How much do they cost to buy per panel? I've seen a lot of different but all impossibly expensive numbers thrown around but I am looking for more concrete stats. Are they really "green" when you factor in manufacturing pollution and such?
Not saying this isn't going to happen albeit in some trimmed down form. Just saying people tend to get carried away with stuff like this and nerds blasting cum-fondues over unproven technology and concepts with clear flaws pisses me off.

Hell, even if we just used these things for parking lots and the shoulders of the interstates it could help a lot.
I hope I live to see a day when we don't have to worry about energy sources and can worry about the quickly depleting supply of rare earth minerals that threatens the technologies that allow us to generate and use energy.

Not quite! There's enough REM's off the coast of Hawaii in the mud below the sea to last four centuries. That's just in a tiny plot of ocean floor.
Idaho and parts of Montana also have tons of REMs in remote mountain reserves, but it would be environmentally devastating and expensive to get to them. I'd rather go the ocean floor filtering method.

If it were practical, it'd already be done at a small scale, there's already a functioning energy grid, so it's not as if you can't just solar on your roof.
Said roof solar only makes sense for the private sector when a lot of the up front costs are subsidized by state government. So, if we all agree that in the long run not having lots of solar in place is going to fuck us over, then let's have more of those subsidies.
Obviously a mutli-trillion dollar solar rollout would take care of much of our energy needs, everyone knows that already except the people giving and attending Ted talks. But hey, once we're able to build solar panels out of tweets, this thing will take off like gangbusters.
