Just wanted to mention, that's Don Rosa doing the artwork for the cover of the album. Don Rosa did the original "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" comic that inspired the album.

bongoprophet - 2014-02-27

Don Rosa is huge in Scandinavia so this is pretty much a perfect match, he really reinvented Carl Bark's character.

Bort - 2014-02-27

Yep, I'm glad Don Rosa was there to soften Scrooge up a little. Here's what Carl Barks had to say once:

"I've always looked at the ducks as caricatured human beings. In rereading the stories, I realized that I had gotten kind of deep in some of them: there was philosophy in there that I hadn't realized I was putting in. It was an added feature that went along with the stories. I think a lot of the philosophy in my stories is conservative - conservative in the sense that I feel our civilization peaked around 1910. Since then we've been going downhill. Much of the older culture had basic qualities that the new stuff we keep hatching can never match. Look at the magnificent cathedrals and palaces that were built. Nobody can build that sort of thing nowadays. Also, I believe that we should preserve many old ideals and methods of working: honor, honesty, allowing other people to believe in their own ideas, not trying to force everyone into one form. The thing I have against the present political system is that it tries to make everybody exactly alike. We should have a million different patterns. They say that wealthy people like the Vanderbilts and Rockefellers are sinful because they accumulated fortunes by exploiting the poor. I feel that everybody should be able to rise as high as they can or want to, provided they don't kill anybody or actually oppress other people on the way up. A little exploitation is something you come by in nature. We see it in the pecking order of animals—everybody has to be exploited or to exploit someone else to a certain extent. I don't resent those things."

Carl Barks thought society peaked when he turned 9, same as just about everyone else.

Old_Zircon - 2014-02-28

Carl Barks thought the Vanderbilts and Rockefellers didn't "kill anybody or actually oppress other people on the way up."

Also, unironically referring to "pecking order" outside of a few very species-specific research contexts is a good red flag for someone being completely full of shit and safe to disregard the opinions of.

Yes. I like that later takes on Scrooge McDuck (such as Rosa's) keep him greedy, but 1) his greed isn't held as a virtue, and 2) the monetary wealth is a little less important to him than reaching that next rainbow.

That's kind of what I like about this video: the music isn't exactly my style, but then you've got Don Rosa doing the thing he loves, and musicians practicing an art they value, all celebrating a character who was all about filling life with deeds and memories.

EvilHomer - 2014-02-27

OF COURSE it's Tuomas! A very nice fellow and a great composer, but also one of the biggest queerbag dorks in metal. He makes Timmo from Stratovarius look like a varsity football quarterback.

For those of you who don't follow Nightwish, he's also a Disney fanatic.

EvilHomer - 2014-02-27

Well, Disney movies and themeparks and stuff. I guess Ducktales is part of the Disney empire, too, so it fits.

infinite zest - 2014-02-27

I only have one Nightwish song on my phone.. it's Ghost Love Score from End of an Era and it's a good bike song because it takes me the same time as the song to bike from my house to work. IN the rain and snow and shit. Pretty epic. The rest of the music I listen to just makes me want to quit my job.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-02-27

I liked it. It wasn't just a half-assed redo of the themesong or any song from the game, so that itself is worthy of stars.

EvilHomer - 2014-02-27

I would kill to see Tuomas and Floor do their own version of The Moon.

Cena_mark - 2014-02-27

This is awful. It sound like it should be on a Pure Moods CD.

EvilHomer - 2014-02-27

Well, you're wrong about it being awful, but I can't say you're wrong about the Pure Moods. See my comment above.

IIRC the man has gone on record saying he prefers chill New Age mood music to metal.

Cena_mark - 2014-02-27

I'm a musician and a music lover, my user name is a testament to that. I love a wide variety of music country, blues, hip hop, classical, rock, punk, but I'll never see the value in new age crap. It was just music created for housewives in the 90s there's no sense in bringing it back.

EvilHomer - 2014-02-27

I thought your username refered to how you marked for John Cena?

Cena_mark - 2014-02-27

My musical interests made me a Cena_mark. I was a WCW mark and I stopped watching wrestling for a while when it was bought by McMahon. Years later in 2005 I started watching wrestling again and I noticed one wrestler was also a rapper... like me! I hated Cena at first. I thought he was a poser, but I checked out his album and realized he was the real deal. I became a Cena mark ever since. He was the first wrestler who wasn't around during the Monday Night Wars that I liked.

EvilHomer - 2014-02-27

That's funny, because I hated (and continue to hate) Cena for the very same reason! Well, also for the fact that his stories are boring and he's a terrible technical wrestler, but in light of how he's such a genuinely nice guy, I think I could get over all that, if it just weren't for that whole retarded rapper gimmick. No offense.

He's like Scotty 2 Hotty, only he's trying way too hard.

It might be cool if he rebranded himself as a Yanni-style New Age pianist, though. He could dress in Fabio shirts, and decorate the ring with aromatherapy candles and handcrafted Native American crystal art before every match. The housewives would eat that shit up!

Old_Zircon - 2014-02-28

Symphonic metal is pretty much all awful, and I virtually never make categorical statements about entire styles of music like that. But so far I haven't ever heard anything to change my mind. I mean, its track record is even worse than pop-punk.

But it's pretty entertaining.

EvilHomer - 2014-02-28

Well that's unfortunate, OZ. But when you say "symphonic metal", what do you mean, precisely? "Symphonic metal" is one of those really broad terms that's used by different people to describe a whole range of bands, many of whom may be nothing alike. For example, I've heard the term used, in different contexts by different people, to describe Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Rhapsody, After Forever, Yngwie, The Gathering, and whatever choral-medieval bullshit Dark Symphonies is limping to the barn with lately, despite the fact that all of these bands are quite different, both in temperament and in style.

Still, Nightwish is pretty much the gold standard by which all other "symphonic" metal bands are measured, so if you don't fancy them, I'm probably not going to be able to change your mind. You're mostly into hippie prog stuff, right? You might like Opeth, Therion, or Ayreon (their Ambeon project is especially Nightwish-y), assuming you haven't heard them already and/or are willing to classify them as "symphonic".

(on a side note: symphonic pop-punk! Now there's an idea!)

Stopheles - 2014-02-27

I want a sludge metal concept album about hating Gladstone Gander, called THE ID OF DONALD DUCK.

Stopheles - 2014-02-27

Also, this album had BETTER not make my five-year-old a fucking Dream Theatre fan.

Old_Zircon - 2014-02-28

2014 is pretty promising so far.
