I love rabbit. I would totally eat this.

Fun fact:

These were introduced to the Louisiana wetlands by, amongst a few others, the McIlhenny family, creators of Tabasco sauce. They have wildly overpopulated the area and cause massive damage and erosion throughout southern Louisiana.

I've watched them be fed to alligators, it was very satisfying. If I can find the footage I'll upload it.

Also fuck Tabasco, that shit is horrible.

baleen - 2015-04-08

Weren't they introduced as fur animals and for a while had a good run in that industry?

yogarfield - 2015-04-08

They were introduced for their fur, though I don't know how successful they were. The story I got was that the McIlhenny family ("them assholes out on Avery Island") were breeding nutria for the furs, and after being released into the wild (both intentionally, and after breeding pens were compromised during a hurricane) the population skyrocketed to such destructive numbers that there was an actual bounty for nutria pelts.

Source: A 3rd generation French Cajun fur trapper who has killed thousands of these things. He doesn't eat them though, he just feeds them to his gators.

Tabasco is wonderful.

yogarfield - 2015-04-08

Tabasco is flavorless red food coloring. Real cajuns use Crystal.

These things are in Mississippi too. When my parents first moved us here from NOLA, these things were in the backyard and wetlands next to the apartment complex constantly. Me and my brothers used to shoot them with BB guns. You can't hurt them with it, unless you get their eyes, because their pelt is so thick and slick. They just jump a little or begrudgingly walk a little ways away out of the line of fire. They also make these low moaning noises that sound like a kid saying "mooooooom" at night.

kingarthur - 2015-04-08

*in coastal Mississippi. I don't know about the rest of the uncivilized redneck heathens and literary wannabes in this state what live north of I-10.

Cayenne and vinegar is cayenne and vinegar. It doesn't matter what bottle it's in.
