Casually making light of intense tragedy at 4:40 o_O

YHWH's big swinging balls. Praise Him!

What I'm hearing is: sci-fi has gotten so lazy, there's no crazy million-dollar pulsar-themed movies these days.

SolRo - 2014-12-01

There are probably scripts out there, but the audience is too stupid for hard sci-fi to have a chance anymore (or ever?).

SolRo - 2014-12-01

I take that back, most movie writers are too stupid for hard sci-fi to begin with.

Hooker - 2014-12-01

I've found that the people that speak very broadly and very vaguely about "science" tend to be just as scientifically illiterate as the people they bemoan. Having respect for the scientific tradition is not the same as being scientifically literate and, while I make no claims to be scientifically minded myself, I'm willing to bet that making sweeping generalizations about how stupid the population is doesn't agree well with the scientific method.

SolRo - 2014-12-01

It's not a sweeping generalization, it's statistical fact.

I'm sorry. I clearly should not have questioned your scepticism and scientific rigour.

i did not know anything about the cores of neutron stars. It's truly awesome.

jreid - 2014-12-01

Five stars for neutron stars is not enough stars. They're fucking amazing things. Check out the wiki on them and prepare to have your mind repeatedly blown:

pretty neat that something in our universe can move at 25% the speed of light on a regular basis

Three uses of the word "extreme" in five minutes, yet I see no Mountain Dew anywhere.

Vaidency - 2014-12-03

Your Mtn Dew has been fused into Iron-Based Gluon Soup Dew. A can of it now has greater density than the continent of Australia. Dude.

I kind of wish that they'd talked a bit about tidal forces, and did a better job of explaining why they're called "pulsars," but other than that, I love this video, and I love that neutron stars are a thing, and I love that this universe is so amazing.

Unmerciful Crushing Force - 2014-12-02

So I recently came to Spain and have been doing basic science with elementary schoolers. It's required me to go and brush up on my basic scientific theory and man the whole nature of even an atom gives me a renewed awe and respect for our universe.

If you want something pretty sciencey but accessible to play with, it's worth checking out these simulations.
