This episode is worth it purely for the reaction. The amount of people upset that their sacred Steven Universe would crossover with a randum fart joke cartoon like Uncle Grandpa was palpable

namtar - 2015-04-09

RIP Pizza Steve

Xenocide - 2015-04-09

ASSHOLE HAD IT COMING.

ashtar. - 2015-04-09

One dumb boring cartoon for children and hipsters mixes with another dumb boring cartoon for children and hipsters and it's super important because dumb boring hipsters on the internet are angry about it and annoying the segment of the internet that I hate because that is how I define my identity is the most important thing in the world.

Cena_mark - 2015-04-09

Shut up Oddeye!

MurgatroidMendelbaum - 2015-04-09

I think SOMEONE is a hardcore Uncle Grandpa fanboy.

Cena_mark - 2015-04-09

I've been meaning to get into Steven Universe. It looks pretty cool. I don't know much about it or its fandom, but its pretty funny that they'd get upset over something like this that's just in good fun.
Does anyone have a link to this butthurt? I don't really know much about tumblir either.

Xenocide - 2015-04-09

Most of the butthurt happened in the imaginations of people who spend all their time getting angry at "Tumblr SJW's" and other internet boogeymen.

I think I saw a couple of people whining about it on Reddit and one Tumblr post complaining about the cheap man-in-a-dress joke at the start, but other than that, most cartoon nerds seemed to basically shrug and declare this a below-average Steven episode with some fun gags here and there.

BHWW - 2015-04-10

Persons denying the existence of Tumblr SJWs may be Tumblr SJWs themselves.

FABIO - 2015-04-10

We were never at war with Williamsburg.

Nominal - 2015-04-09

Is Tumblr mad because of the crossover, or that the happy moral was a direct jab at them? I wouldn't put it past their lack of self awareness to miss it.

fluffy - 2015-04-09

They completely missed it, and were also ultra-fucking-offended by the "man in a dress" joke at the beginning, and offended that they'd turn Steven's anguish over never meeting his mother into a dumb joke and whatever.

So, this was hilarious.

(The episode itself was good too.)

Xenocide - 2015-04-09

Fun fact: Mr. Gus's fan art was actually posted on a real Tumblr account at the same time it appeared on the episode. One of the show's writers had been maintaining an in-character Mr. Gus Tumblr for weeks while pretending it was just a fan blog. A few minutes later he posted the vandalized Pizza Steve version.

THIS GOES DEEPER THAN YOU THINK.

fedex - 2015-04-10

THIS GOES DEEPER THAN I CARE

its like people in the old days arguing about the Fantasy Island/Love Boat crossover, sheesh get a life

Xenocide - 2015-04-10

Is there anything sadder than the insecure internet kid who feels the powerful need to let everyone know he doesn't care about something.

Bort - 2015-04-10

A dog sitting outside a funeral home is probably sadder.

Crab Mentality - 2015-04-09

Steven Universe is a pretty great show, and Uncle Grampa blows. This episode went about as well as it could have.

I helps that they got right out of the gate by saying it was an April fool's joke, and wasn't canon.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-04-09

pretty much sums up my feelings. I keep meaning to watch Stephen Universe because it seems genuinely fun. And also the complete opposite of Uncle Grandpa and Clarence.

infinite zest - 2015-04-10

Clarence is actually a pretty cool show. If this were the 90s, it'd be the Doug to the rest of Nickelodeon's lineup. I was only made aware of it because of the controversy over the gay kiss, which is a big step in childrens' animation even in 2015 (even though it was changed from a lovers' kiss to a peck on the cheek.) Uncle Grandpa I liked at first, because it reminded me of early Don Martin comics, mixed with Mr. Magoo or something, but I take back what I might have said in an earlier UG submission when I said it was my new favorite CN cartoon. That belongs to Steven Universe. I mentioned before that the show was missing both demographics, that kids wouldn't catch any of the late 70s/early 80s anime nostalgia, and hipster adults would find problems, but it's basically like a really good American made RPG that tries to capture the essence of the traditional Japanese ones, like the often forgotten MS-DOS game Albion.

Binro the Heretic - 2015-04-09

I like "Steven Universe" mostly because of the subtle way it takes on the issues arising from our changing society.

I like "Uncle Grandpa" because it's fun to watch when you're half asleep and it fucks with your brain.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2015-04-09

Ah man, that checklist at the end makes it a five.

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-04-10

That's not my baby!

EvilHomer - 2015-04-10

I have never herd of either of these things.

You people and your goddamn cartoons.

fluffy - 2015-04-10

It must be sad being part of a fandom that requires that you completely cut yourself off from all other sources of entertainment.

MurgatroidMendelbaum - 2015-04-10

Bronie segregation is an issue that affects us all.

EvilHomer - 2015-04-10

No, fluffy, I'm not part of the Steven Universe fandom. Assuming that's even a real thing.

EvilHomer - 2015-04-10

Murgatroid - I wouldn't say that I'm "segregated", it's just that I don't have cable and don't watch TV, and even if I did, cartoons would not be high on my list of things to watch. I do enjoy My Little Pony, that is true - I enjoy it because it's an awesome show with great writing and a positive message, not because it's a cartoon. As an example, consider Better Call Saul. I like Better Call Saul so far, and I've been making a point to watch new episodes each week. But I don't watch _every_ hour-long drama-dey, and I daresay that there's probably a great number of broadly similar, scripted, serialized shows which I've never even herd of, let alone seen. And why would I? Why would anyone? With the amount of media out there to be consumed these days, it would be literally impossible for any one person to follow and be aware of every single extent franchise and fandom.

As for the broader issue of brony segregation, I really don't know how to comment on that. I'm was not even aware that this was a "thing" - is it a real social phenomenon? Is it something you just made up? Not being a brony, I don't really have the slightest idea WHAT the mindset of your average pony fan is; the yearly State of the Herd report might be able to provide us with some hard statistical insight into this matter, but offhoof I am not aware of any data points within it that can be used to ascertain whether cultural segregation is common within the brony community or not, and frankly the burden of proof is on you to provide evidence for this claim.

(informally, I'd say "not", as fully 100% of the out-of-the-stable brony users here on poeTV are well aware of a great many other things besides ponies)

EvilHomer - 2015-04-10

And anyways, neither of you have been any help whatsoever in answering the underlying question: what is a Steven Universe? What is an Uncle Whatever?

I am assuming, from the watermark and from the comments, that they are fairly new Cartoon Network shows, marketed towards either hipsters or kids (probably both). Is this correct? And if so, how do they measure up to the two hipster-toons that I AM currently aware of, to wit, Adventure Time and Gravity Falls?

Sanest Man Alive - 2015-04-10

Homer, the way you pretend your pony cartoon isn't exactly the same sort of "hipster-toon" you're denigrating is just precious.

EvilHomer - 2015-04-10

It's a completely different sort of hipster toon. In fact, in many ways it's an anti-hipster toon (see my previous comments on MLP and the New Sincerity movement).

And who's denigrating what now? Murgatroid and fluffy are denigrating ponies for absolutely no reason, but that's about it. As I said, I don't watch cartoons and I have no idea what these two shows are about; how can I "denigrate" something I'm barely even aware exists?!

MurgatroidMendelbaum - 2015-04-10

One star for each of your paragraphs I did not read.

EvilHomer - 2015-04-10

Short attention spans are a common symptom of cartoon over-watching!

Boomer The Dog - 2015-04-12

When Ponies first came on the Furry scene, there was some unease over the new group that suddenly seemed to be there. Some Furs jumped to being Bronies too and jokes were made about due to the culture clash, we even had some of them on the radio.

I think there was some envy too, Bronies quickly took up and had a scene and were having fun, where Furry has struggled with itself more over the years and has grown slowly.

I've seen it written more than once where a Fur attended a Brony function and loved the understanding and friendship, where Furry was tripped up in politics in their view.
