Attention men: women are interested in many things, but not your truck. I can't stress this fact enough. Have you actually looked inside other trucks to see who's riding shotgun? Right. I wouldn't fuck her with your dick, much less my own. Consider yourselves forewarned.

I heard a country song while masochistically tuning through the radio the other day. It was straight up an R Kelly song, just with a hick-ass accent and twangy guitar. Remove those, pure R Kelly quality lyrics and structure.

Let's not forget that good country music was released in 2013. Not pop-country music, good country music.

I'm down with that first link: but those converse all-stars sort of pull the mask off, huh?

infinite zest - 2013-12-31

The second link (as well as almost any Jason Isbell) is brilliant. Drive By Truckers always caused a rift between myself and my "Punk Rock" friends, because if you just hear it without listening to what they're saying, half the songs sound like these. But "Southern Rock Opera" will forever be one of my favorite records.

Only good country album of 2013, as far as I'm concerned:

Sons of Perdition released an album in 2013. They're worth checking out.

These, and BorrowedSolution's suggestion below may as well be a different genre. I don't just mean that because I like all of these and am pained by the music clips at the top.

They're not even playing the same sport as the musicians in the clips.

Raise this barn by Applejack was by far the greatest country song of 2013.

EvilHomer - 2014-01-01

I love Raise This Barn. I can't say it was my favorite song of Season 3, because come on, Babs Seed, but it's definitely the country song I listened to the most, and it would have been my choice for this thread. *Would* have been. UNFORTUNATELY, Apple Family Reunion originally aired on December 22, 2012, so unless country music has a car-industry-like standard of not syncing release years to actual years (and it might, for all I know!) then I'm afraid it's disqualified.

Also, is RTB *really* country? I'd consider it more bluegrass than country, but that might be because my impression of what constitutes "country" has been largely defined by over-produced trucks-n-football shit.

Grandmaster Funk - 2014-01-02

Bluegrass is considered a subtype of country music. The sense that it's somehow different is probably due to the proliferation hipsterish attitudes that praise "bluegrass" but revile "country."

That guy - 2014-01-04

What are my choices here? Hipsterish attitude vs liking whatever crap music is in the video?

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-12-31

As someone who worked at a country station during the whole "young country" thing, it's going to be hard for the genre to pull itself out of this. It's already stuck in some fairly rigid trappings (just by the name alone, "country") and I can't remember the last time anything new was brought into the genre that stuck, except for perhaps the version of Cottoneyed Joe by Rednexx.

It was telling that when the soundtrack to O Brother Where Art Thou was selling hand over fist, no mainstream country stations were playing any of the songs from the movie.

EvilHomer - 2013-12-31

I don't know much about country, but surely it can't be any worse now than it was during the Shania Years?

And what about Cowboy Troy; did he stick?

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-12-31

Well, the era where I was spinning the yee-haw hits featured "Achy Breaky Heart" and the dance mix of "Boot Scootin' Boogie."

I think I left the radio biz right before "Honkey Tonk Badonkadonk" came out.

^^ That is what country should be. Oh my fuck I love that song.

Seven Arts/H8 Red - 2013-12-31

Related: this piece about pop musicians "going country."
http://www.cbc.ca/news/arts/going-country-pop-musicians-find-s uccess-with-country-1.2477410

The piece - most of which focuses on Darius Rucker - assumes more pop musicians turn to country because of its sales viability. It's not like this is a new thing; it's the musical equivalent of Daniel Whitney becoming Larry the Cable Guy.

BorrowedSolution - 2014-01-01

Oh shit, people become hacks for money? I'd like to subscribe to your newsletter.

Seven Arts/H8 Red - 2014-01-01

The reason I mentioned the link is BECAUSE it's a 'no shit' story. Darius Rucker's been a popular country artist for half a decade, and this is somehow notable to at least one news organization now. I don't pretend that piece is anything more than best-of-2013 filler that can be knocked out the door before an office party.
