When we first moved to Florida there was a drive-in that showed a lot of cult and midnight movies. I got to watch this there when I was twelve. It was followed by "Porky's".

The theater ended up closing down a few years after that. Not surprising since the place was only ever about a quarter full, anyway.

All the hip young kids were watching movies at the mall multiplexes. Those are gone now, too.

infinite zest - 2016-02-17

No more mall multiplexes? I've been kinda dreading seeing Deadpool all week because it's only on at mall multiplexes, and probably won't hit the 2nd run theatre (with tickets and beer) for months. Last time I went to mall multiplex was Mad Max, and I nearly had a freakout, though some of that might've been the LSD.

Binro the Heretic - 2016-02-18

The mall cineplexes here are no more. We have a few freestanding mega-multiplexes, all owned by Carmike, all of them ghastly.

But they're the only game in town, so they don't have to put any money into comfort or improvement. I've seen them bring out the previous night's popcorn in big plastic bags and pour it into the popcorn machine rather than waste the few bucks it takes to pop a fresh batch.

As a teenager, I watched this several times on Bravo! after my parents went to bed. It's ridiculous.

Flesh Gordon also used to air every so often in the late 1980s and early 1990 on over-the-air Quebec television on TQS's Saturday night softcore showcase Bleu Nuit.

Even as a teenager, I found it pretty tame, although I don't know if TQS trimmed the film at all for air.

I still have a VHS of this film, recorded off a Space: The Imagination Station airing around 2001-02.

CHUM Television-era Space always carried the promise that it would air similar-minded exploitation films, but Space never got any more explicit than Flesh Gordon despite the film airing at midnight. Drive-In Classics was a little better in its early days, but the only thing I still remember of that station was that it aired I, Madman once.

Saw this in a double feature with The Groove Tube. Smoked a shitload of weed.

To appreciate this, you need to be familiar with the classic 1930s serial with Buster Crabbe. Those early films were not only extremely entertaining, they were the primary source for Star Wars, more than Kurosawa or Joseph Campbell. The famous scrolling text intros from Star Wars are an homage to the second Flash Gordon serial. When I was eight years old, I used to watch Buster Crabbe every Sunday on New York's wonderful independent station, WPIX.

Flesh Gordon does a great job of reimagining the look of those early sci-fi advtures, which used model spaceships and landscapes in a way that was fantastic instead of realistic. Instead of recreating the look, Flesh Gordon builds on it by adding color, and the occasional stop-motion. Your milage may vary, but if you grew up on the original and came really baked, you probably loved this.

I'm going to see it tonight for the first time at Alamo Drafthouse. I'm pretty excited as it seems to have everything I could ever wish for in a film.

Binro the Heretic - 2016-02-17

You're in for a real treat.

infinite zest - 2016-02-17

It's good. We used to have it at midnight on Saturdays for a while before it got replaced by The Room (and RHPS once a month). It's not over-the-top raincoat porn, unlike so many others.

infinite zest - 2016-02-17

It is weird putting it into context though: just 5 years earlier Midnight Cowboy got an X rating for nothing but a buttshot and homosexual themes, whereas Flesh here gets a regular R.

infinite zest - 2016-02-17

(unless you're watching the "uncensored" one; there's really no difference if I recall, just more dialogue).

Steebis - 2016-02-18

Just got home from watching it on the big screen and had a great time. The guy hosting the screening mentioned that the film originally contained both straight and homosexual hardcore scenes. In turn the LA Vice cracked down on the production and confiscated said scenes. What is left is still fun and filthy but the gaps are far from seamless.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-18

I didn't know that, I thought they just did softcore and hardcore cuts for different markets, like Alice in Wonderland, Necromania and I'm sure plenty of others.

Old_Zircon - 2016-02-17

Good movie.

Xenocide - 2016-02-17

*blatantly ignores the disclaimer because I'm A REBEL*

Look everybody! The original Flash Gordan touched a boob!

infinite zest - 2016-02-17

I wonder what the first porn TV/movie parody was? LIke, not a movie with some plotline that's similar on the surface, like an attack from outerspace or whatever, but an actual full-blown parody like this?

Steebis - 2016-02-18

It'd be interesting to see. My mind goes to the Tijuana Bible parodies but I'm not sure any of those made onto film.

memedumpster - 2016-02-18

I've seen this movie once, at the height of my raging alcoholism, and yet I still remember more about it than movies I've seen several times since.

Maggot Brain - 2016-02-18

My parents' first date was to this movie.

Pillager - 2016-02-18

Can we have a 'Candy Samples' Tag?

cognitivedissonance - 2016-02-18

Featuring Professor Hands Jerkoff.

Gmork - 2016-02-19

needs more inflation.
