Man, this song sucks.

Caminante Nocturno - 2015-03-24

Even by the standards of the time, this show was completely butchered for the English dub. The worst was dubbing the one-eyed giraffe to sound like a girl because apparently they weren't comfortable having a gay giraffe in a cartoon.

Don't even get me started on what they did to the second and third seasons.

EvilHomer - 2015-03-24

Caminante, I want to know everything you know about this show. Start from the beginning, and leave no details untold.

Crab Mentality - 2015-03-24

I heard they just threw out the scripts for most of the dubs- rather than try to make sense of Japanese jokes and references, they just went ahead and MST3K'd it.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2015-03-24

Holy wow, this show is obscure. There's virtually no information pertaining to it online and only a handful of people on message boards seem to know it ever existed.

It's like the took every late 80s/early 90s cartoon cliche and mashed them all together to make this show, and added an evil giraffe.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2015-03-24

And yeah apparently this is going viral with people arguing over whether it's legit or not.

EvilHomer - 2015-03-24

The messageboard comments all seem to originate from one guy, going by the handle SuperBobo, who conveniently "found" this video in his Google alerts.

For example:

The only independent confirmation of this show's existence was the rough sketch produced by "baxterstockman1981". However, this was baxterstockman's one and only post to the RetroJunk forum - smells like a sock puppet setup.

Xenocide - 2015-03-24

IT'S A CONSPIRACY TO TRICK THE PEOPLE INTO EMBRACING RETRO FURRY ANIME. OBAMA'S REALLY DONE IT THIS TIME.

EvilHomer - 2015-03-24

Well yes, Xenocide, it appears so, although what the motives are is anyone's guess.

Oscar Wildcat - 2015-03-24

It was credible right up to the Rooster; after which the bias cut carrot sealed the deal. Plus, it's got a lot of elements you wouldn't see until much later in these kinds of shows.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2015-03-24

A bird, a frog, a rabbit, a fox...

Is this viral marketing for the new Star Fox game?

infinite zest - 2015-03-24

I dunno, most intros that I remember, like Thundercats, Swat Kats, Cats Cats etc. had pretty high quality intros and outros, and then the actual shows dropped significantly in quality... this might be the new Cool Cat!

The only thing that gets me is the tracking thing: I've never attempted to upload from a VHS, so I could be wrong, but I don't think that would appear on a screen after it was uploaded, unless this was a direct video taken off a TV with another device (like an iPhone), which clearly it isn't.

infinite zest - 2015-03-24

er.. not the tracking itself, but the little white "TRACKING" gauge, or whatever you call it that's adjusted at the beginning.

EvilHomer - 2015-03-24

Yeah, the TRACKING gauge looked suspect to me, too. It's out of place, doesn't make sense for a direct rip, and seems to have been added in order to better sell the idea that what we're watching is a relic of the VCR age. Like if somebody uploaded a "long lost" web cartoon from the mid-90s, and the recording started off with an AOL modem animation.

fluffy - 2015-03-24

Counterpoint: The tracking thing is exactly what it would look like if you recorded directly off a shitty VCR into a video capture card though. Remember, what the VCR sends to the TV is exactly what the capture card will pick up. It's not like consumer video capture hardware is going to directly load the video from the tape or something. There's no such thing as a "direct rip" from videotape, at least not with consumer hardware.

garcet71283 - 2015-03-24

If this were real, I would imagine that we would have seen an entire furry subculture centered around it by now, ala Road Rovers...

garcet71283 - 2015-03-24

In response to dairyqueenlatifah

Prequel perhaps, where Peppy is the lead?

EvilHomer - 2015-03-25

Word, fluffy? I did not know that; is the Tracking overlay added to the signal before it's transmitted from the VCR?

In any case, it's still very fake. What are your thoughts on it? Do you think that it's real? Why do you suppose this was made, and why did the creator bother taking steps to make it seem more credible, going through the trouble of posting to forums and listing an item on ebay last year (presumably around the time he or she started working on the animation, in anticipation of the release)?

EvilHomer - 2015-03-25

Garcet raises a very good point. The first thing I did last night was check WikiFur and FurAffinity - nothing. Nevermind that this intro is chock full of homages to nerd-staples like Ninja Turtles, Thundercats, Usagi Yojimbo, Star Fox, HeMan, and Ronin Warriors; STAMR could have been the crappiest thing ever, aired only once on some public access channel in Canada, and the Furs would still have a fan community dedicated to it.

Xenocide - 2015-03-25

What's fishy about the tracking isn't how it looks, it's the timing. Why would the tape deck wait for the logo animation to play and then start the tracking at the exact moment the theme song starts? VCR's were set to adjust tracking as soon as you put the tape in. It should be there and gone by the time the theme song begins.

We will return to CSI: FAKE 90'S CARTOON DETECTIVE UNIT.

garcet71283 - 2015-03-25

I'm going with this was made by the same guy(s) who made the Space Stallions video a while back. The direction is very, very similar (especially the choice of angles).

More precisely, check out 0:40, 0:45....the villain at 0:48 is almost identical to the one in the Space Stallions video.

Calling shenanigans...albeit very, very well done shenanigans.

garcet71283 - 2015-03-25

Female vocalist sounds very similar too...

gmol - 2015-03-25

Beautiful shenanigans.

The rabbit costume is definitely referencing the Megaman X design.

fluffy - 2015-03-25

Oh, I have no doubt that this is a modern creation. But the tracking overlay isn't the suspicious part to me. I've had shitty VCRs where the tracking thing comes up all the damn time if you have a sufficiently-stretched tape.

I'm guessing that this is a newly-made animation that they then recorded to a shitty old tape and then captured off a VCR. The signal itself looks way too good to have been sitting on magnetic tape for 20+ years, but otherwise the damage looks really convincing.

Xenocide - 2015-03-24

Matt Groening created The Simpsons after Fox bought the rights to Life in Hell and turned it into this pilot.

Spaceman Africa - 2015-03-24

Either good viral marketing or evidence of a defunct alternate timeline

Wander - 2015-03-25

Calling a longshot: this is Frog Fractions 2.
