I saw this a few days ago and it really bummed me out.

Gmork - 2014-07-05

Sounds like she didn't want to admit she was obstructing the street.

Yes, you can be arrested for that. For once a police video doesn't have me yelling at my monitor.

Nominal - 2014-07-05

Arrested for failing to show ID?

millerman13 - 2014-07-05

She wasn't obstructing the street. Most reports confirm that a construction site was blocking the sidewalk which forced pedestrians to walk in or at least cross the street near the work. Tens of dozens of students routinely do this everyday at that spot. Give me a break.

EvilHomer - 2014-07-05

Gmork needs his own theme song.

baleen - 2014-07-05

Making fun of fat people falling down = A sin against Gmork.
Cops beating up some black professor for not having ID = A reasonable and deserved display of police force.

Maru - 2014-07-05

pot meet kettle

Gmork - 2014-07-05

Continuing to talk back to police is not suggested. She should have used some of her wisdom as a professor and realized that you can't talk yourself out of a being arrested and hide your hands when they are attempting to handcuff you and you are aware of that fact. The fact you're trying to make this into some other issue is not surprising and a little bit sad.

Don't talk back to the police and actively, physically resist when they have already plainly stated they intend to arrest you. The cop may have been a dick and opted to call her out on a bullshit technicality in an area known for student foot traffic, which is a lack of common sense on his part - trying to resist arrest is a lack of common sense on hers.

But yeah, just go straight to racist/partisan throwaway jokes instead.

EvilHomer - 2014-07-05

So now the problem is she's resisting arrest? I thought you said the problem was she was obstructing traffic by walking across the street?

But yeah, you're right. Getting all uppity was a mistake. Women, right? It's much better to let the cops do whatever they want, because it's an established fact that power-tripping police officers are just and reasonable in their dealings with black people, especially black people who clearly make more money than the officers do.

SolRo - 2014-07-05

EH, do you have some examples of people righteously resisting arrest against dick power-tripping cops and having it end well?

Or any examples of cops giving a shit about an arrestees excuses?

If someone says they are right and cops are wrong, should the cops stop and break out a court room and jury on the spot to have it decided in the middle of the road?

Some self-righteous bullshit should be saved for the courts...street cops are neither trained or paid sufficiently to give a shit.

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-07-05

Whether you be a black lady college professor or a white Free Man on the Land, you can and will be arrested for failing to show valid state or federal ID when asked by law enforcement. Sadly, she did not, and the usual raft of bullshit followed. I have sympathy but am not sure why this requires a national discourse?

EvilHomer - 2014-07-05

SolRo - This one. The cop's been suspended, civil rights groups are up in arms, the blogosphere's abuzz, and this professor is now the cause de jure for her entire community (tenure much?!). She got roughed up, and she's due in court, but all in all it's not looking so bad.

Whether or not something "ends well" is all a matter of perspective. When confronting an abuse of power, that abuse won't be defused in the short term by resisting it, no. One can expect quite a lot of shit to rain down on one's head by choosing to engage in civil disobedience. But in the long term? In the end game? History is full of success stories from people who didn't just shut their mouths and acquiesce. Rosa Parks, MLK, Thomas Paine, Gandhi, hell this professor's looking at a couple weeks in jail, tops. That's nothing. This was only a small fight and a small victory, but good on her anyways.

memedumpster - 2014-07-05

I love the "sidewalk is lava" defense for authoritarian donkeyfuckery.

Being a free and dignified person is hard, best to just be cop-raped and hope the cop-rape-court fixes it for me. Hitler could have used more Jews like you guys, you'd have volunteered to gas yourselves.

EvilHomer - 2014-07-05

Mr Wildcat - that's not necessarily true. ID laws are handled on a state by state basis, and not all states have them. They're fairly modern, they're constitutionally questionable, and even when the legal system upholds them, they're still bullshit. As Azmo so aptly implies below, these sort of laws really aren't any different from the "papers please" policies of out-of-the-closet national security states. These laws aren't utilized very often, not currently at any rate, but that doesn't make the fact they exist any less worrisome. There is a definite tendency these days to expand the definition of crime and allow punitive measures to be used at any time such measures might be seen as convenient - criminalizing a lack of identification is most definitely one of these legal overreaches, and is most definitely insane. If nothing else, THAT is a thing that's worth having a national discourse over.

There's also the issue of racial profiling, which is also worth discussing. Sure, the racial profiling of *African American* individuals may not seem like a big deal, now that Arabs are spending decades in concentration camps and Latinos are getting shot at our borders, but issues are still issues, right?

SolRo - 2014-07-05

fuck the cops trying to pull me over, I KNOW I wasn't speeding, so since I'm right, I'm gonna gun it through this school zone, because fuck the police!

Azmo23 - 2014-07-05

haha solro must be a scarecrow cause all his comments are about strawmen

SolRo - 2014-07-05

think some of you armchair social justice warriors cant tell the difference between civil disobedience (refusing to show your ID) and anarchy (refusing to be arrested, refusing to use the courts).

really, just start yelling 'I AM THE NATURAL BORN MAN!'

memedumpster - 2014-07-05

From the SolRo Dictionary.
Anarchy : verb. The act of refusing to be arrested for being an uppity nigger.

You need to calm down, sir, if you continue posting with your emotions myself and Officer EvilHomer will have to restrain you with carbon nanotubes until such time as you demonstrate a lack of logical fallacy.

Now, I'm writing out this ticket for false equivalency, but I don't have to sign it and turn it in, sir, unless you feel that is necessary? Do you, sir, feel that is necessary?

SolRo - 2014-07-05

So how long do you think she would have been in custody if she peacefully let herself "be arrested for being an uppity nigger"? Is that a law on in Arizona? Or are you just turning this into a 100% racial only issue?

Were these cops arresting uppity niggers for years until this one brave woman decided enough is enough?

Also I'd like to know how many of you laughed at videos of crazy sovereign citizens getting roughed up in similar situations for refusing to show ID

memedumpster - 2014-07-05

I don't know if it was all racial, it could have also been because she was a woman, and an academic type. Also, Arizona. Maybe the one cop is a heroin addict, and the partner has been covering, but the stress is tearing them apart and tonight they just had a big fight and... no, wait, that was Starsky and Hutch.

This is the problem, you can't know what the fuck they're really doing, and are less likely to know why the fuck they did it. This is unacceptable for absolute power. There needs to be more oversight so it isn't videos like this that move us to think about the issue.

I never want anyone to get hurt, it's the way cops reserve the right to anarchy someone up whenever they like that I find infuriating, and how little is actually done to address the issue.

So pardon me, THE KING IS A FINK.

I still like you though, fellow anticarbonite.

EvilHomer - 2014-07-05

I think he just wanted to slam her on his hood... IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-07-05

She's a Natural Woman.

millerman13 - 2014-07-06

Apparently ASU has received 11 complaints against its officers in 2014. Do you really think this is a one-off incident?

Gmork - 2014-07-06

You're a dumbass, homer.

Nominal - 2014-07-06

Being a criminal for not carrying around government ID at all times isn't a cause for national discourse?

wtf, poetv

SolRo - 2014-07-06

it has been like that for a long time.

question is why you only started caring after it effected a middle-class educated woman.

SolRo - 2014-07-06

millerman13;

it's ASU. how many of those complaints are about keggers getting shut down, despite the complainer telling the cops his dad owns a dealership, multiple times.

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-07-06

I suppose ignorance of these laws is a cause for discussion. There certainly are quite a few of them now. As Sol sez, they are not new either.

As much as I loathe the cat, John McAfee wrote a delightful little essay on Slashdot concerning how to negotiate with the police. Do look for it and have a read, it's a wealth of information about policing practices around the world and how to avoid rookie errors and prison. His advice is good because the fucker should be in jail for a million years right now and he's still running around pissing people off.

SolRo - 2014-07-06

These ID laws usually have a requirement of the person in question having first broken a law or statute or regulation or whatever. Meaning cops cant just randomly arrest people for not showing ID (they can, however, still ask for ID, and if you volunteer to show it, they have done nothing wrong).

And most of you whiney fuckers are fine with this law when it's used against dangerous looking homeless, black men, Hispanics, drunks, teabaggers etc.

Thing is, the law applies to you too.

That's how laws and society work.

memedumpster - 2014-07-05

Oh, it's Arizona. She was harassed for NOT being a part of a million person army charged with cleansing the white filth from Arizona.

Stop making that mistake, people.

Azmo23 - 2014-07-05

papers, please

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-07-05

I carry a pack of Rizla rolling papers in my wallet for just such occasions.
