Because Snow Crash is like a lot of Cyberpunk: It's a bunch of ideas thrown together in a nigh nonsensical mish-mash with a love of anime/Japan tossed in because swords.

Wacky religion? Check.
Internet stand-in? Sure.
Programmers are gods? Of course.
Corporate dystopia that's still somehow funny instead of actually as terrifying as real life? Pretty much.

Not to mention that Hiro Protagonist goes through so many changes for no apparent logical reason (a gargoyle? Really? After everything that came before?). It recycles the tired (even when the book was written) trope of the human brain being as "hackable" as a computer. Blargh.

Besides, everything I've read about Neal Stephenson tells me he's so far up his own asshole, he's become his own Mary Sue.

First of all, Snow Crash IS cyberpunk.

Dude, just because it's hokey or nonsensical doesn't mean it wouldn't be flippin' awesome.

I would say it is a parody of cyberpunk, as well as a criticism of unfettered capitalism. I think it would make an awesome movie if the right director did it.

Stephenson proves that no matter how blatant you make your satire there will still be nerds who get angry because it went right over their heads, because they weren't expecting their own genre to be criticized.

Diamond Age is a much better book, and my favorite part of it is his vicious takedown of steampunk where a neo-Victorian sits down and explains to an audience, slowly and carefully over an entire chapter, how the Victorian mindset is a terrified bulwark of bloody racism, militant xenophobia, and hypocritical false morals that will never ever accept you no matter how religiously you follow the rules and customs because you were born a dirty foreigner and always will be.

Yeah it's a great little sleeper. I caught it late one night randomly and stayed the whole way through.

It makes more sense if you think about it in the old school way, back when zombies were created by a magic curse. Now I've seen the movie but that's my guess.

See that's the problem. This movie had a good thing going but then decided it was all for nothing if it didn't make misterbuns feel so much smarter than the mundane masses who never invite him to water cooler conversations.

Because what he said is all true. Language is boring when and trite in the context of explaining a zombie apocalypse, and the newest season of the walking dead finally gets away from that motherfucking prison. And I am also disappointed my (years old) idea of fire-hosing decomposing zombies will now have to be omitted from my Screenplay-That-Will-Never-Be-Fully-Realized.

The movie is overthinking so you don't have to. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the fucking thing. It's funny as hell, creepy as fuck, and while it was made with approximately it still manages to be more entertaining that 99% of Zombie shit out there. WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT OUT OF LIFE?!?

Walking Dead is better this season, but I'm calling bullshit on all face/neck stabs killing zombies.

taking a familiar (read financeable) idea and doing something new with it is interesting and good.

Personally I prefer different _AND_ good. This was like a first year film student's attempt to end a movie.

Please don't say Walking Dead is better in terms of ideas, or dialogue, or acting.

Basically (as outlined in Snowcrash) a spoken (or written) word can affect the deep structures of the brain because of the way we learn language.
This movie is just extrapolating that idea to the Nth degree.
