Anime is great! Well, 0.001% of it is. But that 0.001% is pretty bitchin'.

Im watching 'one punch man' atm. Its pretty good!
I found it cus I wanted to watch a tv show and it came up as the #1 tv show on imbd. Gonna have to assume that that is the result of an organised campaign by rabid fanboyss. 'Still good tho.

SolRo - 2016-02-06

If you look at American TV shows, that bar isn't exactly on mt Everest

Gmork - 2016-02-07

One Punch Man is the dumbest shit ever.

gmol - 2016-02-06

I thought this was going to be about next gen kids getting weirded out by their fathers who keep trying to make them watch ruroni kenshin, cowboy bebop and GITS.

fedex - 2016-02-06

Bebop I can understand.Since we named our corgi Ein, it was just a matter of time until the kid watched the show. All kids and adults should, in fact, be forced to watch at least the Mushroom Samba episode. Ruroni kenshin would be super weird and awkward though

fedex - 2016-02-06

GiTS I can take or leave, it's OK but a little lacking on the emo/romdram front. Battle Angel Alita however WILL be on the menu in the near future.

gmol I actually like your idea more. This idea's no different than the Homerpalooza episode of the Simpsons or what any parental unit does in efforts to connect with a culture they don't understand. But a parent trying to force really quality-but-semi-obscure anime (like Lupin) on their kids who watch crap is like the dad who tries to get his kids into Dylan or the Beatles vs. the Fallout Boys or whatevs.

But yeah, Cowboy Bebop (and a few others) sort of exist outside of any compartmentalization even though they're still "anime." I remember when I first met my future (ex) wife I noticed a big Cowboy Bebop wallscroll in her living room and I was thinking "sweet.." and it just so happened that GitS was showing on the big screen, so that was our first date. She fell asleep and then wanted to leave early. I didn't want to argue or anything but was just curious because she had that wall scroll and everything, and she was just like "yeah I like Cowboy Bebop so I bought a wall scroll." She didn't know a thing about anime otherwise.

(Space Dandy's another good example, but there's at least one episode I can think of where you wouldn't get the reference and meta-joke at all if you DIDN'T have a pretty good knowledge of mainstream anime; it'd be like never ever watching western TV and trying to watch an episode of Family Guy).

..did I just compare Space Dandy to Family Guy? I think I did!

SolRo - 2016-02-06

Would you like me to assist or are you honorable enough to bleed to death after cutting your stomach open?

infinite zest - 2016-02-06

Can I choose both?

SolRo - 2016-02-06

You want me to decapitate you after you're dead? Talk about being thorough

gmol - 2016-02-07

"Please don't wear your Ruroni Kenshin shirt when you drop me off at school today Dad. Please. An no, I am not going to CosplayCon with you this year."

I'd like to know how well some of these aged. Certain elements of GITS won't make sense eventually (why do you have cables coming from the neck?), other parts may never be realized.

I'd bet kids would still enjoy RK. Evangelion too....Cowboy Bebop and Champloo feel pretty timeless....I saw GITS 2 a while ago and it was damn beautiful. Might just be me though.

Meh, I guess as long as the animation is decent, I guess we are past stuff looking actually "dated" (you can pour more money into something, but it own't meaningfully look better).

infinite zest - 2016-02-07

SolRo better safe than sorry..

but 'tis true, that episode (trying not to spoil anything for those who haven't seen it, not even sure if S2 has aired on AS yet) would leave most people confused if they hadn't ever watched any other anime.

infinite zest - 2016-02-07

gmol I got into Evangelion when it first came out so I must've been around 15, but it was frustrating when I spent like 25 bucks on a 2-episode VHS which was nothing but flashbacks and no plot development (and definitely no mechas). But I still liked it, sold them back as used for half the price so it really wasn't that much worse than renting really. But I think I would've liked it more if that wasn't the experience of being a 90s kid when it seemed like nobody else in the world liked it the way you did, and you really had to track it down on your own.

gmol - 2016-02-07

The amount of effort you had to put into to getting stuff in the old days was ridiculous. Adjust for inflation and today makes so much more sense for the consumer. Want to download an episode of something? A few bucks...or just wait until it is up at youtube for free.

SolRo - 2016-02-07

There's not too much timeless anime being produced these days (or maybe there never was), I can't remember that many good shows from watching most not utter garbage shows every season for the last couple years, so the nicely animated classics will always be relevant.

memedumpster - 2016-02-07

If my kids wont watch Trigun, I'm returning them to the supermarket I stole them from.

memedumpster - 2016-02-07

The kids, not Trigun.
