Also, pop-culturally decades are about 3-5 years behind the calendar, often with a year or two of a buffer zone in between, while the marketing industry tries to figure out how to co-opt some new youth culture thing. For example, the stereotypes of 70s pop culture (disco, bell bottoms, stuff like that) were really only a thing from about '74 to '82. Most of the stereotypes we associate with 60s pop culture were big from about '66 to maybe '72.

I'd say the 80s ended around 2002 and 90s were about 1994-2003.

Grunge was pretty 80s, and the rise of bands like Nirvana and Alice In Chains (and the term "grunge" of course) mark the tail end of it. Just like the invention of the idea of "hippies" by Time magazine in 1967 really marks the beginning of the end of that phenomenon, which really happened between '62 and '66.

What is 90's nostalgia, anyway? 8-bit video games and... nostalgia for the 80's? Maybe some cartoon shows?

I mean, I lived through the 90's and apart from technological changes, I can't really envision the same aesthetic previous decades had. The 90's just seem to blend into the Aughts for me.

I dunno, this isn't that bad. It looks like a poor man's Jamie Hewlett or something. And if it was 1999, that was pretty much the thing: stuff like Gorillaz was legitimately awesome, at least to an 18 year-old kid like me. The 90s ads seemed to have more of an anti-authoritarian vibe to them, like SNES' "PLAY IT LOUD" and Sega's response, and zeitgeisty films like Hackers, stuff that seemed cool. Like, I wanted to live at the Hackers' crash pad and fuck Angelina Jolie in a swimming pool. I don't know if 9/11 directly changed the dynamic, but I noticed a shift in advertising to more conformity, like "if you don't buy our product 9/11 might happen to YOU!" ever so subtly.

As for ads themselves, they will always be ads. I did see a legitimately brilliant ad for Geico recently that's like a fake "you can skip this ad in 5..4.." and everyone at the dinner table stage-freezes and a dog jumps up on the table and starts eating all the food and knocking shit over while they're waiting for the ad to be over. As for Grunge, yeah. It bled into "alternative." I was a little young for the scene but a former co-worker gave me a copy of the Seattle Rocket (which became The Stranger) from I think 1988 that he found cleaning out his room, and the term was used the way "Metal" and "Punk" is used, and it was all devoted to bands like Mudhoney and The Melvins, and a few bands to look out for like Nirvana. And then it just blew up. But for marketing purposes, "Grunge" was long hair and flannel and not the music itself. It happened so quickly that the O.Gs (Original Grungers)? dropped the moniker completely.
