I dunno, some of it sounds like it was lifted from an old comedy routine, just changed so that it was about film.

I won't argue the cocaine point because I honestly have no idea.

So George Carlin's still alive?

joelkazoo - 2015-05-23

I adore Carlin just as much as your average poeTV regular, but I never understood how he got off complaining about advertising when he went off and did shit like this. Not just this, either. He actually took his anti-advertising routine and tweaked it to sell 10-10-220 Collect Calling Services!

I always think of Bill Hicks when I think about advertising, because he said it best. Not just the "if you're job is in advertising kill yourself this is not a joke" joke, but just the whole Nietzcheian thing about how eventually the abyss stares back at you if you do it long enough. I think it was Hicks that said that it was best that some of our idols like Hendricks, Cobain, Joplin and others died when they did instead of getting old and showing up in car commercials, something like that.. Like a lot of kids of my generation I knew Carlin as the guy from Bill and Ted and knew nothing about his standup philosophy until a good decade later. I'm assuming he got the genius of the movie, but even if he didn't it was a nice paycheck that would supply him with the steady flow of drugs that entered his body. Hicks on the other hand didn't do drugs, except for LSD and nicotine. Adjusting for inflation, I'd say that habit comes to 70 bucks a week, vs. coke, alcohol, vicodin, things that counteract themselves. You drink alcohol and want to get some coke to drink more, and then you get more coke. Eventually you're tired and oxy puts you to sleep because what you really want is more coke. It's like Homer Simpson on the episode where he sues the all you can eat buffet place, that kind of cocktail. Anyway it's probably going to cost you, with inflation again, a good 500 bucks a week if you're being good. So without "sellout" George Carlin, we wouldn't have had regular George Carlin.

hey I_Z. Your blocks of text would be easier to read if you added some line breaks in there. Just a suggestion.

So, bel, George was saying "I am a fucking hypocrite, deal with it!"?

Crab Mentality - 2015-05-23

I don't see this as against George Carlin's ideals at all. He said it himself- if you're seeing him later, see it on the good stuff. He lived well into the DVD era. See him on the best quality recording medium available.

:/

Even George had bills to pay.

joelkazoo - 2015-05-24

True, drugs won't buy themselves!

il fiore bel - 2015-05-24

More specifically, he had an IRS debt to pay off.
