HOW DARE YOU

kingarthur - 2014-06-24

I think given the description from the video more than one to all of our trolls frequent there. I dunno, I've never been to Reddit.

EvilHomer - 2014-06-24

I don't know about anyone else, but to me, Reddit feels more like Usenet; a confusing, poorly-formatted mass of nerds and jailbait pics. There's some corners of Reddit that operate like 4chan, or perhaps more accurately, like a weird hybrid between 4chan and your standard Youtube Cewebrity's channel, you know, the kind whose fanbase can think of nothing else to say other than "X sent me here!" But us? Hardly.

The only thing we have in common is the fedoras.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-06-24

You now, a fedora used to be a really handsome hat, and it really is a shame that they're suddenly not cool any more.

On the plus side, maybe I can go back to wearing a beret.

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-06-24

Aaaaw, wook at the widdle cewebrity!

Hooker - 2014-06-24

Yeah, the people that act like Reddit is the terrible thing that has _changed_ the way the Internet works are baffling. Reddit is newsgroups. Newsgroups have been around since the 90s. The things that happen on newsgroups, in order, are:

- The distribution of child pornography
- The distribution of pirated software
- Extreme, white-knuckle screaming matches
- The distribution of non-child pornography
- The distribution of stolen credit card numbers
- Exchange of new ideas among users

The only real differences between Reddit and newsgroups are that newsgroups are completely unmoderated no matter what period, Reddit is easier to use, and Reddit has less child pornography.

EvilHomer - 2014-06-24

Hooker- I think a large portion of Reddit users are too young to remember newsgroups, so that may partially account for why so many people act like it's something new and revolutionary. As for why some Redditors over the age of twenty-five also make this mistake, I can offer no explanation.

Waugh - 2014-06-23

at least you're not literally hitler or something

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-06-23

Well, this is actually very helpful!

The New Meat - 2014-06-24

I once met a person who had a t-shirt with a My Little Pony character who was apparently supposed to be the anthropomorphization of Reddit. In the context of this video, that shirt now makes sense.

EvilHomer - 2014-06-24

That would be Karma the Reddit Pony.

The New Meat - 2014-06-24

Ugh, yeah, it's all coming back to me now.

memedumpster - 2014-06-24

It doesn't sound like the website's fault, just the fact that greater than one or two humans doing anything is automatically the worst thing possible.

Adham Nu'man - 2014-06-24

The Genius of the Crowd

chumbucket - 2014-06-24

"like reading the daily newspaper"

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2014-06-24

It is.

Except it's one of those freebie newspapers with weird shit past the center fold, and it apparently originated in a Lovecraftian universe where the farther you read, the stranger and more unsettling (or enticing, depending on the reader) the articles get. The ink flows on its own, forming wonders and horrors you never knew possible, seeing under the smiling face of humanity at the primordial ooze that lies beneath.

Some know to stay on the front pages. Others find themselves drawn to the chaotic madness deeper within...

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-06-24

It disturbs me that reddit has no editors. Editing is what the Internet needs. We should all think of ourselves as editors of our youtube channels. People get mad if you delete their vile trolling. Well, I think we should start demanding it of the sites we visit.

Editing: We all need a lot more of it.

I haven't spent much time at Reddit because I found it incomprehensible. Now I shall avoid it out of principle.

EvilHomer - 2014-06-24

Editing is the last thing the Internet needs. What makes the Internet so awesome is that it's the world's most open and radically liberal marketplace of ideas, a global stream-of-consciousness network almost entirely unfettered by Victorian social constructs like shame, piety, or decency. Whenever editing is introduced into the system, that is, whenever discourse is channeled into a bottleneck and allowed to be controlled by a singular, authoritative voice, the system cannot help but break down into as many petty tyrannies as there are edited channels. One need not support trolling, to see that hugboxing and echo-chambering are not good alternatives.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-06-24

The belief, widely held, that it's a kind of tyranny to hold you to any standard when you post on my site is the pettiest of petty tyranny. The right to edit
your own publication is the essence of freedom of the press.

http://youtu.be/hh3YzzHw9P4

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-06-24

Absolutely, John!

Say, you should edit this site. I'm, sure it would be greatly improved, getting rid of all of us Assholes. Then it would be perfect. But for one tiny problem....

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-06-24

>>But for one tiny problem....

I don't have a brain. (lifts hat to show Dorothy) only straw...

This isn't even a good strawman. The reason why I don't control this site is chet owns the site and runs it the way he likes.

If I was running this site, getting rid of everyone isn't what i would do. That would suck. I think I'd bring back POE-NEWS.

But no, I wouldn't want the job.

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-06-24

It's a common delusion of newb admins. "I hate wading though all the crap on this site. If I build my own site, it would be much better. Edit out all the garbage comments. etc etc".

Pretty soon, they're alone. There are several reasons for this, that flow from the decision to edit. Need I lay them out?

Intentionally missing my point doesn't win your argument. Just makes you look weak. Yes, we know you don't own this site, John. That is why we are all still here.

CrazyBlueRocket - 2014-06-24

"I shit from here"

Adham Nu'man - 2014-06-24

Chet is dead. Long Live the Chet.

EvilHomer - 2014-06-24

John - we've been over this before. No-one has ever disputed your legal or constitutional right to exercise editorial control on the internet, at least when such editorial privileges are granted to you under the website's terms of service. Need I remind you that, just a few days ago, you were raising hell because you thought Sarkeesian critics were unfairly jumping the gun and claiming that she supported some legalistic approach to enforcing her position...? No, don't be silly. The problem is simply that editorial censorship is not good policy. Individual editors may have the constitutional right to discriminate against dissident voices, but that does not make it a good idea, nor does it give them the moral right to do so, any more than businesses, like white-owned diners, have the moral right to discriminate.

If anyone is trying to use state aggression to force you to stop blocking comments on your Youtube channel, then I'll stand with you, Mr Holmes! You and I, backs to the wall, sabers in hand. But just because I recognize your right to utilize the editorial privileges granted to you by Ma Google, that does not mean I want you to actually use them, and it most certainly does not mean that the internet as a whole should be subject to tighter editorial control.

Be like Sulla, John; hold your power in your hands, then discard it.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-06-24

>>Intentionally missing my point doesn't win your argument. Just makes you look weak. Yes, we know you don't own this site, John. That is why we are all still here.

Actually, I'm intentionally missing the entire argument. I made a very general point about editing, and you're trotting out crazy hypothetical scenarios. Are you saying that I'd be a bad editor of this site? Do you think I was saying that I would be a good editor? I didn't really think about it before, but it seems quite possible that I would be very bad.

I was actually think of OTHER editors who where successful at editing OTHER sites, and not whatever the hell it is that you were talking about.

>>Pretty soon, they're alone. There are several reasons for this, that flow from the decision to edit. Need I lay them out?

If you did, I would consider it to be very amusing.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-06-24

The problem is simply that editorial censorship is not good policy. Individual editors may have the constitutional right to discriminate against dissident voices, but that does not make it a good idea, nor does it give them the moral right to do so, any more than businesses, like white-owned diners, have the moral right to discriminate.

Why is it that I say "edit", and you hear "discriminate against dissident voices"? An editor who eliminates different points of view is generally the worst kind of editor. But that'sjust my opinion. It's making my point for me that I talk about something so simple, something was part of all publications for centuries, and you're spinning out crazy scenarios of me taking over this site, deleting everyone who disagrees with me, and what the fuck

I could tell you what my ideas of editorial standards are, but that's not the point. Everybody is allowed to have their own standards. And we would have STANDARDS.

OKAY, I delete comments from my youtube pages if they are 1) too stupid to reply to 2) too obnoxious to ignore. That comes down to maybe 1 post a year. When I say "too stupid to reply to" I'm not talking about "a dissenting point of view."

A place with a dumb heavy handed oppresive editor is not a place you want to contribute to. Lucky there are two billion other websites in the world.

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-06-24

John, you remind me of the life sciences people talking about junk DNA. I like to ask them, "well if it's junk can we just remove it and have more efficient DNA" and there's a lot of hemming and hawing because well the stuff _does_ seem to be doing something. And when you take it out, it doesn't work anymore.

As so with trolls and frauds and every other kind of noxious weed that grows in the garden here. You edit that stuff out, and suddenly the halls go quiet and the lights go out.

For example. You've probably rage quit this site 3 or 4 times by now, right? Yet, like a moth to the flame, you return to us. Why?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-06-24

See, this is what I mean. You're having an argument with me that I'm not participating in, and the reaon for that is that I don't agree with with the posiition I seem to be taking in this argument.

At this time I can't think of a single thing that anyone has posted in this site that I would delete if I could. Is that clear enough for you?

Please. Try to confine your responses to the words I use, and what the words mean.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-06-24

This is site is basically what it's supposed to be. You know, I think there's less genujine racism ion POE than anyplace else I've ever been on the internet..

I remember someone in POE-NEWS once said that they hated me so much that they wanted to cut open my mother and replace her womb with a rotten colostomy bag. Whoever it was that said that, it was kind of elegant. I can't really do it justice. Now some places, that would probably be inappropriate.

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-06-24

Perhaps John, we just don't understand each other. It happens.

You must remember this,
a piss is just a piss,
it's only coz I'm high.

The fundamental things we know,
at Poe T.Veeeeeeeee

Hooker - 2014-06-24

China has editors for the Internet.

Hooker - 2014-06-24

Meant to be a reply to JHM.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-06-24

When the government controls your website, that's called censorship. Editing is when you control your own website.

EvilHomer - 2014-06-24

When you use your editorial powers to suppress dissenting viewpoints, that's censorship. It's not *as bad* as state sponsored censorship, since you do not claim dominion over all online traffic, and visits to your own petty Potemkin e-village are done on a strictly voluntary basis. But there's a big difference between simple editing - fixing grammar, adding commentaries to texts, and truncating tl;dr to accommodate the needs of physical printing - and the flat-out burning of any heretical writings that happen to ruffle the feathers of Magistrate Felix of La Villa de Holmes.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-06-24

Yes. Maybe we understand each other after all.

Gmork - 2014-06-24

This video is pretty much what I expected. It's why I haven't bothered going to 4chan or reddit or anything similar. Ever.

Oh, I've been linked there once or twice, but every time I read more than a few posts I lose more faith in humanity, so I avoid it.

magnesium - 2014-06-24

Reddit is just Youtube comments with better spelling.

And a little less illuminati/chemtrail conspiracy, a little more stormfront/white people genocide conspiracy.

RockBolt - 2014-06-24

I browse photos and gifs on the reddit mobile app (with a few dozen subreddits blocked, natch) but that's about it, so I blithely miss essentially everything in this video. Reddit in my universe is mostly landscape photography and pictures of cats.

RockBolt - 2014-06-24

Also r/polandball, I fucking love polandball

Sudan no1 - 2014-06-24

That's pretty much the point of the video, as long as you learn to ignore the crap (which is unfortunately all over the "default" subreddits) it can be tolerable.

Spaceman Africa - 2014-06-24

Reddit isn't really a hivemind. Of course it leans white, male and to 13-20 year olds but there's still probably a subreddit out there for pretty much anything.

PegLegPete - 2014-06-24

I've been badgered to make a reddit account in the past. This video finally made me do it, and thankfully gave the incredibly great advice of unsubscribing many, many subreddits I don't care about. Let's hope I use it. And since I think its fashionable - and appropriate - to make fun of reddit, I'll add: Any website that calls itself the "front page of the internet" is a butt-fucking circle-jerk.

Adham Nu'man - 2014-06-24

POETV: The Poop Chute of the Internet

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-06-24

EDITING: We need a whole lot more of it.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-06-24

Before this video slides off the front page forever, I'll give an example of editing gone good.

When I started u\sing Linux in late 2002, I found a site called LinuxNewbie.org. I liked it, but the general discussion forum was crazy with political arguments and flame wars. People think that Linux users are hippies and liberals, but we have a rather large sub-community of Ron Paul fans and second amendment enthusiasts. Of all the major operating systems, Linux has the best-armed user base, I promise you.

In early 2003. they changed the format. The site became justlinux.com, there was no general discussion forum, and if you went off topic, they deleted it. And that worked well, because the Iraq war started maybe a mionth later, and all of a sudden, just linux became the only place on the internet where you wouldn't get into a horrible political flame war. It was just a rare plaace of sanity. And I learned Linux.

It's pretty much dead now. Other sites took the new users, but it's still got a great IRC chat.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-06-24

I think that part of respect for editing is learning, how to di\o it well, and part of that is notbeing heavy handed, and being respectful.

Eduitring isn't is NOT censorship, and when editing is overly aggressive and doesn't respect writers opinion,, that not censorship, that's bad editing.

You know, it never occurred to me before. Remarkably little racism for someplace that I've been coming for ten years. You gotta respect that.
