A bunch of Japanese people are flipping their shit over this movie right now, calling Miyazaki an anti-Japanese, left-wing propagandist, traitor to his nation because of it.
I have to see it.

Adham Nu'man - 2013-07-25 Why are they flipping out? What's so scandalous about it?

Cockmaster Flash - 2013-07-25 Miyazaki committed the mortal sin of saying that Japan should apologize to and compensate the comfort women.
Also, he thinks changing the constitution, especially repealing the antiwar clause, is a bad idea.

Cherry Pop Culture - 2013-07-25 Yeah! Fuck Miyazaki! How dare he want reparations to Koreans! To women! To Korean women! How dare he see injustice done in the past and want to see a difference and acknowledgement being made. Fuck him and all he stands for, that stupid motherfucker!

Aelric - 2013-07-26 True that. Koreans riot and weep over minor league baseball losses to teams with Japanese sponsorship. Japan has the "white pig go home" vans blasting purity propaganda down the Tokyo streets at 4 in the morning. Dokto, an island in contention since WW2 is enough to get Koreans murderously angry even if they don't quite get why. Japanese students tend to violently and mercilessly bully other students with any trace of Korean heritage to the approval of many teachers. They are the Israel and Palestine of Asia and they are both fucked up. They don't shoot rockets at each other, but they also refuse to act like grown up countries in regards to each other.

So, I don't know a lot about Japanese history: I know this guy designed the Zero planes, but since they were kind of used for an awful purpose, is there something about this guy why Miyazaki and crew would want to memorialize him? Is he sort of like a Japanese Oppenheimer figure where he did something technically interesting which was then exploited for bad and then he regretted it?

SolRo - 2013-07-26 engineers aren't military, they just make the best/safest machine with the resources and time they're given. how those machines are used is entirely up to the military.
also you have a bad case of seeing history from the victors viewpoint...zero fighters did awful things, but the American fighters and bombers that firebombed and then nuked over a million civilians to death are national treasures that get big cheers at airshows?

StanleyPain - 2013-07-26 Thanks for the lecture, strawman argument, and not answering what I asked.
