My favourite part is the dismissive and kinda racist comment about "weaves."

theSnake - 2016-01-16

I'm right you're wrong 2 days ago
funny that there's a stock photo of Waffle House with a cop car in front of it.

Waffle House is a great place to get breakfast when you're too hung over to give a shit. Dunno why they never just called it Hash Brown House though, unless they're just married to those leftover self-storage garage signs.

infinite zest - 2016-01-16

Yeah my hangover cure was always Taco John's Potato Oles and sprite, with a shitload of hot sauce. My current cure is that Teriyaki place I mentioned below. I guess I should read up on this a little more, but unless hairnets are required then they did nothing wrong at all. It would be like terminating an employee for twiddling their thumbs when it was slow.

RocketBlender - 2016-01-17

Nothing wrong at all? This is a pretty serious health code violation, and that's just the beginning.

For starters, they were doing a hair treatment, on company time, in plain sight of customers. Even if there's no health code violation, that's still something companies frown upon. No one likes having their staff appear idle, especially to this degree. Now, I know what you're going to say; everybody wastes time at work. And you're right, they do. We all do. Most of us don't end up having it go viral to the point where it becomes a PR issue though. If you're not going to have the kind of common sense not to do that at work, at least have the sense to do it in a bathroom or something instead of the public food prep area, especially with in an age where people love to take video of anything they see.

Secondly, as I mentioned, that is a health code violation. You're treating your hair, which as clean as you may want to believe it is, it isn't, in equipment meant for food in an area meant to prepare food. To most people, that's pretty fucking gross. To the FDA, that's a damn good reason to fire or retrain.

Lastly, and this part kind of sucks, but I understand it, it is a PR thing. Imagine you've got a company. There's a video that's going viral of your employees doing something like this. Comments everywhere range from discussions about how gross it is to how gross Waffle House is. If you quietly reprimand the employee, the footage is still out there, damaging your reputation at many more locations. Is this the kind of thing that happens at Waffle House? That's so gross! Firing those employees is damage control. I couldn't find a clip of this to post that WASN'T a news article about how they got fired, with Waffle House letting you know this was not activity they condone and they're still a safe place to eat nationally. They pretty much had to, it was going to cost them serious business and possibly even FDA fines if they didn't, so they may as well try to save face while they do it.

Chipotle is doing the same thing, really. Is it really necessary to close down every one in the nation at the same time during service hours instead of having a seminar before or after hours? Absolutely not, but it's a good way to broadcast you're doing something to fix the problems you've been having.

infinite zest - 2016-01-17

Yeah I see what you're saying. Especially the PR part: throughout most of college I worked at this little co-op grocery store where the rules were pretty much don't get so drunk that you can't close the store. The store was also a bodega, so most of the money came from coke being sold in the basement. We actually prided ourselves on our expired products that the owners would find around the store and auction them off. A tofurkey and Tab Cola (this is before Tab was re-released) went for quite the penny! The one time I had to fire somebody was when he was doing ketamine in the basement and couldn't make it up the stairs until the next morning. After that I had my deli job and I worked at a theatre where people braided their hair in front of the popcorn machine all the time, but I have a bit of a skewed view as far as these things go.

If they had videos of us back in 200X we all would've been fired and the store would've closed I'm sure. Worst was when my "punk rock" manager got back from the bar during our shift and started spouting racial slurs, like not to me, but directly to customers. I remember he got behind the counter with me and told off a black guy before having to go and puke with the words you'd probably imagine. I just did my best Larry David impression thinking I was about to get my ass kicked but the guy was cool, for reasons I can't fathom. But if any of that was caught on video "punk rock" manager would probably be facing charges.

Anyway that was like 13 years ago, and was sort of why I got out of the service industry, but times they have definitely changed since then.

infinite zest - 2016-01-16

That's bullshit! I was walking by my favorite Teriyaki place and the guy at the counter was cutting his toenails, on the counter. It wouldn't stop me from going there! I did draw the line with a different Teriyaki place where I almost swallowed a brillo pad though. Think of it this way: if you have a pet or housemates and like to cook at home instead of go out, then you're probably going to get some residual toenails in your food. If you go out for every meal, just remember that most people in the service industry ride their bikes in the winter or take the gross bus, often preparing your food when they're sick because they can't get time off or afford to do so. Which one's healthier? Anyway fuck Waffle House whatever it is.

SolRo - 2016-01-16

I think the first sign you're going to a bad Asian restaurant is that it's know as a "Teriyaki" place

infinite zest - 2016-01-16

Oh but it's soooooooooooo good! Especially for vegan weirdos like me. And it's still 4 bucks for a bowl so that's cool rad.

Chocolate Jesus - 2016-01-16

where them bowls, iz?

infinite zest - 2016-01-16

You can find cheap Teriyaki all over the place! I should clarify though; that's Happy hour price; I think normally it's like 6, which is still fair! You don't even have to get a beverage, which a lot of places require. Not gonna say the name of that particular one though; it was a good while ago but nobody's getting in trouble, because seeing stuff like that is offensive or gross to a lot of people.

I guess I'm not really concerned with too much. Like I said the brillo pad was gross, but I still finished my food. And another time I was at a mexican place and found two dead cockroaches in my tacos, so I just ate around them. That place also recycled their uneaten complimentary chips and salsa too. Fuck, the deli I used to work in, I dropped Octopus salad on the ground on my first day and was panicking thinking "there goes a half a day's pay" and the boss man just picked it back up, put it in the olive brine and threw it back in with the rest of the octopus.

But I did have to wear a hairnet there because I have longish hair.. :/

RocketBlender - 2016-01-17

I honestly can't tell if you're serious. I'm relatively relaxed when it comes to restaurants, but eating a meal you found a brillo pad in? Those things some pre-soaped, who knows what chemicals you could have eaten!

infinite zest - 2016-01-17

It wasn't like the brillo was the topping or anything, it was buried somewhere in the middle at the bottom, like the dishwasher forgot to take it out. I was like "ew gross" when I bit on it but I was mostly done already, figuring it was as clean or cleaner than the dish I was eating off of anyway. I just didn't go back there.

Adham Nu'man - 2016-01-18

Toenails ain't vegan.

Chocolate Jesus - 2016-01-22

i'm not going to sue them i'm just trying to eat good like you IZ : (

Nikon - 2016-01-16

I think Waffle House is all right. Sometimes I have to get up really early (0200 or 0300) to start a long road trip and it's nice to be able to stop at 0400 or 0500 for two pecan waffles and coffee.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2016-01-16

I actually like their food but holy shit you never know when it's going to be a pleasant experience or fucking awful.

I went to Waffle House for breakfast at 6am this morning and it was like eating in a fucking warzone.

Cena_mark - 2016-01-16

I love Waffle House. I even made a song about it.
https://soundcloud.com/rumchug/waffle-house-rumble

EvilHomer - 2016-01-16

Yeah, that Waffle House song was the sole reason I upvoted this.

I've never even seen a Waffle House, and am still not sure it's a real place.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2016-01-16

I only looked inside a Waffle House once and I was scared to go inside. So I didn't.

And I'm applying for jobs in the Middle East.

infinite zest - 2016-01-16

Nice one Cena! Hip hop's always something I wanted to try doing myself! I love rhymesayers, anticon, def jux all that shit but whenever I try to write down what's in me noggin it just comes out all wrong or I don't like it anymore.

Cena_mark - 2016-01-16

Waffle House is more than just a chain of diners. What folks out of their range don't realize is that it's a part of southern culture. When you're in highschool, it's where you'd gather after the big game. It's the place you'd go after a night out drinking. It's always there for you. Waffle House rocks, and it's haters suck.

Cena_mark - 2016-01-16

Waffle House is definately better than Portland Teriyaki places.

infinite zest - 2016-01-16

Yeah I've never lived in a place near a Waffle House according to the website, even though they have a lot of them on the east coast, so I'd think I might have seen one when I was living in New Haven. Last time I was at a "House of Anything" it was in Los Feliz at a place called House of Pies. It was cute and right by where I was sleeping, and the guy I was staying with woke me up at 7AM to go to House of Pies! LIke right now! I've never politely pretended to eat a breakfast sandwich like that. It wasn't their fault; I think I had food poisoning from a sushi place down the block the day before, but now I tend to associate "____House or House of_____" with picking apart something that I couldn't eat, getting a to go box and just leaving it next to a homeless person who was sleeping because I had a plane to catch. :(

infinite zest - 2016-01-16

ROUS Middle East? Cool! Incidentally the reason I was in Los Feliz was because I was playing a benefit show for the School of Rock Afghanistan. After the Taliban fell there was a cool little indie rock movement that happened there, and is now being continued. Only a few bands from Afghanistan could make the concert but it was still pretty cool.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2016-01-16

I did not know Afghanistan had rock bands. Good for them!

infinite zest - 2016-01-17

Me neither until we played the show. Here's one of the bands that played with us

Cena Portland Teriyaki places kick all the ass! This one's my absolute favorite but their price has gone up for the tofu bowl since last time I was there.

http://www.dusgrill.com/

There's no bathroom no music no art on the wall or anything. I dunno, I like it that way. But it's also like 3 days worth of food so it's worth it. Once I took my girlfriend at the time on a 70-block walk just to go there, stopping on the way for a few drinks. We got there and ordered and both really had to pee so we just went behind the dumpster. Some guy was taking out the trash and saw us and just waved and smiled, says it happens all the time! And we proceeded to enjoy our food comas. Teriyaki love is something special :)

Cena_mark - 2016-01-17

I've seen all of the west coast I need. I've been to California and Washington.

infinite zest - 2016-01-17

AWW I guess Oregon's about the same. It's dreary this time of year too, I forgot what the sun looks like. Vut I'd still like to grab a drink or two with people who are in the area :)

Cena_mark - 2016-01-17

Certainly if I'm in the area. Alaska was dreary too. I'm used to it.

infinite zest - 2016-01-17

It's dreary and beautiful at the same time. On sunny days when I can see Mt. St. Helens everything's perfect, when I can't see that or the blue hills I just get dreary but not depressed. In my opinion that beats trudging around snow in a Wisconsin winter with nothing much to see except for a big body of water, even on a sunny day

Mister Yuck - 2016-01-16

Waffle Houses vary in quality by a huge margin depending on location. Some places serve shitty fast food out of a box but others actually cook stuff fresh in front of you. The hash browns are consistently good though.

lotsmoreorcs - 2016-01-17

Really no black people tag

dairyqueenlatifah - 2016-01-17

Amen to that. Waffle House remains the only place I've found in Columbus that makes good hashbrowns. Everyone else undercooks or burns them.

Old_Zircon - 2016-01-17

This is some pretty trifling shit for food service.
