BLACK IRIS sounds like a good supervillain name.

Really? That's Jimmy? It's just weird because all I associate that name with is "pasty white dork." It's cool that DC's doing this though. Have they (or any other comic book franchise) done that before? LIke, not the superheroes themselves- Capt. America and Superman have been black, they're just not Clark Kent and Steve Rogers, they just don the suit and identity- but the non-superhero canon like the Olsens, Lanes and Gordons?

Anyway this show looks like something I don't want to watch, but I do think this is interesting.

I'm enjoying the show a lot; they actually do a better Superman in this show than in the comics, and about the only thing we've seen of Superman is a chat window.

The deal with Superman, I maintain, is supposed to be that he has all the power in the world and he has no desire to abuse it, just to make this a better world for everyone. This is not because of his alien psyche or that he was raised in some remote Eastern temple; he's just grown up to be kind and helpful. Seems simple, yet the comics have more trouble with the concept, and so I'm relieved that the "Supergirl" show gets it and is unapologetic about a kind and aspirational heroine.

I like the idea of changing ethnic status of characters in principle, but the execution is not always good. James Olsen works pretty well; making Johnny Storm black while Sue remains white does not. (Make 'em both black so Reed has to kiss a black woman you cowards, either that or don't go halfway on it.) Not fond of the Captain America swap, because it seems more driven by the movies and doesn't make sense in the comics (where there are two other black characters who have been on the super-soldier track for years -- Battlestar and Patriot -- but they got passed over for someone who doesn't have Cap skills). And over at DC, turning Wally West into a black teenager who needs the guidance of a white man to overcome his inborn criminal tendencies is about as insulting by today's standards as Captain Marvel's sidekick Steamboat was 75 years ago.

Another problem with promoting the Falcon into Cap's role: what happens when they eventually want to bring Steve Rogers back, and you know they will? If giving the shield to the Falcon is a promotion, then taking it away is a _________. Think it through, Marvel.

@ Bort. Who knows if Steve Rogers is ever coming back? Marvel has replaced Bruce Banner with an impish statistics prodigy who treats being a Hulk like a Quad Damage power up. For the first time in decades, I no longer subscribe to any House of Idea comics.

Anyhow, it will be interesting to how long they continue to cater to the Tumblrina crowd.

On the opposite side of the coin I loved the shit out of black Kingpin from Daredevil. I thought the entire movie should have been just him being threatening.

I say Steve Rogers is coming back because he's the default setting on Cap and has been for 75 years now. Also, the Falcon is a terrible fit as a replacement; they only gave him the job as a marketing stunt tied to the movies, and at such point as it no longer seems advantageous to keep him in the role, he's out.

It reminds me of how Marvel doesn't have the movie rights to their mutant characters any longer, so the comics are downplaying mutants (of whom there are suddenly very few) in favor of Inhumans (of whom there are suddenly thousands).

On the other hand, I really loved white Vincent Dinofrio Kingpin from Netflix Daredevil. To the point that Daredevil himself feels pointless, like he's getting in the way of this cool crime drama I want to watch starring Wilson Fisk and his love of white walls.

Anyway, the real test of a good Jimmy Olson is, does he gain retarded new superpowers every other episode? Is he forced to marry a gorilla at least once a year? How many times does Supergirl emotionally abuse him "for his own good?" How many times has he turned into a giant turtle?

It's Lucy Lane who traditionally abuses Jimmy Olsen, and I'm pleased to say she's currently dating him on the show, so there is hope.

Jimmy got turned into a black man; that counts as a Silver Age transformation.

My favorite theory on Jimmy/Lucy doesn't actually hold up, but there's a charm to it. We know that Superman pretended to be someone else (Clark) with a different personality in the Silver Age, and his friends suspected they were the same person. Also in the Silver Age, the sweet and retiring Supergirl was nothing like the vicious shrewish Lucy Lane, even though they looked much alike. Was Jimmy figuring that they were really the same person, and he was putting up with Lucy's abuse because he "knew" she was really the much more appealing Supergirl? Again it doesn't actually hold up, but I like it anyway.

Lucy would be a massive dehumanizing bitch to him, but Superman would pull shit like making Jimmy think he had died and was a ghost now, and then at the end Supes is like, "I convinced everyone in Metropolis to pretend you were a ghost because I needed that to happen so I could stop Dr. Zap's moon laser! You see, it was the only way!" And Jimmy would buy it, every time, because he has no other friends.

Supergirl was probably the only one who wasn't picking on Jimmy, because she was dealing with problems of her own:
