Nearly 9 minutes of storytelling, and not a single word of dialog.

Beautiful.

That's my favorite thing about Samurai Jack. There are A LOT of things to love about Samurai Jack - I'd go so as to say it was the single best body of animation produced in the 00s - but the way Tartakovsky eschewed expository dialogue in favor of telling stories through art direction and music cues, was one of the show's biggest strengths.

My favorite part of the premiere movie (later episode 3) was the fight with the bug bots. No dialogue, no quips, no music - just a never ending sequence of Jack dishing out pain and taking it. Before that there was that beautiful scene of Jack planning out the assault with his talking dog friends. This show was practically flawless.

Yeah, the bug fight was what first convinced me Samurai Jack was going to be something really special. It's still one of my favorite scenes of any show ever.

"No. There is no escape."

Other standout moments include the Shadow Ninja fight, the entire twenty-minute long Island of the Blind Archers episode, Evil Jack, the Aku-stic Rave, X9; fuck, the whole show is great!

My personal favorite episode is the one where Aku is telling children fairy tales with himself as the Good Guy(Goldilocks for instance) and Jack as the Bad Guys(I believe he is all three of the Three Bears(Samurai)). It's a comedy episode and still delivers the fact that the kids know that Jack isn't the bad guy, and they start taking over story telling making Jack the Hero. I like the fact that the show had both comedy episodes and serious action episodes, and that both worked.

I've always loved the lack of outlines in the art-style. It provides A BEAUTIFUL CONTRAST BETWEEN ALL THE DIFFERENT COLORS HINT HINT.

So, can we talk about the complexities of stereotyping? You could look at just about any scene here and condemn it as racist -- that African tribesman sure looked like a caricature -- except that he wouldn't even be recognizable as an African tribesman if they removed the "racist" characteristics. Put him in Dockers and a polo shirt, lighten up his skin so he looks like George Hamilton, is that any better?

I'm left with the sense that there is nothing inherently racist or stereotypical in how you depict people; context is the deciding factor. That said, unless you're Sarah Silverman, do NOT wear blackface; it just won't go well.

A reminder that the entire series, whole episodes and clips, is available on youtube. Awww yeahhhh.

Great show. A modern classic.

Oh. Once Proxtube unlocked it so my countrymen could enjoy it, I had the option to pay to see it.

Pfft. I bought the pilot movie on DVD years ago. They have my money. I'll just torrent the bug ep.

Sorry, all.
