Giga Wing and Mars Matrix were the last two games I ever bought for my Dreamcast (and I think they came out pretty late in the lifespan, after Sega already had basically said they were pulling the plug). They were pretty good shooters, but kinda depressing because of that.

Actually I take it back. the VERY last thing I ever got for the DC was Alien Front which was fucking awesome. Some of the best online gaming times I've ever had next to Phantasy Star Online.

Wow.. I didn't realize that Sega's PSO server was up until 2012, a good decade after the Dreamcast, for the most part, died. I guess it was on other systems too, like Gamecube, but were those compatible with the DC one?

StanleyPain - 2016-01-23

That was the PC version, Blue Burst. the DC version was taken down somewhere around 02-03. The Gamecube and Xbox servers maybe lasted a little bit longer, but PSO was not an official thing except on PC for a long time. There's been private servers for ages (Schthack being the best known, providing servers for the DC, GC, and PC versions for something like 15 years now). They are not compatible with each other, no, unfortunately.
Phantasy Star Universe came out in 06 but they shut that down in 2012.

That's too bad but I'm glad people are keeping it alive. I think I actually still have a beta of PSO somewhere that I did a preview article about. There was no online mode but even the single player was great, and I stopped writing for that place altogether shortly after, because I didn't think there was much of a future in video game journalism and was about to enter college.. for Philosophy.. :/

Yeah..I dug out my Gamecube the other day just so I could pop in PSO for a few minutes. Considering getting back into the single player just for old time's sake.
The private servers are fun since they let you access the online stuff you can't do normally, but the community is pretty small. At the busiest times there's maybe like 50 people online these days. Pretty devoted, though I must admit.

Shooter fans often get mad when someone credit-feeds through their favorite games...and even madder when someone points out that it's bad game design to allow unlimited on-the-spot continues beyond the arcade.

nerd alert incoming:
I never thought much of the genre, (i liked gradius and stuff but wasn't interested) until I saw xoxak on here awhile ago; this idea of playing "for score" in the mille-dix's was just so baffling to me that I had to check it out.

For those not in the know, (and especially for Chocolate Jesus, please read all of this) you gotta, you just gotta to play a shmup like you had one quarter in the arcade. You lose, you have to do it over again, sorry, make save states for training or whatever but a run is a run. This sounds real methodical and frustrating and the score thing seems arbitrary but the good ones make you change your playstyle to obtain said points in a way that just clicks for me. "shit! this parts really hard and i have no bombs but if i can clear it I get an extra life!"

Why not play to survive? Maybe my favorite one is ketsui, (by cave right before they took a dive) where to maximize your score you have to get really close to enemies. what's more thrilling, sitting at the bottom of the screen and moving left to right while your girlfriend looks on unsatisfied or gettin right up in there and and she's like whoa! and then you lose and start another round and she's like what you're playing it again.

....flash foward years and I still haven't cleared a single one on one credit. Got to the final boss in mushi futari but choked, plus that games eh. 5 self-stars for xoxak forever.

Kid Fenris - 2016-01-22

Playing for score is silly unless you're like that Billy Mitchell guy.

Most shooters aren't worth one-crediting, and the best ones are interesting enough that you don't have to force yourself to enjoy them.

infinite zest - 2016-01-23

I play pinball for the high score, which is nearly impossible these days; I consider myself good but there are some true masters living in my town. But there's a buy-in option as well on a lot of the older machines: for half a credit you get one more ball, vs. the 3 you started out with. This can be useful if you're few points away from the replay, which will restart your game with 3 balls when you lose the buy-in ball, but anyone playing buy-in just to get a high score and put in their initials is pretty dumb, since the names pop up separately anyway.

Bootymarch - 2016-01-23

Just keep on playin tee ball

Kid Fenris - 2016-01-24

Just make sure you play tee ball the right way: if you're ever tagged out, you have to start the entire game over again.
