Traditional Scottish cuisine seems like it was a long term attempt to drive the English away.

A lot of it was introduced to the Scottish by the Romans (like haggis), the Scots just missed out on the Gallicization of Britain in the same way that other segregated/oppressed populations don't catch on to the newest fads and end up elevating dishes to symbols of national character, i.e. African Americans adoration of collard greens and black eyed peas and such like.
