spoiler-bombing? really?

infinite zest - 2015-12-29

I love Erik but I wish he wouldn't use "retarded." Lots of people use that word and most of the time it doesn't bother me when it slips out since people mean to say "stupid" or "slow", but it does carry the same connotations as "nigger" and "faggot" or any other form of hate speech, which is ironic in a video directed at hate speech groups.

But anyway Darth Vader comes back to life actually, and smoking Salvia doesn't do shit even in bong form.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2015-12-29

If you're offended by "retarded" then you should be offended by "idiot", "moron", and "imbecile", as they all too are actual medical terms referring to IQ levels like retarded does.

But personally I find being offended by any of them to be pretty retarded.

ashtar. - 2015-12-29

Not so! "Idiot" had a specific meaning and a negative connotation prior to its association with mentally disabled people. Its use goes back to the ancient Greeks. The medical association is largely archaic now. "Retarded," on the other hand, derives its negative connotation and meaning (in the sense relevant here) entirely from its association with the disabled. Before it was adopted as a term for the mentally disabled, it just meant "delayed."

So, calling someone retarded means that you're saying they're like someone with Down's syndrome (or whatever), which is mean to people with Down's syndrome (or whatever). Calling someone an idiot is just calling them a fool.

I've often had to make this argument when dealing with over-eager ableism language police.

infinite zest - 2015-12-29

Yeah. I'm not trying to PC police or anything; in fact I thought it was pretty funny growing up playing the Bassoon, because the German word for the instrument is "Faggot" and all sheet music's still full of "Retard's" literal meaning.

People can continue to say something's retarded or gay until the cow's come home for all I care to say something's stupid, wrong, boring, etc. It's your right, but always remember that before they came for the Jews and the Gays, the Nazis came after the intellectually disabled.

Bus_Aint_Comin - 2015-12-29

i've found great use out of "dipshit", "asshat", or (until quite recently, cutailing use because im a dirty hipster) "fuckboy" (gender neutral use of 'boy').

the r word is simply unnecessary and, much as it pains me to use this word, utterly ableist.

Old_Zircon - 2015-12-30

IZ, you're thinking of "fagott" and "ritard."

infinite zest - 2015-12-30

True, I am, but that doesn't change the literal meaning when translated.

Hazelnut - 2015-12-30

That's pretty rich Mr. Zest, coming from someone who 5-starred a video with the hate word "CRAZY" in the title: http://www.poetv.com/video.php?vid=149273

Shoebox Joe - 2015-12-30

Jesus, the use of the term I.Q. really is a fucking litmus test.

infinite zest - 2015-12-31

How are the two connected? Yeah I liked that clip, even though that show's pretty universally hated on here. It's true that it's a bit racist and such, so sure guilty as charged, but I never said that I had a problem the word, just the context as seen here. A better example would've been some Louis CK video I can't remember from a while back where I called him out on saying "retarded" the same way Maya Angelou called out Dave Chappelle for saying "nigger." When I listened to CK's comedy after that I understood that no words are inherently offensive, especially his rant about peoples' use of the "(insert word here) hyphenated word"

Like I don't really care. I work with people with intellectual disabilities and they still use the acronym "IR" (intellectually retarded) on BSPs, which means the same thing as the word I prefer to use. There's no harm meant, it's just the way that it's always been. It's easy to be careless with words, but "retarded," unlike the others is used way too much and I hate that more than I hate hate speech. The end. :)

ashtar. - 2015-12-29

These stars are for the youtube commenters threatening to unsubscribe because Erik is a SJW.

That guy - 2015-12-29

Priceless.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2015-12-29

I love/loathe how SJW has went from meaning "Insane Tumblrtard who cries about ableism and trigger warnings" to "Anyone who isn't a balls-to-the-walls racist, fascist, mysoginist, anti-semitic, anti-gay, white supremacist."

ashtar. - 2015-12-29

I've head people say that the term originated within the LGBT etc. community as a derisive term for people more interested in internet bullshit, being offended, and drama than actual productive activism. A term for such people would be useful. Now I mostly take "SJW" to mean "I like The Amazing Atheist videos on youtube and my opinion should not be taken seriously."

Nikon - 2015-12-29

SJW still means a crazy tumblrina with problem hair whining about things that don't matter. As far as what ashtar is talking about, that's slacktivism.

That guy - 2015-12-30

But, just specifically here, calling this guy a SJW is most choice.
Let's not leave that out of the discussion.

He almost always chooses good targets, but he goes after those targets with any amount of offensive language, including saying really shitty stuff in character or ironically. He'd fit in well on this site. Everything about his methods would hack off a SJW.

Old_Zircon - 2015-12-30

Ahstar's origin story is how I first heard it (not specific to the LGBT activist community anymore, but still referring to the same phenomenon in progressive activist circles at large). And it is kind of too bad where it has gone, because in its original context it was actually a useful term for the left's version of Tea Party types.

Shoebox Joe - 2015-12-30

I love/loathe how SJW has went from meaning "Insane Tumblrtard who cries about ableism and trigger warnings" to "Anyone who isn't a balls-to-the-walls racist, fascist, mysoginist, anti-semitic, anti-gay, white supremacist."

Ha, you think you're people. Please describe the proper use of the word trigger with out grandstanding like a mother fucker about your cynicism.

As for anyone who thinks SJW actually fell into anything, congrats, you and every one of those schmucks are too busy brow beating than realizing that there is an exposition that's both necessary and a frequent pattern in groups.

Bus_Aint_Comin - 2015-12-29

i had no idea who nicole arbour was and that alone is reason to rate this the full 5

Shoebox Joe - 2015-12-30

The only detraction I have is for the mongoloids donating to the Tennessee Jack web page and leaving comments with out a sense of integrity or tenacity.

PS. DairyQueenLatifah, please leave a comment, you faggot, that can't easily be broken down into "I remember Web 1.0" or some other variant of how you were "with it" you deep, dark tanned, chunky man you

chumbucket - 2015-12-31

I wish I had enough use for Twitter to have moments like his where I'd say aloud "aaaaand tweet!" while raising my finger to drop onto the Enter key.
