Yeah, this is more impressive than chess since Go is a way more complex game, but still none of these really impressed me that much, even back in the Deep Blue days. Call me when a computer masters haiku.

They seem to imply that they've somehow made it more "intuitive," but I'm willing to bet that this is just better brute force and increased computing capacity.

It's a lot more interesting than that: They used a system of neural nets that learn the game by playing it. After they plugged in some games manually, they taught it to play against itself. And yes, this takes a tremendous amount of computer power, but it's not a brute force approach at all.

OZ I think Watson can write poetry and prose to a certain extent now. It's kind of creepy. Just put in Go skillz and you've got one unfuckable supercomputer.

Doesn't matter to me how they didit, it's still a purely deterministic, closed system that computers are actually MORE suited to than humans are (given enough power and efficient enough use of that power, which is where learning systems come in). It's a technological feat, sure, but it's still comparable to demonstrating that a plotter can draw a more mathematically perfect circle than a human. Of course it can.

To paraphrase Jaron Lanier, "artificial intelligence" is more about humans broadening (downward) our definition of intelligence than it is about machines actually becoming intelligent in any meaningful sense of the word. The Turing test is a great psychological parlor trick but that's it.
