Its a great example of a very boring 'brute force' produced game.

http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/04/22/x-coms-creator-julian-gollop -on-modern-blockbuster-game-development-overdesigned-uninteractive -paper-thin-illusions/

Gollop gives assassins creed as an example but imo bioshock infinite is another great example

zerdzer - 2013-05-13

it's all true

bongoprophet - 2013-05-13

I'd like to argue that it isn't shit based on just how shit the story is in most big budget games.

It has a minor side story about a character who makes a fortune through modern music stolen through dimensions. One of these songs is CCR's Fortunate Son which is later adopted as a revolutionary song by the workers' uprising.

I liked that bit a lot.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-05-13

"This turd is far superior to the other turds, for behold, it is full of nutritious corn kernels!"

They wasted a lot of potential here. Only two guns at a time? Plasmids that aren't all that different from each other in effect? Handymen that attack you because they're scripted to as opposed to the Big Daddies that you could hunt down yourself and aggro when you wanted to or had a strategy? Feh!

It's very pretty, and there are some interesting story elements there, but trying to mesh that with this ham-fisted shooter setup didn't do the series many favors.

spikestoyiu - 2013-05-13

There are a few similar plasm... uh, vigors, but plenty of them are quite different. "Return To Sender" is nothing like "Devil's Kiss". Etc.

And what's wrong with two guns at a time? It's not like there's an insane variety of guns, anyway. Plus enemies drop new guns constantly.

I still really like the game, even after the honeymoon. Zerdzer here really, really wants to make sure we all know how much he doesn't like it. I'm sure he'll remind us sooner rather than later how great his taste in videogames is.

Scrimmjob - 2013-05-13

Are these games still considered sequals to system shock?

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-05-13

"Spiritual" sequels.

That means they end in "shock." That's about it.

Scrimmjob - 2013-05-13

who do i have to blow to get an HD remake of system shock?

spikestoyiu - 2013-05-13

At least with SS2 you can run it with some mods and it looks pretty fucking sharp.

cognitivedissonance - 2013-05-13

Supposedly there are ownership issues with the franchise. That's the explanation Irvine gives when asked.

cognitivedissonance - 2013-05-13

Irvine, Levine, whatevs.

Scrimmjob - 2013-05-14

that's too bad, I revisited system shock recently, and it hasn't aged well. I think the controls were a little off for the time, and that really hurts it now. Everything else about that game is fucking awesome however.

Adham Nu'man - 2013-05-13

This game was pretty sweet.

zerdzer - 2013-05-13

what made it good though?

Adham Nu'man - 2013-05-13

The story was good, the setting was magnificent and interesting, for a good while I was taking in all the details and figuring out how the mythology of this place worked from sheer environmental clues, which really immersed me into the game's world, much as it occurred when I played Half Life 2 and Dishonored.

It could have been better and more interactive perhaps, as some of the trailers seemed to imply, but it was still a top notch experience and stands just slightly below Half Life 2 in my book. It didn't revolutionize the genre at all, but I thought it was a fine example of a good shooter with an above average story and a magnificently realized environment and mythology.

I guess in my book there are several shades of grey between PERFECT and UTTER SHIT.

zerdzer - 2013-05-13

i see

baleen - 2013-05-13

As a person that will never have the time or impetus to play this game, I am at the mercy of this kind of stuff on poetv. Seeing Bioshock people talk on here is like a National Geographic special to me.

Adham Nu'man - 2013-05-13

It's a shooter, you shoot people, i's fairly on rails but the environments are different and colorful and interesting. The story is involving and interesting and while it's really just a bunch of pseudo-scientific philosophy mumbo jumbo that ultimately means nothing it does manage to keep your attention throughout and to close in a satisfying manner.

It's absolutely nothing like COD unless games where you hold a gun and point it at targets and shoot are by default "like COD" rather than, you know, a fucking FPS.

I'd say that anyone who didn't have impossibly high expectations for this game will be pleased with it.

Adham Nu'man - 2013-05-13

Additional comment: I think most people who really HATE this game are uber fans of the old System Shock who are comparing it to some insane lost standard in their mind, and in that they remind me of the old Fallout fans from No Mutants Allowed who nerd raged against Fallout 3.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2013-05-13

It was fun to place, nice to look at, and while I played I was entertained and was always looking forward to more.

Eroticus E - 2013-05-14

zerdzer has edgy opinions about popular video games. It makes him sophisticated and interesting.

zerdzer - 2013-05-14

i knew your stupid ass would show up

did you even watch the video

Eroticus E - 2013-05-14

LOL. Stupid ass. No, I didn't. ONE STAR

SolRo - 2013-05-13

I haven't played the game, but loving the "It's good but it isn't perfection so it SUUUCKS!!!!" crying

spikestoyiu - 2013-05-13

YEAH WELL KEN LEVINE MADE SYSTEM SHOCK 2 AND THIS ISN'T SYSTEM SHOCK 2 SO IT'S STUPID

FABIO - 2013-05-13

I always thought System Shock 1 was the better game. Once you got past the interface, it just had better pacing, better story, better combat, and more fun upgrades (roller skates and jetpacks vs. being able to swing your wrench overhand!). Instead of basing these kinds of FPS/RPG games around awesome fun upgrades, SS2 started the trend of "virtual incompetence" where you start totally unable to shoot or aim anything and max upgrades meant unlocking a sub par shooter.

It was sad to see Alpha Protocol break that trend and bomb, but I'm hoping the popularity of Dues Ex 3 brings it back.

Anyway, forget about System Shock, XCOM is on a steam sale for now!

spikestoyiu - 2013-05-13

I will revisit SS 1.

Gmork - 2013-05-13

I had a lot more fun on the new deus ex for computer. This was a good game but it is nothing special considering how much money went into it.

Mother_Puncher - 2013-05-13

I guess I might as well review this game.

I didn't play it. But my friend bought it and i watched him play some of it. Me not playing it was cool. It looked pretty and mysterious. He started the game and about halfway to Cloud City, I had to take a shit so I spent some time in the bathroom playing Minecraft on my phone and smoking a cigarette. I came out and realized I never played the first couple so I googled the first 2 games and apparently they arent that related or something but I missed him doing some stuff in game. We got some food. Firehouse subs. I got the Hook and Ladder combo with baked lays. It was pretty good but the girl at the counter always wants our names for the order and they never say our names because it's always Spankton and Jerktron. We went back and he played some more and I fell asleep and it was pretty uncomfortable because his couch has a busted board in the middle seat so its like sleeping in a hammock made of milk crates. I woke up and he met some girl. She was pretty cute. I went home and listened to Sunn O))) - Black One in the car which was ok.

8/10 game. Should have went to Chipotle

zerdzer - 2013-05-13

LOL

MrBuddy - 2013-05-13

ecksudee - 2013-05-13

I love sarcasm so much; favorited, liked, subbed, commented.

I've played this overrated pretentious garbage, and it being good goes about as far as "it's a videogame".
This time the plasmids felt forced (like they had to be there no story no explanation just there (cuz FINK!)) like a vain, desperate attempt to have content where there is none. The guns aren't much better. Nothing feels unique or uniquely customizable like in previous Bioshock games. Enemies don't "drop new guns constantly" it's the same four or five (I forget since nothing in this game is memorable) over and over. And that's about it with the gameplay, guns and unimpressive plasmids. It's a mindless linear modern shooter comparable to CoD. The only thing that holds your attention is the story for the first few hours but even that falls flat.
It's all very shallow and very mediocre, even Bioshock 2 was better.

Spikestoyiu must be having fun following zerdzer around repeating the same mindless thing over and over, in a fruitless attempt to stir someone up. After all, if someone has a dissenting opinion they're clearly trolling and deserve all of my ridicule, how childish. Oh and system shock 1 was far better than 2~

zerdzer - 2013-05-13

uh oh

spikestoyiu - 2013-05-13

You're an insane person. Or Zerdzer's brother.

You make it sound like I'm following dude to the ends up the Earth here, asking him to justify his trolling (which I'm pretty sure I never accused him of, but you seem to have quite a dossier on me, so feel free to correct me). I made fun of him two or three times for his goofy attempts at being THAT DUDE WHO IS NOT IMPRESSED BY A POPULAR AND WELL-REVIEWED VIDEO GAME and for actually saying shit like "i have very good taste in video games".

When I said that enemies drop NEW guns, I didn't mean that every enemy drops a BRAND NEW, NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN gun. If the complaint is that you can only carry two guns at a time, then you just have to wait out a couple of fights and chances are you'll run into the other gun you wanted. And so you can swap and then repeat the process. It's not like Borderlands where you better pick up that rare gun and store it in your backpack because you'll never see it again.

Dissenting opinion is fine. Not liking this game is fine. "this game sux lol system shock i have good taste" is really none of the above. I maintain it is a Pretty Good Game.
