This is the greatest quote of all time. OF ALL TIME! I found it on twitter.

"He would simply only tell us that it was a clock," police spokesman James McLellan says. "He didn't offer an explanation as to what it was for."

SolRo - 2015-09-16

Because it wanted to get to the other side

...wait, dammit, I'm no good at these!

Bort - 2015-09-17

Arabic numerals too, no doubt.

kingarthur - 2015-09-17

Five stars for Bort.

fedex - 2015-09-16

Well, it was nice of Obama to invite him to the White House next week

Hooker - 2015-09-16

I bet you that's when he's going to set off his BOMB.

fedex - 2015-09-16

it's a cunning ruse!

EvilHomer - 2015-09-17

Sure is nice of Mr. NDAA to spin this as a soft-on-terror PR stunt. Perhaps Obama'll invite all those Syrians he killed and Gitmo detainees he never released?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-09-17

Homer Johnson does have a point.

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-09-16

If Oscar were in school today I shudder to think of what kind of dog cage in Guantanamo Bay he'd be bunking in. It's no suprise how shitty the educational end product is if even this feeble stab at creativity gets you arrested and booked at the county jail.

kingarthur - 2015-09-17

No shit. The pre-Columbine and pre-9/11 high school i went to is a world and galaxy away from the reality these kids live in these days. i saw it as a youth social worker. One fuck up and they're out of a regular diploma and into a special class or sent to alternative schools that are just pipelines for youth detention centers.

The Mothership - 2015-09-16

Texas, dude.

Bort - 2015-09-16

"If I owned Texas and Hell, I would rent out Texas and live in Hell."

- General Phil Sheridan

Ugh - 2015-09-17

is it wrong that this makes me wish the die hard 3 "i hate niggers" sandwich board treatment was a real legal sentence we could inflict?

BHWW - 2015-09-17

Apparently everyone realized today that school administrators are twitchy morons who constantly call the cops, think everything is a weapon.

chumbucket - 2015-09-17

If every teacher had a gun this wouldn't be a problem.

betabox - 2015-09-17

I saw it argued on another discussion board that nobody involved actually thought it was a bomb. If they had, they'd have evacuated the school.

Someone just saw this as an opportunity to hassle the dark-skinned kid with the wrong religion.

oddeye - 2015-09-17

maybe it's THE bomb

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-09-17

I am thinking back to the times where students at my high school put those cherry bombs in toilets to make the water explode. Or prank smoke bombs or stink bombs that smelled like rotten eggs.

Kids today are fuuuuuuucked.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-09-17

Thank you, Texas, for making Florida look slightly less shitty.

Rafiki - 2015-09-17

Part of me thinks this story is stupid to the point of unbelievable, but then I remember the city of Boston called in the bomb squad because Cartoon Network hung a few Lite-Brites off of some lamp posts, so I'm not surprised at all. :(

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-09-17

Okay, it sort of looked like a bomb, at least in the photo the cops released. I can appreciate the need to practice due diligence, Really, I think it was the job of the school and the cops to err on the side of caution, and investigate. It was all at least defensible until.

...they handcuffed the kid! That's the point where they lost the benefit of the doubt, completely and for all time. If you go to the police website, it'll tell you that they handcuffed the kid "for his own protection and the protection of officers." Assuming they had determined that Ahmed wasn't armed, that's just stupid. These cops are idiots. They're probably racist, but that's really irrelevant. That's a question of what kind of idiots they are, a finer point that means nothing.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-09-17

They didn't expect there to be any repurcussions because normally there wouldn't be. But Ahmed's father is one of the most famous Muslim activists in the US. So woops.

StanleyPain - 2015-09-17

Don't forget the time that a toy pony had to be blown up by a bomb squad because it was "suspiciously left in the proximity of a playground."

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-09-17

Perhaps the local police were versed in Greek history and didn't want to be caught out like the Trojans?

Bort - 2015-09-17

"city of Boston called in the bomb squad"

That was yet another one of Martha Coakley's proud moments, where she is quoted as saying it "had a very sinister appearance. It had a battery behind it, and wires." I would not want to be Martha Coakley just because there must be times she reflects on her life. Seriously, read up on her:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martha_Coakley

"Okay, it sort of looked like a bomb, at least in the photo the cops released."

"Looked like a bomb" by what standard? This is the uncomfortable truth: very few of us even know what a bomb would look like, and in theory we could be surrounded by them every time we walk down a busy street.

I'm not a bombologist, but I would expect that a bomb is defined primarily by having some sort of explodey material. The wires aren't necessary. The clock isn't necessary. You could theoretically set off a bomb with a lit cigarette ("Stalag 17" spoilers). You could position a magnifying glass to light a fuse when the sun is in the right position. You could set up a thing where a squirrel steps on a metal plate to get a peanut and that's what sets off the bomb. No matter what triggers the explosion, you still absolutely need the part that explodes, if you want to think of it as a bomb.

"So woops."

The correct answer is the Moops.

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-09-17

There are now pictures of the device online. Basically he stripped the plastic shell off a big LED clock, and mounted the guts in a suitcase.

Does it look like a bomb? Depends what you mean.

If you mean a real actual bomb, no it doesn't. There's no explosive, and the entire inside of the case is visible when opened ( which you need to do to see the clock face, he's mounted it on the inside of the briefcase ).

It does look pretty much like a hollywood fake bomb. Black suitcase, big clock face inside with a mass of jumbled wiring and assorted electronic parts.

From what I gathered from the media report, they didn't think it was a real bomb either. The teacher took the device from the boy, and continued to teach the class. The school was never evacuated.

Bort - 2015-09-17

I think there's a tricky grey area in what people think sometimes. You can believe it's likely to be a bomb, you can expect to find proof it's a bomb, even without having any rational grounds to believe it's a bomb. Like that police officer who felt Ahmed was holding out because he wouldn't give any details beyond saying it's a clock ... he definitely thought it was a bomb, he just couldn't find anything to back up his feelings.

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-09-17

I think the cop thought it was a fake bomb, and was wondering why little Ahmed would bring it to school and have it go off in the middle of class. I have to tell you, I just made a quick tardis call to 15 year old Oscar, and he said words to the effect that if he was teased mercilessly about being named Mohammad and being a terrorist who want to blow up the school it would strike him to give them a little of what they want. He'd insist it was a clock, which it was. Let them sweat it out.

But I don't know. The boy seems a lot 'spergier that even little Oscar at that age. He may have just brought the thing to school to try to impress people. Again, totally inside the realm of 15 year old boy possibilities.

Bort - 2015-09-17

Well, he allegedly brought it to show his engineering teacher, who told him to not show it to anyone else. He didn't; it wasn't discovered until the alarm went off in another class. That's kind of jumping through hoops if his intention was to scare people.

TeenerTot - 2015-09-17

Someone set us up the clock.

But really what a shitty thing to do to a kid.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2015-09-17

>>"Looked like a bomb" by what standard?

Not much of a standard, I'll grant you. It sort of looked like a bomb to me, a person who doesn't know what a bomb looks like. Like someone else said, it looks like a bomb in the movies, sort of. I can understand wanting to have it examined by someone who actually knows what a bomb looks like. But when he tells you it's a clock, it's probably a clock.

spikestoyiu - 2015-09-18

I'm not expert (seriously, I'm not, please leave me alone), but what kind of bomb would have an enormous readout on it so you could see how much time you have left before it explodes? Other than movie bombs.

SolRo - 2015-09-18

Smart terrorists that want Americans to panic and further entrench the police state could just start making bombs that look like crappy electronics projects with just enough c4 hidden in it.

The witch-hunt reaction would further alienate young brown kids, raising the chance of radicalization, creating a feedback loop

I mean, honestly, America is probably the most succeptable country to the psychological effects of terrorism, even when it does hardly any damage.

EvilHomer - 2015-09-18

I don't really think "the terrorists" want us to be a police state. The terrorists (whoever they might be) don't actually care what happens to us - their agenda is putting enough pressure on the state so that the US government will back off on it's interventionist foreign policies.

It's the politicians at home who want us to be a police state. They're the ones who benefit from a domestically-situated panopticon, not the Muslims.

Remember: we're not living in Israel. In Israel, the goal of Arab-Israeli terrorism really IS to force Israel to become a police state; the rationale behind this strategy is that, if it can be shown that Israel is a tyrannical dictatorship, then Israel will lose it's credibility as a sovereign state, and Arab-Israeli partisans will have enough moral legitimacy to drive out the Jews once and for all. At this point, Arab-occupied Israel could rejoin Jordan, and the war will be won. The key point to remember is that Arab-Israeli terrorists have a strictly domestic goal, unlike, say, anti-American Saudi terrorists, who want to stop a foreign country from doing things outside of its own borders. The aims of these groups are different; therefore, their strategies, and the rationale behind implementing these strategies, are different.

That guy - 2015-10-03

Yeah, I'm buying the story that this was a deliberate stunt by this kid and his dad.

Also, the clock is just a a typical digital clock taken out of its housing and put in a case.

Both sides suck.
