looks cool, after reading the synopsis I'm thinking the director must have read Snowcrash alot

Innocent Bystander - 2014-11-12

It's based on a book that's about similar ideas regarding language as Snow Crash.

Why can't they do a Snow Crash movie, btw? It could be this really awesome eighties-throwback-retro-cyberpunk thing.

fedex - 2014-11-12

that is so depressing now

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-11-12

Because Snow Crash is like a lot of Cyberpunk: It's a bunch of ideas thrown together in a nigh nonsensical mish-mash with a love of anime/Japan tossed in because swords.

Wacky religion? Check.
Internet stand-in? Sure.
Programmers are gods? Of course.
Corporate dystopia that's still somehow funny instead of actually as terrifying as real life? Pretty much.

Not to mention that Hiro Protagonist goes through so many changes for no apparent logical reason (a gargoyle? Really? After everything that came before?). It recycles the tired (even when the book was written) trope of the human brain being as "hackable" as a computer. Blargh.

Besides, everything I've read about Neal Stephenson tells me he's so far up his own asshole, he's become his own Mary Sue.

Innocent Bystander - 2014-11-12

First of all, Snow Crash IS cyberpunk.

> It's a bunch of ideas thrown together in a nigh nonsensical mish-mash

Dude, just because it's hokey or nonsensical doesn't mean it wouldn't be flippin' awesome.

Robin Kestrel - 2014-11-12

I would say it is a parody of cyberpunk, as well as a criticism of unfettered capitalism. I think it would make an awesome movie if the right director did it.

Simillion - 2014-11-12

Diamond age is way fucking better, read that.

Syd Midnight - 2014-11-18

>Besides, everything I've read about Neal Stephenson tells me he's so far up his own asshole, he's become his own Mary Sue.

Stephenson proves that no matter how blatant you make your satire there will still be nerds who get angry because it went right over their heads, because they weren't expecting their own genre to be criticized.

Diamond Age is a much better book, and my favorite part of it is his vicious takedown of steampunk where a neo-Victorian sits down and explains to an audience, slowly and carefully over an entire chapter, how the Victorian mindset is a terrified bulwark of bloody racism, militant xenophobia, and hypocritical false morals that will never ever accept you no matter how religiously you follow the rules and customs because you were born a dirty foreigner and always will be.

misterbuns - 2014-11-11

This is a great movie.

This isn't that new of an idea, this movie just nails it.

baleen - 2014-11-12

Yeah it's a great little sleeper. I caught it late one night randomly and stayed the whole way through.

Nominal - 2014-11-11

This movie is very very good...

...up until they reveal the cause of everyone going crazy. It's like they had college community writing class brainstorm the most pretentious premise possible for a zombie movie.

misterbuns - 2014-11-11

totally. would have been much better if it would have ended in the familiar way of every other zombie / crazy movie.

What's so interesting about 'language' anyway?

hey you guys caught up on The Walking Dead? SO GOOD.

Maggot Brain - 2014-11-11

It makes more sense if you think about it in the old school way, back when zombies were created by a magic curse. Now I've seen the movie but that's my guess.

Nominal - 2014-11-12

See that's the problem. This movie had a good thing going but then decided it was all for nothing if it didn't make misterbuns feel so much smarter than the mundane masses who never invite him to water cooler conversations.

Innocent Bystander - 2014-11-12

You are the worst.

Gmork - 2014-11-12

Oh, misterbuns was being sarcastic?

Because what he said is all true. Language is boring when and trite in the context of explaining a zombie apocalypse, and the newest season of the walking dead finally gets away from that motherfucking prison. And I am also disappointed my (years old) idea of fire-hosing decomposing zombies will now have to be omitted from my Screenplay-That-Will-Never-Be-Fully-Realized.

Adham Nu'man - 2014-11-12

The movie is overthinking so you don't have to. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the fucking thing. It's funny as hell, creepy as fuck, and while it was made with approximately it still manages to be more entertaining that 99% of Zombie shit out there. WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT OUT OF LIFE?!?

giygusattack - 2014-11-12

Walking Dead is better this season, but I'm calling bullshit on all face/neck stabs killing zombies.

Wait, what were we talking about?

misterbuns - 2014-11-12

zombie apocalypses at this point are actually the definition of trite.

taking a familiar (read financeable) idea and doing something new with it is interesting and good.

you can pretend I work in a cubicle if that makes you feel good, but movies are actually what I do for a living.

That guy - 2014-11-12

Gmork sounds like he might be a Walking Dead fan . . . . .
Swarm him!!

Gmork - 2014-11-12

Oh it's different from other zombie movies? Guess that's enough for misterbuns.

Personally I prefer different _AND_ good. This was like a first year film student's attempt to end a movie.

That guy - 2014-11-12

Please don't say Walking Dead is better in terms of ideas, or dialogue, or acting.

Robin Kestrel - 2014-11-11

This is one of those movies I wanted to like, but it got a little ridiculous at the kiss/kill scene. Like Nominal said above, it's a great movie to a certain point.

Maggot Brain - 2014-11-11

If I'm understanding the plot correctly the monster is language zombies?

fedex - 2014-11-11

Basically (as outlined in Snowcrash) a spoken (or written) word can affect the deep structures of the brain because of the way we learn language.
This movie is just extrapolating that idea to the Nth degree.

That guy - 2014-11-12

N = 2

yogarfield - 2014-11-12

Echolalia zombies.

chumbucket - 2014-11-12

Trying to remind Quebec that English is a hidden killer.

FABIO - 2014-11-12

That was the first thing I thought when I watched it.

Born in the RSR - 2014-11-12

Just saw this, loved it. Thanks!

Adham Nu'man - 2014-11-12

Glad you liked it. :)
