While I liked the episode, it just left what remained of continuity a complete mess.

And while I sympathize with the previous Doctor actors and their frustration over not being put into the show again, including them all in anything but bit roles like Tom Baker's was out of the question. Especially Colin Baker, who hasn't aged particularly well.

I don't know, maybe I read too many comic books, but I can tolerate a good retcon just fine. If it turns out the War Doctor isn't the monster we all assumed he was with endless blood on his hands, I'm okay with that.

I think I read that Eccleston flat-out didn't want to be part of "Doctor Who" any more, owing to miserable experiences in his season. I can respect that, but he did a terrific job and I wouldn't have minded seeing more of him.

I also wouldn't mind seeing some more Paul McGann, like, seasons worth. Didja ever catch this?

Oh, yes, I saw the McGann short. It was a nice callback to the Brain of Morbius.

I don't mind a retcon, either, it's just that's almost all Moffat does these days. I mean, did everything from 2005 onward get changed, not happen, or what?

Everything from 2005 seems to have happened; Moffat mentioned that neither Hurt nor Tennant would would have any memory of the timey-wimey events that saved Gallifrey, so presumably neither would any of their predecessors. As far as Hurt knows, he pushed the button and Gallifrey and the Daleks all got destroyed; Eccleston appeared in London almost immediately afterwards.

So will the Christmas special be about Matt Smith finding Gallifrey, or will that be Peter Capaldi's story arc? (My guess: it's no longer in the constellation of Kasterborous, it is hidden in the much less conspicuous constellation of Ralph.)

As to the return of Gallifrey, I had assumed it could only happen by the Doctor helping to start the Time Lords on their way -- so "his" Gallifrey would still be gone, but Gallifrey would nonetheless exist, at its beginning. I admit I am sufficiently enamored of that idea that Moffat's going to have to really impress me to make me happy they did things his way. I give it about five minutes.

Go back and watch some classic Doctor Who, specifically Tom Baker's run, and notice how openly tongue in cheek the show was. I think some fans buy into the melodrama a little too much, because the 50th special would've been morbid if we watched the Doctor really kill his whole race. Seriously, the hero of a 50 year long show that at times featured a clown as the lead celebrates its longevity with genocide??? They wrapped up a plotline, spun the dice on one facet of an outcome (planet is "gone" because it moved, not because it blew up) so the show could be a celebration.

Seriously, this is the show K-9 came from. It's for kids!! Enjoy it!

Yeah, there's a lot RTD did right, and I think he was "right" to have the Doctor be the last Time Lord, but putting the blood on his hands was a bit much.

It's like in comics where they've decided that it's not a "really good" comic until there is rape and dismemberment -- writers who think like that invariably put out a crappy story.
