Jesus.
I really can't tell.
I would say no, but I read that socialist agenda page yesterday.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-04-29

Up to the 3 minute mark, it's pure satire. After that point, the horrible truth becomes apparent.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-04-29

The Millennials are making the Hippies look like philosopher kings. How is that even possible?

memedumpster - 2016-04-29

Hippies were the kids of engineers, the elite of America. These are the kids of middle managers, the elite of America.

This and that socialist thing had one very striking similarity. Neither shows signs of knowing how to design a plan of action that constructs something which lasts. When this video started, I was thinking "they built a backyard fort? Out of lumber? Holy shit! They built something! They built something!"

Of course they didn't.

The basic scientific method of designing and engineering has never been given to them as methodology by an institution or as rules of thumb by a growing up experience.

That puts them back 200,000 years. Oh my god.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-04-29

From the Space Age, to the Myspace Age, in one horrible backwards stumble.

Bootymarch - 2016-04-30

Everybody wants to return to the womb, but we can't, cause then we wouldn't have ipads to get called idiot faggot niggers on. Lets have our safe space out in the woods and get parasites and die. i heard you don't have to shave at all there!

we need better labels.

memedumpster - 2016-04-30

You mean like warning labels on squirrels saying "do not ingest uncooked forest animals?" That might cut down on the parasites.

That guy - 2016-04-30

I can't get far enough in it to figure it out.

Old_Zircon - 2016-04-30

"The basic scientific method of designing and engineering has never been given to them as methodology by an institution or as rules of thumb by a growing up experience.

More like 200.

memedumpster - 2016-04-30

Scientific method : 400 years. Rules of thumb for making things? Older than homo sapiens.

Do you think these kids should sharpen a stone into a knife?

I stand by 200,000 years.

Kid Fenris - 2016-04-30

Whatever, you squares.

If this were 1969, all of you would be listening to Perry Como and dying in Vietnam while the cool kids rolled their draft cards into joints and made out to the Velvet Underground.

Xenocide - 2016-04-30

Okay, so in the midst of this "IN MY DAY, KIDS HAD MORE RESPECT" old people party, Memedumpster kind of fall ass-backwards into an interesting point, in that hippies were generally well-off kids of upper middle class parents. In other words, they were already privileged enough that they could play at being revolutionaries by wearing bad clothes and smoking lots of pot, then after graduation they could give it all up without consequence because they already had a job lined up at daddy's company, putting them well on their way to being the Trump voters they are now.

Comparing millenial activists to hippies misses the point; they actually take far more after the Civil Rights movement, AKA the one 60's social movement that actually fucking accomplished things. There's more of a focus on equality for minority groups, and a big push toward rethinking economic systems, both major traits of the civil rights movement.

The difference boils down to how activism is a central part of millenial culture, as opposed to just the diversion it was in hippie culture. This means they're more likely to actually make some positive change, especially as they grow older and acquire more economic power.

But no, they probably can't make rocks sharper. They also probably can't bring down a mammoth with their pointy spears. How they survive during Cold Times, when Great Orb in Sky give less heat? This dark time for tribe, ook ook.

memedumpster - 2016-04-30

A laser doesn't exist to measure the altitude of that whoosh that just went over your head.

Stay old.

Bort - 2016-04-30

I seem to recall a big chunk of Sanders' support base getting all butthurt over BLM, because they felt that black issues of survival would crowd out the much more important white issues of economic improvement. That's the point at which I developed a nagging suspicion that many in the Sanders movement are not all that different from Teabaggers (the one group thinks the government is trying to take theirs, and the other thinks the government can help them get theirs).

The local OWS chapter didn't impress me much either: no focus, just dissatisfaction and little clear sense whom to be mad at and what to do about it.

Raggamuffin - 2016-05-01

You don't have to choose. Film it like satire so no one can laugh at you, but put up a kickstarter in case people take it seriously.

At least they're getting outdoors.

bias - 2016-04-29

fyi this is about 5 years old

Bootymarch - 2016-04-29

I seriously think we're gonna have to work on these label things. Not every baby boomer is a facist; not every hippie isn't a facist; not every hipster blahtweeblahblah and tommy aint my motherfuckin boy.

The Mothership - 2016-04-29

I call satire. The website is a mishmash of language with no unifying theme other than hermenuetic quasi-new-age empowerment gibberish. There is no methodology, no goal, just a soup.

Also it's 5 years old, so 5 years ago this could have been real and not outdatedly satirical, so.....

I just don't know even more. 5 stars whatever the actual case.

memedumpster - 2016-04-30

"...a mishmash of language with no unifying theme..."

That is how they talk, and before someone sits me down and youngsplains it to me, it was millennials that youngsplained this to me already. It isn't about sentence structure and it isn't about explicit or implicit meaning, it is about every word having an already established cultural meaning-of-thumb (pop-meaning) that does 90% of the communication for you. These meanings change, but whatever they mean, it renders the need for structured communication irrelevant.

"I have been on poeTV an embarrassingly long time" becomes "wolf urine rip chet fat chicks in party hats."

Obviously would not work for technical things.

The Mothership - 2016-04-30

So 'The Mothership is old and doesn't understand cause the kids talk different" is what you're saying?

Old_Zircon - 2016-04-30

"It isn't about sentence structure and it isn't about explicit or implicit meaning, it is about every word having an already established cultural meaning-of-thumb (pop-meaning) that does 90% of the communication for you. "

The word you're looking for is "vernacular."

Millennials didn't invent it.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-04-30

A friend of mine back in the day referred to this as "electric star babble". But yeah, the current babble is definitely influenced by those motivational posters and unique snowflake garbage promulgated by the management set. I think that's what makes it so awful and meaningless. BTW, I've heard a lot of adults in the urban parts of this state prattle on just like this, so it's not just the millennials.

memedumpster - 2016-04-30

Mothership, you're the one who said it. Or, to speak your age, thou sayeft thine owend proklamashuns and didft axe of exegesis of faid condishun.

Besides, I've met plenty of people my own generation who could not speak coherent English and were near perfect illiterate. Middle class white gen x kids were fuckin' duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuumb.

Bootymarch - 2016-04-30

You know it's funny, I hate to out myself as an m-word here but i am and as such have always been completely in touch with the millenial vernacular...until maybe one or two years ago. I really think it started around when drake was blowing up big time and twitter got huge and everything became hashtag this and yolo that, buzzwords everywhere and all the time. HANNAH MONTANA, HANNA MONTANA

I chalked it up to people resonating with the succinct and catchy, nothing new, right? But just the other day i heard a track from some guy named Young Thug and hoooly shit his wtfareyousaying autotuned drawl combined with this self-referential completely esoteric slang really threw me for a loop, i have never felt that out of touch with rap music ever.

Bort - 2016-04-30

You're starting to get old, Bootymarch. Congratulations! The compensations of aging are totally worth it, for the first several decades anyway.

Now turn on your enormous wooden radio and listen to some Guy Lombardo.

Discordia - 2016-04-30

When I was a kid I had the best forts. So good my sister used them to have sex with her boyfriend. I had insulation, wall to wall carpeting and functioning electrical (light switches and outlets.)

The forts in this video are horrible and will never hold up to the elements. Sheets? I could build a better fort out of couch cushions.

Anyway, I'm proud of the fact my dad taught me how to operate a circular saw when I was 8.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-04-30

Bravo, Principia. My brother and I built a fort with a woodstove inside fabricated from a 55 gallon drum. It was used to play poker and drink illicit beer. My brother is not the most exciting guy, but we had some fun. But running 120V service? That's pretty sweet.

Hooker - 2016-04-30

It's amazing and not-at-all surprising how well infantilism and business-speak nonsense go together.

Also, of course it ends with a ukulele.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-04-30

It's difficult if not impossible to have an effective consumer based society without reducing the population to a level of dependent infancy. Otherwise, who would need all these product crutches. Huxley really nailed that, don't you think?

Gypsy_Dildo_Factory - 2016-04-30

Reading the comments first even I still thpught it was a parody and it iwas succeeding ( reminded me of the Kids in the Hall) -- until somewhere after 2 minutes. So I'm confused about whether or not they are cynical, that is merely naive about having no skill and nothing special to contribute to society in lieu of having jobs, and either way they are useless wastes of flesh. (if you cant finish watching, it turns out to be completely for a fundraising attempt to get money to drive around the US for months, hopefully as as a courier and human transport service on the side but thats only my practical insertion. Theyd be cynically targetting some concept of who they might con into pay them, or otherwise they actually believe they have hit upon some kind of creative grassroots dmethod to enlighten people. They show themselves with a fucking 60s VW microbus. Also, look how they got a little sunburned on the cheeks from being outside to make the video.

Bort - 2016-04-30

There's an area where cynicism and naivete meet, where there is a disbelief in the existence of plans to reach a goal. The difference is that one group has decided no plans can work, the other has decided no plans are needed. Sometimes a person can be both at once; without trying to turn this political, I see it a lot in Sanders' supporters ("every politician except Sanders is corrupt, but all we have to do is support Sanders and everything will work out fine").

I much prefer planning, trying to avoid pitfalls where possible and prepare for them where necessary, and using my head for something other than a place to hang my Pringles guy mustache. And if I decide to build a fort, I'll try to do it right, like this guy:

Dear God: you know I don't ask for much, but please, PLEASE let these people visit Pawnee Indiana, encounter Ron Swanson, and post the footage to YouTube. I know Pawnee isn't exactly real, but it's not like these hipster douchebags are either.
