We need better non-lethal takedown methods.

Can't we make robots that can absorb bullets, rush in, snatch away the guns and give the assailants soothing hugs? The pieces are all here, we just need someone to put them together.

Lavoy Finicum may have been an asshole, but did he really have to die? Yeah, he tried to go for his gun, but he's been surrounded by other assholes who had him convinced the Feds would shoot and kill him no matter what, so why not go down fighting?

If he were surrounded by HugBots instead of people fearing for their own lives, he could have pumped them full of lead, no harm done, and when he had exhausted his ammo they could have given him a calming, "There, there. Everything is okay."

Imagine if HugBots had been there during all these horrible stories we hear about mentally unstable people with weapons being riddled with bullets by the cops. A HugBot wouldn't care if you had a knife, stick or gun. HugBots wouldn't worry about being killed.

We have plenty of highly sophisticated machines for killing people, can't we get some HugBots, damn it?

I didn't really think about his mind set, but being a conspriracy theorist really was his downfall. I believe conspiracy theorists are typically bored people who's beliefs put them into an exciting world of intrigue and adventure. If he was thinking the cops would kill him no matter what (cause he's so special, and his radical beliefs and forbidden knowledge put a target on his back) then he felt he couldn't surrender.
Now other conspiracy theorists are saying he was shot while trying to keep his hands up. They think he was shot right in the shoulder holster area, that's why he was trying to reach there.
Can't say anything about hug bots, not even Equestria has that.

I'm not one of these regressives who think that the government should have fire-bombed the militants the minute they took over the building, BUT I think we all knew this would be a self-fulfilling prophecy for these pig-fuckers where they simply would make sure that violence would happen somewhere so they could invoke the horrible violent oppression trope. So...they pretty much dictated being killed and I wouldn't be surprised if the remaining guys went through as much trouble as possible to try to turn it into a fire-fight or something and just make sure it ends like that, even if very clumsily.

Bort - 2016-01-31

Binro, I think I hear you saying that we should use HugBots to try to stop "urban" "thugs" when they victimize "good people". What sort of liberal Politically Correct bullshit is that?

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-01-31

Stan, there is no need to even speculate on that point. Check out this interview with David Fry, and read the associated stories. Incredible, no?

But yeah, the goal is to get killed and show how horrible the government is. It's not a bad idea ( it's been the basis of many a left wing radical action ), but for the fact that once you bring a gun to the fight The Man has all the reason and justification he needs to screw you into the sidewalk and by and large, society will agree on that.

SolRo - 2016-01-31

I have to wonder if, given his experience of the previous weeks, he thought producing a weapon would keep him from getting arrested and turn the situation into a drawn out standoff.

Oscar Wildcat - 2016-01-31

Yes, he specifically mentions this bit of folksy wisdom @ 1:30

"LaVoy once said that you need a weapon to keep the other one sheathed".

Well, perhaps that works if you're at a bar and billy joe bob is drunk and staring down your sisters dress. Not so much against a multitrillion dollar nation state.

Binro the Heretic - 2016-01-31

@Bort,

The kind that tries to prevent people from being killed?

Bort - 2016-02-01

I was explaining the pushback that would apply to a less lethal approach, i.e. it would also be applied to "those people" -- you surely know who I mean -- and that would be unacceptable.

SolRo - 2016-02-01

What he means is go to liveleak and see how his ilk celebrate every time a non-white person is killed.

Miss Henson's 6th grade class - 2016-01-31

A mess of confused ideas and highly questionable grammar, delivered in a tone more appropriate to discussing the local high school basketball team's latest misfortunes.

cognitivedissonance - 2016-01-31

At first I had twinges of concern for the guy. I was touched slightly by an apparent double standard in police brutality... but then I realized he had no reason to be there, doing what he did, armed to the teeth, what did he expect?*

*he did, in fact, expect parades in his honor as a brave American patriot.

Bort - 2016-01-31

Perhaps he will get his 72 drunk Toby Keith fans in heaven.

SolRo - 2016-01-31

Maybe their generator ran out of fuel finally, as the constant posting of videos has stopped for almost 24 hours now.

TeenerTot - 2016-02-01

I might be more sympathetic to "stand your ground" if it was indeed *your* ground you were standing. On. Or whatever.

Scynne - 2016-02-01

It really worries me that everyone here seems so supportive of the government's attempt to steal mineral-rich land from innocent people. The sentiment on POE seemed happy when the one militiaman got shot repeatedly while surrendering. That's messed up, dudes.
