You have a lovely voice. The accent stands out to me, but not in a cartoonish way.

badideasinaction - 2015-03-25

Glad it sounds good to people.

The accent on this one is a bit skewed from my normal (i.e. fairly neutral Canadian) accent for silly purposes. I'm not normally as drawl-ish in regular life, it just kinda fit the romantic theme better than NPR announcer voice, super-cheeseball voice, pseudo-British dramatic voice and generic announcer voice. Also the last two need me to really project to have them sound right and the housemate is probably better off not hearing his landlord shouting about raping corpses.

All I know is, in a few weeks when generation 2 of the thing I built is done, that's getting posted.

badideasinaction - 2015-03-26

Dude, that stuff's awesome. And also way more deserving of vidspace here than me reading stuff into the mic. Maybe I'll diversify and post some of the other modular/musical bad ideas here too, I'm always apprehensive after the old civil war had some people being kinda psycho to one another, not to mention tying this identity to my more public facing one.

EvilHomer - 2015-03-25

That's pretty good! You've got an excellent reading voice; you say your biggest hurdle is the visuals, right? What about, instead of a comic, you just read a fanfic, like Gonterman's "American Kitsune"? You could make a shortlooping clip of random Gonterman art, or even just one still image?

EvilHomer - 2015-03-25

Or, no no actually, wait. There's this autistic guy I really love on DeviantArt, BraniacAdam. He's virtually unknown outside of the Mr Men community, but he does tons of multiverse crossover self-insertion fanfics, like how he personally goes into the Mortal Kombat universe to help Star Fox fight the armies Rita Repulsa and Doctor Robotnik, all lovingly illustrated in MSPaint.

I hesitate to talk that much about him, because he's got all the makings of a ChrisChan/ JustinRPG, and I'd hate to see him get bullied off the internet. He seems like a nice guy, and artists like that are hard to come by. But if you'd be willing to do a tasteful, professional reading of some of his work, I for one would love it!

EvilHomer - 2015-03-25

If you'd like to check it out, here is his DA gallery:

badideasinaction - 2015-03-25

American Kitsune would work pretty well, maybe just a happy slideshow or tangentially related clipart to go along with it.

BrainiacAdam might be doable, his stuff is a bit trickier since his dialogue is script style with

person a:

person b:

Instead of described conversation. Maybe just using the art of the characters he provides as talking heads will do the trick there.

As for not wanting to be too much of a dick, I understand that one. I mean, things like Cupcakes or Cannibal Corpse are self-admittedly meant to be off the deep end, but I could see if I could read one of them fairly straight like the Mortal Kombat one I saw and hopefully it's taken well (with full crediting and stuff) and if he wants it down, well, that's cool too.

infinite zest - 2015-03-25

Of COURSE there's a Mr. Men community. Haven't thought about that for at least a quarter of a century.

EvilHomer - 2015-03-25

I found him through the Mortal Kombat fandom. Mortal Kombat and Mr Men, those are his two favorite things.

We're all free to laugh at him, of course, I just don't want to see him humiliated and trolled off the internet like Chris and JustinRPG were.

Also, I'm not kidding about him being a fixture in the Mr Men community. I looked into it, and he's both a sysop and one of the top editors on the Mr Men Wiki, having been personally responsible for over 1,627 edits to that site, plus who knows how many more under his previous usernames. He's not THE top editor on the Mr Men Wiki, of course, but he's certainly earned his place in the Mr Men fandom community.

badideasinaction - 2015-03-25

I really wish I could be surprised about a Mr. Men community, but I can't be. I can only imagine the places the fanfiction goes...

Old_Zircon - 2015-03-25

Fuck, somehow I never thought of a Mr.Men community even though it's not surprising at all. It's a shame, I found a pretty great old Mr. Strong shirt at the good will last summer and now I'm going to feel weird wearing it.

Old_Zircon - 2015-03-25

Like, I'll simultaneously feel like a weirdo and a poseur.

In a different way than usual, I mean.

infinite zest - 2015-03-25

Now do Cupcakes!

Just kidding, unless you want to.. awesome voice. I've been self-conscious of my own voice ever since I was working this job and the guy who normally does our inclement weather/closure messages was out sick (he had a straight-up voice made for radio) and I was like "I can do it!" and they were like "have you LISTENED to your voice? No way!" Burn. That being said, I think I'd fit in on NPR (I sound a bit like Ira Glass) but I digress..

I know a girl who does books on tape (or audiobooks, whatever they're called now) and she said it was a pretty easy gig to get. Anyway, awesome voice. Now whenever I read a post from you I'll associate it with this voice.

badideasinaction - 2015-03-25

Cupcakes would actually be a fun project, not gonna lie. I imagine it's a bit over-saturated but I could see having fun with some of the audio mangling stuff I have handy. I have pitch and voice shifting stuff handy.

As for voice, some of that is just practice too; announcer mode sounds really weird in casual conversation so I don't really sound like that in day to day. I sorta found that voice after practicing because I was going to be announcing an event. It still surprises some people when I break out the various versions of the voice and then they usually ask me to read things for them.

Had a quick look at the recording thing Amazon does, but sadly that's not built for Canadian taxes yet. I'd probably have a lot of fun reading all the trashy romance novels about being taken by Dinosaurs or something for a bit at least.

fluffy - 2015-03-25

My only complaint is that you should put a black outline around the text to make it easier to read but we're here to listen, not read, so it's a minor quibble really.

badideasinaction - 2015-03-25

Nah, that's totally understandable. I'm okay with audio, I'm good with photos, but I'm still clueless to the high tech of Windows Movie Maker for doing bordered text quickly; that was just me being lazy and wanting to submit it before bed rather than pick better pictures or open it up in Photoshop and do it there instead.

fluffy - 2015-03-25

Yeah I've only used Windows Movie Maker very briefly (to help my sister with a short documentary she shot) and all I remember about it is that the text tools really fucking sucked. And it looks like they've even removed features from it over time.

Doing a text outline in Photoshop is real easy (just add a stroke effect to the layer). Or you might try using VLC to "bake in" subtitles that you provide in a text file or whatever but that's probably way too much effort for this.

The Mothership - 2015-03-25

This is definitely POETV worthy, whether made by one of our own or not. Hey badideasinaction!
