Always 5 for Svengoolie.

Kabbage - 2014-01-10

Svengoolie comes on right after reruns of the old Star Trek, over here. It's un-fucking-watchable.

It blew my mind to find out that there are fans of this god-awful show.

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-01-10

With Kab on this one.

sosage - 2014-01-10

Late night horror shows are what they are. No one wants to tread the MST3K/Rifftrax ground, because that requires a lot more work than their budget allows. So it's all Elvira/Creature Feature "funny stuff before and after the breaks" format.

The one that dares to fill the MST3K shoes will win.

I'm a CKMT man myself for when it is late Saturday night, I'm drunk, and at home...but Svengoolie is good for 5 from me.

Kabbage - 2014-01-10

It's just so, so crappy, though.

The best I can say about it is that maybe it helped pave the way for Elvira, who sort of led into MST3K a bit.

I don't even dislike Rich Koz that much. He seems really nice. I just think he's nightmarishly unfunny.

Programs such as this were part of my adolescence and my childhood. If you didn't grow up with a substantial amount of entertainment coming from late night public access cable, it's understandable that you would find this kind of thing unbearable. It's nostalgia and little else, at least for me.

Kabbage - 2014-01-10

Well I watched all of Stargate SG-1 when I was younger so I really cannot complain

kamlem - 2014-01-10

I'm Australian. We had Elvira in the 80's but that was about it. I just posted this as a silly song about a very silly film.

Old_Zircon - 2014-01-11

TV horror hosts are jsut something you like or you don't. I didn't grow up on any of them (unless you count MST3k and USA Up All Night, which I don't) but they work for me.

Anyhow, I was fortunate enough to trade for a copy of the Gandalf the Grey record recently and there's an endorsement form Zacherley: The Cool Ghoul on it. If you don't know Gandalf he's both Poe Red worthy and one of the first DIY home recording guys - he recorded the whole album alone in his bedroom on a single 2 track machine, playing all the instruments himself and overdubbing by bouncing from the left channel to the right and back while playing along. He's also a public access legend and is credited by some with inventing the infomercial.

I know that's a non-sequitur but I figured people who like Ghoulardi would appreciate Gandalf the Grey.

Old_Zircon - 2014-01-11

Oh, he was also the first musician to release a "video single" (previous music videos were promo films that weren't publicly circulated), beating Sony to the punch by something like 6 months.

Syd Midnight - 2014-01-11

Ernie Anderson's original Ghoulardi was one of the half dozen or so cool things to ever come from Cleveland

This was unspeakably cool in _1963_... it's a lot more difficult to pull off the same anti-authoritarian horror schlock schtick 25-50 years later without being formulaic.

Kabbage - 2014-01-12

Yeah, Ghoulardi looked like it was something real. I guess Svengoolie became popular after Ernie got fired and people were hoping for something similar.

Pillager - 2014-01-10

I grew up with Cobweb Theater & the Bowman Body. Svengoolie is way funnier.

Old_Zircon - 2014-01-11

I need to watch Ghoulies 2 again.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-01-14

you do! Phil Fondacaro!

My cousin made a fun fanvid for it set to I Love Saturdays by Erasure that's on youtube. It's so dumb, I love it.
