The New Meat - 2013-06-04

I'd prefer some NEW Target Women episodes, but this will do.

RocketBlender - 2013-06-04

I can't remember the name of the girl that tried to take over, but the show just wasn't the same without Sarah.

The New Meat - 2013-06-04

Someone took over after Haskins? I never saw any non-Haskins episodes, so I figured the series just ended when she retired.

RocketBlender - 2013-06-05

There were 2 or three episodes, and that's it. The new girl murdered Target Women.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2013-06-04

Did her husband lock her up in the kitchen or something? Why has she stopped making these videos?

jreid - 2013-06-04

She quit to make a TV show or something. I miss her.

RocketBlender - 2013-06-04

Her husband was too doofy to do that. I miss her too.

Cena_mark - 2013-06-04

She is so much better than Sarkeesian on so many levels. Sarkeesian just has a judgmental anger throughout her videos. Its like she wants to cut the dicks off all the Lego executives. Haskins on the other hand acknowledges the social norms that have led to these stereotypes and playfully makes fun of them.

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-06-04

Well, now that you mention it, a victim complex does look much nicer without the pretension of academia slathered all over it.

Kid Fenris - 2013-06-04

Sarkeesian isn't angry. That's actually one of my complaints about her videos. I like the ideas, but her presentation is a bit bland.

Target: Women, on the other hand, is pretty great throughout. I wonder how the nerd misogynist hordes would've reacted if Haskins had done an episode about video games.

That guy - 2013-06-04

This. This is what it took for me to agree with Cena Mark- disagreeing with Caminante.

Old_Zircon - 2013-06-04

I'm not saying Haskins' stuff is particularly highbrow but I honestly think it would go over the heads of the sort of people who are shitting themselves over Tropes Vs. Women, which is why I think that despite its flaws it's a needed thing.

I just wish she'd give up altogether on trying to be funny, because every attempt just hurts.

Spaceman Africa - 2013-06-04

Sarkeesian doesn't seem angry, if anything she doesn't have a lot of charisma.

Old_Zircon - 2013-06-05

I've been sick in bed for a few days so I've watched a bunch of stuff, including some of her videos, and I've noticed the earlier, less polished ones seem a lot more conversational and don't suffer nearly as much from being stff or uncharismatic. I think the increase in production values has worked against her in terms of delivery.

Cena_mark - 2013-06-05

The people who'd find Target Women to be over their heads will not be swayed by a young smug dweeb like Sarkeesian talking down to them.
Face it she sucks, she's only not wrong because she's stating the obvious, and you guys only support her because you want to fuck her.

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-06-04

Oh good, I missed being reminded that none of you were funny.

chairsforcheap - 2013-06-04

when you're sliding into first and you feel something burst...

baleen - 2013-06-04

I too missed a feminist telling women what most of them already know: that their own insecurities exist and that advertising agencies take advantage of that.

The largest consumer of facial skin products in the world is actually Korean men, which is weird. I'm sure there's a boring reason why.

takewithfood - 2013-06-04

You make it sound as though these are lectures. This is primarily comedy, and the ads are the material.

That guy - 2013-06-04

Not as funny as when you posted Slow-Mo Simpsons videos for weeks, right comedy genius?

zerdzer - 2013-06-04

so uh, what's the point of this video? is this about how women are expected to be pretty? because guys are held up to strict standards too, although they are different standards.

the stuff she talks about in the video(botox, skin care stuff, jewelery, etc)are all superficial or materialistic products that are advertised to women. it's not like only women have those types of things advertised to them. if you don't like superficial/materialistic products or the culture that pushes them, then that's fine. i don't either. but this is not a gender issue at all, and viewing it as a gender issue solves absolutely nothing.

she's just being a victim. she's not very funny either. i can't imagine she's a very happy person, seeing her gender as being victimized by all sorts of things. it looks harbors resentment towards what she perceives men to be like. 5:30-5:40 is evidence of that, where she lists dumb things that men have done, which also wasn't funny. it's pretty clear that this person is an angry sexist.

asian hick - 2013-06-04

tell me, what standards are guys held up to that even approach those for women and their appearance?

That guy - 2013-06-04

If you can't tell the difference between this and Anita "Eyebrows" Sarkeesian, you make me sad.

Old_Zircon - 2013-06-04

I just trimmed my nose hair for the second time in a month today.

zerdzer - 2013-06-04

eh? there's all kinds of things. you gotta have a masculine personality, outgoing, active, dominant, etc etc. if you're a guy and a virgin past the age of 18, you're a loser. you gotta be fit. the better your job pays, the cooler you are. you gotta have a nice car. these are some formidable social pressures, i've watched guys go through a lot of heartache because of these social pressures. they aren't just superficial/materialistic shit. the list goes on, just as long as the list for women.

the point is, everybody pressured to do things by their society/culture, and as soon as you start splitting hairs saying one gender is pressured more than another, then you've already given in to being sexist. instead of complaining about how your gender, race, or social group is oppressed or disadvantaged, you can fix the problem by working on being secure in your identity and knowing what makes you happy, and focusing on that.

Old_Zircon - 2013-06-04

slow clap

zerdzer - 2013-06-04

well? looking at things this way is way more conducive to understanding and personal growth than just complaining/making victim porn, wouldn't you say?

That guy - 2013-06-04

She's making fun of advertising in a Talk Soup kind of way. That's one of the worst things I can imagine being suspicious of in our society. She doesn't end every episode with a "...AND that's why men are evil!"

I don't know what she'd say if you made her compare men's troubles to women's, and neither do you. Furthermore, I'm not sure it matters as far as being an effective joker. Good hammy jokes are good hammy jokes, and we may have different taste in that, or you may be knee-jerk reacting to her.

zerdzer - 2013-06-04

she isn't like anita, no. she was also more irritating than funny, to me. that's all

The New Meat - 2013-06-04

So you're saying that a joke about how her hair "invaded Iraq" is a coded message about her seething resentment toward all men.

poopy - 2013-06-04

Sarah Haskins

Spaceman Africa - 2013-06-04

Zerdzer is very effective at assumptions.

CJH - 2013-06-04

sorry you turned out this way zerdzer :(

zerdzer - 2013-06-05

i guess it was a bit of an assumption, my mistake

but that doesn't have anything to do with the rest of what i said

i still don't see how this person is funny

pastorofmuppets - 2018-01-02

the male beauty standard is height. there aren't products for it.

That guy - 2013-06-04

She does her best Tobias from 18:29-18:46

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-06-04

She does her best Tobias in that she's a wannabe-entertainer who's destined for a lifetime of failure.

That guy - 2013-06-04

You do your best Tobias in that you wish women reminded you more of men.

theSnake - 2013-06-05

bet she won't think aging naturally is so great in a few years

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-06-05

She already looks like Nicholas Cage, god knows what the ravages of time are going to do to compound that.

memedumpster - 2013-06-05

Stars for the three of you with back brains that have declared "I am socially inferior to this woman, my tribe knows it, and I must lash out to retain dominance." I know people who are like this with kids too.

asian hick - 2013-06-05

"the point is, everybody pressured to do things by their society/culture, and as soon as you start splitting hairs saying one gender is pressured more than another, then you've already given in to being sexist."

Pointing out sexism is sexist? This just gets better and better.

zerdzer - 2013-06-05

well if you actually agree with me there, you'd probably find this video pretty irritating

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-01-02

>>>"the point is, everybody pressured to do things by their society/culture, and as soon as you start splitting hairs saying one gender is pressured more than another, then you've already given in to being sexist."

You know what, I think I agree. BUT VERY CONDITIONALLY.

Maybe women have it worse than men. It's my best guess, but you can't measure the experience of all the people in all of their different situations, and I don't see a value in it. It doesn't matter who is worse off Sexism harms men and women in a different ways, and it's good to talk abot that. but it's all sexism, and it harms everybody. I don't see how we can make progress except from that starting point.
