I used to be scared of televisions behaving inappropriately, like when they used to accidentally go off the air in the early 80s, or when the Emergency Broadcast Terror Sound came on.
At 2 or 3 in the morning, they used to go to a test pattern or the static from Poltergeist.

sasazuka - 2013-07-23 To be fair, as an adult I'm still frightened by the Emergency Broadcast Warning System. They don't seem to do it as often as in the 1980s, and I'm not expecting global thermonuclear confrontations anytime soon (nuclear terrorism or regional nuclear war, maybe, but not all out World War III), but, when you do hear it, it still means something nasty, usually weather-related, is going down.

animegurl1000 - 2013-07-24 Where I grew up, the town's tornado siren sounded like a higher pitched version of the EBS tone. So not only did that scary noise blare out of the TV whenever the weather got really bad, it echoed through the streets as well.
