Finally, a Hobbit movie that gets its shit done in less than 90 minutes. Automatically superior to anything Peter Jackson has put out recently.

I haven't watched it, but I might later. Cool! That's also more how I imagined Bilbo reading the book. Freeman's a great actor, and if he was the weight that he was in Hitchhikers Guide it might have worked, but he's like super buff and attractive as shit now.

and lets not forget the Rankin and Bass film

I'm unashamed to admit that I thought the R&B Return of the King was better than Jackson's.

I liked Jackson's Return of the King, but I never saw it in theatres, just the DVD with all the extra footage that had to be cut. And from what I can tell, they cut out enough in the theatrical release to make it barely seem like the book of the same name. I think it just won best picture because of all the hard work. And like it or not, The Hobbit trilogy is definitely that same labor, if nothing else. I was watching a behind the scenes clip with Christopher Lee (I believe it's going to be his final role) and Lee, being 93, couldn't get to New Zealand, so they brought a crew up to England and greenscreened him in. The whole clip, Jackson and Lee are just shooting the shit, laughing, while the crew's like "hurry it up" and then they get absorbed by his awesomeness too. And the result is like 3 seconds of actual footage of Lee.

In a way it's kind of the opposite of Abrahams and Star Trek, which just seemed like "alright this ain't your daddy's Star Trek" making it all extreme and fast-paced, and all the while Abrahams seems to have the casual Star Trek knowledge of someone like myself. It seemed more like "uhh yeah, let's just appease these fans by getting the guy who played, uhh, Doctor Spock.. Mr. Abrahams, that's Mr. Spock.. I don't care what his name is, just get the guy who played him!" Jackson's LotR's were your daddy's LotRs, but they were also your own. And they were beautiful to watch.

Your opinions are wrong.

Oh shit you're right!

I recently read about a daughter that insisted Bilbo was a girl, and it apparently wildly enhanced the story and made it a really empowering story of feminism.

snothouse - 2014-12-30

Wow, that's a non-fact that could be applied to any movie with a male protagonist!

I recently heard from a friend's brother who read an article in Harpers that said Sarah Jessica Parker was a horse, and it apparently wildly enhanced Sex & the City and made it a really inspiring story of animal rights.

This reminds me of something I once read about an easy way to write female characters - write them as male, flip the gender and change the bare minimum needed to make that work. KC Green is writing (and Anthony 'Nedroid' Clark drawing) a fantasy-western comic with a stereotypical mysterious grizzled poncho-wearing wanderer - who just happens to be a woman.

Hah, Gandalf looks like he's been moonlighting as the frontman for Uriah Heep.
