The (extra) sad thing is, though, human civilization wouldn't be able to rebuild itself if we fucked up badly enough that it'd need to do so from virtually any technological level but the one we have now.

Because we used up all the easily obtainable resources already. There wouldn't ever be a another Industrial Revolution. No rediscovery of the internal combustion engine. No easy ores to build the steam engine with. No easy copper to rediscover electricity.
