation tool that let you rig 2d images like you'd rig a 3d object and animate them accordingly. These days it's called Anime Studio.
As for why BeOS failed, as I recall it was mostly because it was originally tied to the floundering PowerPC CPU. They ported pretty fast to Intel (by the time I did demos in '99), but a lot of resources had gone into PPC and the shift killed their user base just as it was beginning to grow. They soldiered on for years, but never really got the traction to go anywhere.

Just imagine the horror of the coming future where the barriers to getting things out of our heads is so low that it becomes trivial for people to externalize their thoughts.
In my opinion, that is what's going to lead to our extinction as a species.

They were in the running to replace the old MacOS before Steve Jobs was hired back from NeXT, and Jobs got them to use NeXT as the basis for OSX.
It was fast, and pretty easy to write for, plus massively parallel. I think they eventually sold it to Palm and that ended like so many failures.
