Cue President Business showing up and saying, "Don't you mean... THE WARES OF TAHP-UR?"

animegurl1000 - 2014-05-03

Not that I'd ever buy them, but the Lego character designs in the cartoon look more Lego-like than the real ones that are on the market:

sasazuka - 2014-05-03

I presume that would be because it's a lot easier to animate a 2D texture "face" than it would have been to build all the heads in three dimensions and then deform them for each mouth shape, blink, and other facial movement.

Prickly Pete - 2014-05-03

Gosh, the look on Homer's face just exudes, "This sausage is going inside somebody".

Sexy Duck Cop - 2014-05-04

And Lisa's face says "That somebody is me."

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2014-05-03

I am so confused as to why anyone would make this.

oddeye - 2014-05-03

Money?

dairyqueenlatifah - 2014-05-03

Because The Lego Movie is the highest grossing film of 2014 so far. and the lego video games are selling like hotcakes, and people are jumping on the bandwagon?

There's a huge resurgence of lego popularity at the moment.

EvilHomer - 2014-05-03

Yes, yes, money. *But how does this help the Illuminati?*

SolRo - 2014-05-03

more money

Cena_mark - 2014-05-03

Remember when the Simpsons were trend starters and not trend riders.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-05-03

Rod Steiger once wrote about a guy who asked about Arther Miller "What's he done lately.", Steiger responded by saying "He wrote 'Death of a Salesman' and 'the Crucible', and you should kiss his ass for that.".

If the people who make the simpsons want to keep making it, i think they've earned that right, as long as Rupert wants to keep writing the checks. Hipsters hate the Simpsons because it's too old and mainstream to be cool for liking it, and too ironic to like ironically. It's still better than 90 per cent of TV, and I doubt that it's really to blame for the problems of Bob's Burgers, whatever the hell THAT is.

EvilHomer - 2014-05-04

"Hipsters hate the Simpsons..."

This is the second time you've said that, Mr Holmes, and now I'm going to have to ask you to cite your sources. As discussed before, hipsters do not *hate* the Simpsons; the almost universal attitude is one of disappointment and resignation, not hate.

Bob's Burgers is the new Simpsons. It's a great show show, extremely funny, and strikes that golden balance between raunchiness and positivity that we really haven't seen since Homer stopped acting like Homer and started acting like Peter Griffin. If you haven't watched it yet, I'd heartily recommend you check out the first few episodes. I think you'll really enjoy the show.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-05-04

For purposes of this discussion, I consider a "hipster" to be someone who hates something because it's become established and mainstream, so I think
the argument is mostly enclosed in the definition.. People on the internet are ALWAYS complaining about the simpsons, and I think it's still okay, it's just not as good as it used to be. I don't watch it very often. I don't have a TV; I have hulu plus, and there's always 150 other things I could be watching. Usually, I watch YouTube. But when I see the simpsons, i don't see any reason to complain. It's above average TV.

Since I can't read anybody's mind over the internet, theres necessarily a certain amount of assumption tied up in my way of explaining this to myself. I can't prove it. Maybe people simply enjoy complaining about the Simpsons. Personally, I enjoy complaining about hipsters.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-05-04

As long as it's McFarland-free, I'll try to check out Bob's Burgers.

I've been watching the dearly departed "Ugly Americans" on Hulu Plus. It gets repetitive if you binge, but I can live with that.

Cena_mark - 2014-05-04

Yes check out Bob's Burgers. Its almost as good as MLP:FIM!

Riskbreaker - 2014-05-04

Simpsons today is a horrible show, is not better than 90% of nothing. We some keep telling themselves that lie is beyond me. Is about as bad as an episode of the Big Bang Theory. Face the truth already.

EvilHomer - 2014-05-04

Complaining about something doesn't mean you hate it, it just means that there are things you don't like about it. I complain about Twilight Sparkle, but I don't hate her.

And I don't think people dislike the Simpsons because they're mainstream and popular; I've yet to meet anyone who argues this! Whenever someone complains about the Simpsons, they say it's because the show's quality has plummeted and it's just not that entertaining anymore (although, as I've said, I do think the last season or two has seen a slight improvement in quality).

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-05-04

No one ever actually SAYS that they hate something barbecue it's mainstream and popular, that would be to tantamount to admitting you're a poser, but check out Riskbreaker's comment:

>>Simpsons today is a horrible show, is not better than 90% of nothing. We some keep telling themselves that lie is beyond me. Is about as bad as an episode of the Big Bang Theory. Face the truth already.

Like I say, I can't read people's minds, but this looks like classic hipster to me.

He condemns it forcefully without giving a reason, establishes his intellectual superiority by portraying me as delusional, and takes a gratuitous, way out of left field shot at another popular mainstream show.

I don't know riskbreaker. He may not be a hipster. He may even be a woman. But that's how riskbreaker comes off, in my opinion.

EvilHomer - 2014-05-04

I think you're grasping at hipsters here, Mr Holmes. He says it's a horrible show that is about as bad The Big Bang Theory (which is wrong and totally uncalled for, but whatever).

If he were motivated by pure hipsterism, I believe Mr Breaker would have said something like, "omg Simpsons is such mainstream crap, you all watch it because it's trendy, you SHEEP".

EvilHomer - 2014-05-04

And what's wrong with barbecues?

infinite zest - 2014-05-04

I just think it's weird that at this point all the writers are ostensibly people like me in their 30s, who probably grew up with what we consider the "Golden Age." A lot of people say that the beginning of the decline is the one where Maude dies, but if you think about it, those writers were fairly new and didn't have much to work with, most likely growing up on 70s and 80s sitcoms, and if it was animated, probably Scooby Doo. A "let's kill off a character to make things more interesting and not in a Dallas-esque cliffhanger way like we did a few seasons ago" idea not only seems inevitable, but completely plausible. Ned becomes more than annoying neighbor, Skinner and Edna develop a relationship, things like that.

The Simpsons used to be good at poking fun of conversations like this (alt.nerd.obsessive?) and now it's just like "We don't really care. People like Legos. Make a Lego episode. People like Tatum Channing. Fit him in somehow. I know. Homer gets jealous of Tatum Channing. Cut to Matrix parody where Homer learns Jujitsu."

If the Simpsons writers were smart and wanted to keep their original fanbase going, they'd do what Roger Meyers Jr. told Bart and Lisa years ago: make your own. The 24 (or however many episodes are in a season now) could be reviewed and the winners produced.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2014-05-04

There are about 1 or 2 episodes per season that actually blow you away with how genuinely good they are, and this is because of The Simpson's age, not in spite of it. You can tell a handful of writers grew up with the show and have some really ambitious stories they've always wanted to tell.

The rest is indefensible crap, however. Not just ompared to the old series; the storytelling is arbitrary, sloppily paced, and strung together by random strings of unrelated events and characters, inevitably resolving the central problem by having celrbrity guest stars appear in the last two minutes to HILARIOUSLY start a brawl that solves everything.

Riskbreaker - 2014-05-04

The show is terrible because the writting is terrible, is not funny, as simple as that.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2014-05-04

After reading episode synopsis from recent seasons all I can do is shake my head. Apparently there is an episode where Marge takes steroids and rapes Homer. The writers of this show are fucking untalented. If they had the guts to hire actually funny people like Mike Reiss and Conan O'Brien, they might have been able to bring it back but they just kept the same horrible writers because the ratings haven't dipped severely enough. So why bother? Ugh.

EvilHomer - 2014-05-04

"I just think it's weird that at this point all the writers are ostensibly people like me in their 30s, who probably grew up with what we consider the "Golden Age.""

That's my theory as to why the quality has started to go up a bit in recent years. I'd assume that most of the fresh new writers grew up with the Simpsons, and understand what makes the show "work". Hopefully, the "Scooby Doo" generation will be phased out and allow the Simpsons generation to assume more of the creative burden.

memedumpster - 2014-05-04

The last season of Futurama was pretty good, and reminded me a lot of the first four seasons.

Sorry, I haven't watched Simpsons in too long to know any of this. I did notice when watching the Itchy and Scratchy compilation that right about when the SImpsons got an HDTV, all Itchy and Scratchy became movie spoofs, which were quite boring.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-05-03

I should just avoid these Simpsons clips. It's hard to think that I used to happily tell people that it was my favorite show in the mid-90s.

SolRo - 2014-05-03

back in my day, the cops in The Simpsons would have been too incompetent to build the helicopter in the first place, much less put it back together at a later date.

sasazuka - 2014-05-03

I'm just dreading that the Lego gimmick will not only earn this episode a primetime Emmy nomination but will also make it win over a more deserving animated half-hour like BOB'S BURGERS "The Kids Rob a Train" (probably the episode I'd submit if I was the BOB'S BURGERS producers or Fox or whomever it is that chooses episodes to submit).

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2014-05-04

Archer or Rick and Morty would also be better choices. I can't believe how many shitty Simpsons episodes have won Emmys (I just checked).

RockBolt - 2014-05-04

They get two paychecks this way

BillLumbergh - 2014-05-04

who gives a shit

EvilHomer - 2014-05-04

Not Bill Lumbergh!

infinite zest - 2014-05-04

Lumbergh fucked her

TeenerTot - 2014-05-04

If there are actual Lego Simpsons, what does it mean for my set of Blocko Simpsons?

infinite zest - 2014-05-04

Oh interesting. I was about to correct you and say Duplo, but yeah! That was a Simpsons brand. How weird. I guess they've had lots of stuff in real-life before; not sure if there's a Malibu Stacy doll but there's definitely Duff Beer, a series of Moes, but in all those cases, like Blockos, they seem to stay within the Simpsons lexicon. I didn't try Buzz Cola when it was available, and I'm assuming it tasted like Jolt or Pepsi, but I don't think Jolt or Pepsi would make a Simpsons flavor.

Bart's fine with telling people to not lay a finger on his butterfinger, and the whole family likes CC Lemon, I think Fanta too, but this might be a first. Unless the line is Lego presents Blockos.

BiggerJ - 2014-05-04

I call this the parody paradox. They mention the real thing, but when they need to feature it to a lawyerable degree, they need to come up with a parody anyway. Raffi and Roofi coexist. Oprah and Opal coexist. Even Sam and Max has Stuckey's and Snuckey's. Snuckey's may have pecan-flavored candies to match Stuckey's' candied pecans, but only Stuckey's has the legend of Auntie Alice, the Hateful Thing.

infinite zest - 2014-05-04

I'll be honest, with the exception of the Spirit Journey animation (in one of my favorite episodes) I've never really liked it when the Simpsons go into a different style. Even the 3D homer one felt kind of forced to me, and was definitely the weakest link, but I can't really complain about a Treehouse of Horror bit, especially when the other two were great.

I've mentioned it before, but I should see the Lego movie as I guess my band's on the soundtrack, but I haven't gotten around to it. I only played Lego Star Wars for PS2 and liked its sense of humor. You can't die and everything explodes in a way that's as satisfying as kicking over your older brother's Lego masterpiece without having to go into protective custody for a week. But the movie? The trailer just makes it look like a big ol' Lego commercial (duh) with some jokes, most of them witty pop culture references the quality of Scary Movie.

The "but with Legos" doesn't really sell it for me. It's like if I said "I don't like cartoons/kids movies" and refused to see Wall-E, so maybe I'm wrong. This just seems like the usual Simpsons quality of humor (still not atrocious, just not what I grew up with) but "with Legos." There's also some show on Cartoon Network about some Samurai, Ninja? I dunno I caught a commercial for while watching an Adventure Time marathon and as far as I can tell, it has nothing to do with Legos except for the fact that, well it's got CGI Legos running around doing Matrix-style fight sequences.

The point of Legos, at least for me, was either follow the useless instructions and build the Millennium Falcon, or just go to town and build your own thing. In either case, it was hands-on, and it was your own. A while entertainment franchise based off little heads and faces I remember best as getting stuck in my nose isn't really that appealing to me.

oddeye - 2014-05-04

Fucking hell kids....

Spaceman Africa - 2014-05-04

This whole episode may be a good summary of the "zombie Simpsons", but that joke was kinda funny.

sasazuka - 2014-05-04

In all honesty, it was a pretty good episode, by modern SIMPSONS standards, but I'm about 50/50 on modern SIMPSONS anyway (50 percent of new episodes are entertaining enough, 50 percent are terrible).

I thought it was just going to be a blatant cross-promotion for the new SIMPSONS Lego stuff (even if the final real-world Lego designs were different from what was shown in this episode), but I do like the way they framed the Lego world as being a product of Homer's subconscious not wanting Lisa to grow up. It had more of a story than I was anticipating, not nearly on the level of classic SIMPSONS but not terrible (i.e. "Saddlesore Galactica") either.
