Big Government will blow them up and them make all the children smoke tabacci and then aliens come and populate us with moar Lizard mens and then crab people rise from the seas and I just don't know. WE CAN'T HAVE GOOD THINGS!

memedumpster - 2014-05-24

Imagine the words "drunk asshole" lighting up around a car as they go down the highway.

Imagine the same with "texting fuckwit" and then it also shows their text message.

Imagine the alien assassins it would take to weaken the oil companies enough to let this happen, because government will be worthless to hostile towards this.

oddeye - 2014-05-24

How much do they cost to buy per panel? I've seen a lot of different but all impossibly expensive numbers thrown around but I am looking for more concrete stats. Are they really "green" when you factor in manufacturing pollution and such?

Not saying this isn't going to happen albeit in some trimmed down form. Just saying people tend to get carried away with stuff like this and nerds blasting cum-fondues over unproven technology and concepts with clear flaws pisses me off.

SolRo - 2014-05-24

solar panels are net green.

the cost for even the most ambitious pie-in-the-sky green projects max out at less than overthrowing a dirt farming country in the middle east.

oddeye - 2014-05-25

2010 the cost was placed, by the company themselves, at k a panel. That puts the cost of replacing the roads in the USA alone at ~ TRILLION.

Old_Zircon - 2014-05-25

But they also said, in the last thing I read (also around 2010) that current US energy needs could be met by replacing only around 5% of the surface of existing roadways. Hell, even if we just used these things for parking lots and the shoulders of the interstates it could help a lot.

I hope I live to see a day when we don't have to worry about energy sources and can worry about the quickly depleting supply of rare earth minerals that threatens the technologies that allow us to generate and use energy.

Old_Zircon - 2014-05-25

Apparently they've scaled back that estimate considerably.

oddeye - 2014-05-25

I'm just saying dude, it's prudent to wait for some real figures and plans before you fuck a horse over it, as tempting as that runaway train of ecstasy is.

memedumpster - 2014-05-25

Obviously, lots of Congolese slaves will have to die in the mines for this, but 10k a panel screams SCAM from the top of the mountains. That thing would have to be a top of the line gaming computer wrapped in silver.

"I hope I live to see a day when we don't have to worry about energy sources and can worry about the quickly depleting supply of rare earth minerals that threatens the technologies that allow us to generate and use energy."

Not quite! There's enough REM's off the coast of Hawaii in the mud below the sea to last four centuries. That's just in a tiny plot of ocean floor.

Idaho and parts of Montana also have tons of REMs in remote mountain reserves, but it would be environmentally devastating and expensive to get to them. I'd rather go the ocean floor filtering method.

How did interlocking hexagons become the official pattern of the future?

memedumpster - 2014-05-24

Battletech.

SolRo - 2014-05-24

hexagons? 6 sides? 666? WAKE UP SHEEPLE!

SolRo - 2014-05-24

if only it were made of a 3 foot layer of glass spheres, then baleen would approve.

American Standard - 2014-05-25

This really does sound too good to be true. The marketing in the video makes me pretty excited about it, but that's its job.

Anyone with the requisite science education or energy technology experience/know-how wanna weigh in on the feasibility of this?

oddeye - 2014-05-25

The upfront costs are too high for a general rollout anytime soon.

EvilHomer - 2014-05-25

While it does sound too good to be true, the marketing in this video does not make me excited. It makes me angry and punchy. WHACKY CASUAL QUICKCUT JOKE GUY is one of my least favorite marketing gimmicks, and using him for something like this makes me even more skeptical and cynical.

RockBolt - 2014-05-25

Cue the aggregates lobby purchasing enough congressmen to outlaw this in 3, 2, 1...

pastorofmuppets - 2014-05-29

If it were practical, it'd already be done at a small scale, there's already a functioning energy grid, so it's not as if you can't just solar on your roof.

Said roof solar only makes sense for the private sector when a lot of the up front costs are subsidized by state government. So, if we all agree that in the long run not having lots of solar in place is going to fuck us over, then let's have more of those subsidies.

Obviously a mutli-trillion dollar solar rollout would take care of much of our energy needs, everyone knows that already except the people giving and attending Ted talks. But hey, once we're able to build solar panels out of tweets, this thing will take off like gangbusters.
