St Patrick: most misunderstood of saints.

Stars for referencing Voltron.

Not just humor, religious humor! Much like ROUSes, I didn't believe it existed.

1+1+1 = 1

What gets me about the doctrine of the Trinity is that it's quite impossible to get, so why make it a central point of doctrine? The very concept of identity gets tossed out the window; was it an intellectual pissing contest back in the day, to come up with doctrine so unanalogizable as to confound the sharpest of critics?

SolRo - 2013-06-26

Maybe it's Schroeders trinity? They're all god and god is all of them, until you observe them.

Lots of the contradictions in Christianity, among other religions, come from the fact that it absorbed different sects and even totally different religious traditions without being able to fully reconcile them.

It grew and was codified in a culture that believed in demi-gods, who then wrote the stories as such even though the original Christians probably didn't consider Jesus as such. Like how the Greek Christians were big into the virgin birth, while the Judean ones traced the bloodline of Israel through Joseph, meaning Jesus 'fulfills' a blood-line prophecy even though he's a step-child.

You need faith to accept it, because the simple and evidenced answer is that more than one person came up with the story and added to it, not all of it consistently, so it doesn't make sense.

Also, Christianity cribbed a lot of shit from polytheistic religions, so it kinda-sorta adopted the idea of having different entities you could pray to but having them answer to one head dude.

Of course, the head dude is a pantheon as well, so... whee! Religion!

The "other" trinity video (video 123970, still in the hopper as of now) says that it's a problem of fanfiction becoming canon. There had been pre-Christian traditions of addressing the Wisdom of God like it were a person rather than an attribute of God, and likewise with God's Spirit. Eventually the Wisdom of God became associated with Jesus, who was also held to be God in human form, and then you've got the Spirit which had been conflated with Wisdom but can't be in human form, so big mess.

Out of the hopper now; click the "Holy Trinity" tag.
